MCV (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/32852/Bioshock-can-do-a-Star-Wars-says-2K-boss) talked to 2K president Christoph Hartmann and he indicated that they may try to emulated "Star Wars", possibly seeing 5 sequels to Bioshock.

“Some of the mega-franchises we talk about only lasted ten years because companies took five years to ship a game. Look at Duke Nukem. It’s been a great franchise for 20 years, because it seems like it’s been in development for 20 years.

“For Bioshock, because it’s so story driven, the question obviously arises: how long can you do it without turning into The Matrix? The first Matrix was great, the second one was weird and the third one, you thought: ‘Who [making this] is on crack and who isn’t?’. “But, then again, look at Star Wars. It’s a fight between good and evil, just like Bioshock. If we spin it the right way and get the right twist of innovation, we can make six parts of it, as Star Wars did.

I'm sure people could dig this, but I can't.

I'm sure Ken Levine is thrilled by this comment.

Bioshock had a great story and is a great game, please don't ruin it with more than one sequel!

QFT, but I'll go one extra step and say Bioshock doesn't need a sequel, period.

First person experiences don't get 6 episodes. Ever.

Where three of them were totally crap.

I really don't think Bioshock needs a sequel - the game stands very well on its own. That said, I can see maybe one prequel/sequel . . . but a total of 6 iterations of the franchise? I don't see how that can possibly turn out well. Perhaps I'll be proven wrong, but probably not.

I don't get the hate for sequels. I'll probarbly end up buying all 5 if they are any good. As long as each game has a proper ending, meaning no "to be continued", then I'm all for it. Maybe I am a sheep, but I want my sequels damn it! Look at Resident Evil... Silent Hill (although story isn't connected)... hell, there's been a bunch of Half-Life games (counting expansions) as well, and no-one is complaining.

Ultima got 9 games. So did Might and Magic.

Final Fantasy gets it 13th game.

Getting a sequel != milking.

A prequel could be cool. See it all descend into madness. But other then that I couldnt care less.

You could argue that Bioshock was a sequel to System Shock (1&2).
After one Bioshock pre-quel I think they should re-invent themselves, as they did with before.

What could they do?
Perhaps a nazi theme - Bioshock was first thought of as being a secret Nazi experiment underwater. I guess you need some time-period with technology for all the hacking and turrets. Or just SS3!!

Nah, not SS3. It'd probably get f**ked up like DX2 did.

Are you saying we'll never see Quake 5 and Doom 4? Come on... I bet you'll see sequel 6 of both eventually.

This is A or B
A. the house that Starcraft 2 built: Lets slice and dice each game into 2 or 3 smaller games and sell them individually. Otherwise the only way to get tempo on Bioshock would be to have multiple dev houses a la Treyarch/Infinity Ward. And do you really want a Treyarch Bioshock 3?

B. Just wishful outloud thinking by a producer or exec whom does not really have a connection to the development effort. Hey people like Big Macs! Lets make 6 variations and sell 6 times as many! Sure whatever

Um No.
I just don't see how they can carry on the story past a game that would lead up to New Year's Eve 1959.
I could see them doing those first few hours though.

If the technology existed in that universe though, what would stop someone else from making Rapture 2 later? There's the plot of Bioshock 3 right there. Maybe Bioshock 4 will be about some folks in the future who played Bioshock 1 and were inspired to create their own underwater utopia. And then THAT goes horribly wrong... Then Bioshock 5... some folks played Bioshock 3 and think they can do better... wrong! And Bioshock 6... that's when you bring in the ALIENS, of course.

You can make as many sequels or parallel games as you want, as long as you handle it right and not just do it to "milk" money. If a game sequel is great it doesn't really matter that's a sequel (likte FF13). I like the settings, story and art direction of Bioshock so I don't mind it as long as it's being done right.

And do you really want a Treyarch Bioshock 3?

Are you saying you wouldn't give in and do Omaha Beach one more time if there were Big Daddies emerging from the depths and walking up the bloody sands? :P

I'd be happy to play another Bio Shock game but it would have to be very different, maybe set after Jack has died and you play as one of the little sisters who has grown up. Pahaps for one reason or the other your working on a modern day underwater city project (lets say its to drill for oil) and something causes the remaining citizens of rapture to attack the new city. Your the only one that can resist them because of your previous life in rapture.

But there would need to be something other than the big daddy/little sister dynamic so its not he same game recycled.

What's wrong with these people? Bioshock was good. But come on... comparing it to Star Wars?

And it's bad enough when they start announcing trilogies* before the first game of a franchise hits the shelves, and now they're talking about making 4 more sequels? No thanks.

*except in Bioware's case, as they can do no wrong.

I think you're confusing a sequel of the 80's with a sequel of the late 90's/00's.

Every Mario game took place in a different world with different characters and very little continuity in between. Every Final Fantasy game shares only a little more than a name.

That's entirely different than modern "franchise" milking where the same few characters and scenearios are repeated again and again ad nauseum.

To review, most people are looking forward to another GTA because they always feature new characters, new locations, new scenarios and new gameplay. Many people are NOT looking forward to a new Tomb Raider becuase it's the same characters in the same scenarios doing the same crap.

8 was meh. 9 was unplayable. I absolutely loved 7 and its expansions.
