Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling updated (http://www.fourzerotwo.com/2009/01/07/call-of-duty-4-stats-put-into-perspective/) his blog with some stats on the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare juggernaut.

We decided to pull some numbers on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare this past week, which Slothy (one of our coders) so graciously put into a perspective we can all relate to.

As of Jan. 3rd we hit 10,006,606 unique users who have ever played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on Xbox 360 and have connected to Xbox Live at least once after playing.

That number got us curious as to how many of those 10 Million+users finished the F.N.G. mission, or beat Airplane on Veteran (among other things). Well, it turns out:

71.1%, or 7,111,508 people have completed F.N.G.

That’s more than the entire population of Hong Kong (which is 7 Million).

68.8%, or 6,886,509 people have completed Cargo Ship.

This is the same number of adults in the US who were morbidly obese in 2005.

46.5%, or 5,654,643 people have beaten the game on any difficulty.

This is more than the current population of Finland!

2.8%, or 283,632 people have completed Airplane on Veteran difficulty.

The population of Stockton, CA is 280,000.

Wow... it is also bigger than WoW ;)

Just curious... doesn't that mean they sold close to 10M on 360? (give and take a few for second hand).

I'd be curious to know how many of those were rentals.

Also, I believe WoW has 11.5 million current subscribers, actually.

I keep thinking about COD5... I mean... these numbers. If COD5 is a success too.

Pretty crazy info... I wonder where most people stop trying on Veteran... I know I gave up at the ambush at night... That was brutal...

So these are only 360 numbers? Wow, I wonder what their total unique user count is across all platforms?

Airplane on Vet is brutal. I've resigned myself to the idea that I'll never get it.

Of all these numbers, I'm most amazed that nearly 30% of people who loaded CoD4 didn't pass the tutorial. That's awful.

So these are only 360 numbers? Wow, I wonder what their total unique user count is across all platforms? That's a good question. The game has lived in the 'top sellers' list on Steam since its release and Robert said the following about the PS3 version in the same blog post.

Now keep in mind, these are only players on Xbox 360 (who have also connected to Xbox Live at least once). So there are more than this playing Call of Duty 4, we just can’t track them. For PS3, we pulled MP-numbers only, and it looks like theres approximately 4,381,276 unique users playing PSN (not including SP-only players).

COD4 sales are under 7m total units sold WW on 360. So around 3m of those 10m users are second hand or rentals.

There are a lot of people who buy these games for the multiplayer only. I know I have friends who couldn't possibly care less about playing a single player game.

I know I have friends who couldn't possibly care less about playing a single player game.Almost by definition, those of us on this site are more in-tune with that population. But did 30% of your friends with CoD4 skip the single-player entirely?

And if more serious gamers like us (a minority to begin with) don't see those ratios, maybe there's more to it?

Of my RealLife(tm) friends - 50%, actually.
