id Software has released a demo for Quake IV allowing you to try out Raven's sci-fi FPS offering a single-player mission from the beginning of the game where you battle with Rhino Squad to clear a landing zone for the main earth forces, and also 2 multiplayer maps (The Fragging Yard, and The Fragging Yard 1v1).

You can grab the Quake IV demo (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=30114) (326mb) over at WorthPlaying.

This took way too long to come out.

Holy shit, I normally scoff when people say things like, "it looks better in motion." But I'll be damned if Quake IV is not one slick looking game when it's actually running in front of you. Ran really well on my system too, better than DOOM 3 seemed to at least.

Very good move on having MP in the demo as well as SP.

I daresay they could have sold more copies if they shipped the game now with the demo out, rather than a month ago with no demo.

But anyway, gr8 job with the demo.

From Shacknews: Word from Activision is that they plan on making another release next week that will include a working multiplayer component.

Umm yeh, you can't join MP games via browser.

You can _try_ the MP environment as a host and get a feel for teh weapons in the game though. Feels good. Like Q3.

SP seemed good as well.

The color saturation & contrast in the game seems really high. Too high for me. Is there a way to desaturate and decontrast it a bit?

Still glad i downloaded this.

Downloading. Despite my skepticism, I've been looking forward to trying this game myself.

edit: Okay, it runs well and looks great, but a) that demo took about 5 minutes to beat and b) the gameplay felt as bland as it gets, consisting mostly of circle-strafing while blasting away at dimwitted enemies.

Don't think I'll be buying this one.

I downloaded it.

If the full game is anything like the demo, I'm staying way. It's bad. Quite bad really. I can't believe anyone had anything good to say about this game (again, judging by the demo). The opening intro is so "meh". Seeing the characters without helmets was just fucking retarded. The dialogue is bad. The mission structure is so obviously "find the key, open the door" that it's painful. The lame "scared you" tricks have been done so many times before.

The AI is horrible, stand and shoot at you, or charge at you, stop at you, and shoot. It's made even worse by the setting. who the *HELL* sites an orbital defense gun in the bottom of a ravine with it's lines of sight to the horizon set blocked by the hills on either side. Why do I have to go to an aircraft hanger to attack the defense gun when it's OBVIOUSLY right there and I should be able to climb out of the trench (using the ever present crates) and stick some rocks in the rails to disable it. The interior layout of the buildings is not alien at all. It felt like I was in a manmade structure. Quake II's environment felt alien, this one did not.

ID should be embarrassed to have their name attached to this game.

Demo_boy:

I totally agree on the graphics. Just freaking odd how everything's in shadow, then suddenly lit up, then back in shadow, with no obvious change in lighting. It's like a poor poor implementation of HDR lighting or something.

wow, didn't the game come out about a month ago?

the demo is coming out kinda... late. Reminds me of when warcraft 3 released their demo long after the game as well.

I bought the game and really enjoyed it, but seriously it wasn't the best, but I enjoyed it. I thought it was really tight, and the AI was decent, and the graphics were unbelievable.
