View Full Version : IGN: Ten Reasons to Wait for the Revolution

From the don't-buy-Xbox-360! department comes this story (http://cube.ign.com/articles/670/670078p1.html) from IGN (http://www.ign.com) listing ten reasons why gamers should skip the Xbox 360 and wait for Nintendo's Revolution instead.

7. Girls and Grandpas Will Play Revolution

Not exactly a riveting headline, we know, but there's some truth to it. Microsoft's new console is designed from the ground up to appeal to hardcore gamers and it shows. There are several major first-person shooters available at the system's launch to prove this point. And that's just fine. But what about the rest of the world? Can you ever look forward to the day when your girlfriend legitimately wants to play a videogame with or against you, or is it destined to remain a reoccurring daydream? It just might happen, if Nintendo has its way. The company has designed Revolution to be an attractive entertainment option for casual gamers -- a.k.a. your mom, your girlfriend and your grandpa. That's because many Revolution games will be pick-up-and-play friendly and offer enhanced multiplayer components. The official teaser video for the console's new controller spotlights casuals as they intuitively enjoy everything from cooking to tennis games. Will it really happen? It's still up in the air, but there's certainly a better chance with Revolution than any other console. And you know you want to rock your girlfriend in a Revolution-exclusive fly-swatting contest.

Articles like that one make me ashamed of being a Nintendo fan.

I think articles like that should make you more ashamed of reading and quoting IGN than being a Nintendo fan.

I'm wondering if you have low self confidence or something....?

I find this kind of funny:

Search for my posts in a prior thread regarding IGN's PS3 favoratism. Bite-sized summary: IGN is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, which also owns everything Fox-related, including Fox Studios, which has made heavy commitments to the Blu-Ray format and a Sony-style DRM-heavy future. PS3 success is integral to Blu-Ray success, so the editorial opinions of all these News Corporation outlets coming to the "fair and balanced" opinion that one should wait for the PS3 before making purchasing decisions is pretty clearly biased by self-interested profit motives.

I wonder what will Mason say now.

Haha, Mason sounds like the kind of guy who buys every David Icke book.

But the article itself seems to be written to make up for the complete lack of Nintendo-related news during the Xbox 360 launch. I haven't heard anything interesting in days, only about the parental lock (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/news.php?aid=13051), which the 360 supposedly also has.

p.s. I love your signature, Player 1!

*sigh* hopefully we wont argue about the "why" his signature says nothing about EvAV. Now onto the news, yea, this sux, IGN has to rethink this whole dont-buy-a-360 shit.

I think this is actually a good point (I havent read the rest I admit).

Many people (including myself) want a family entertainment center to actually appeal to the family. It has been a long time since the Pong home videosystems rocked the family. Now games are too complicated and hard to understand.

The point is kinda lost though because the Xbox360 goes a long way to appeal to non-hardcore gamers too, with the budget titles available for cheap in the martketplace. It would have been true if the Xbox360 was like the old Xbox, but its thankfully not.

It just might happen, if Nintendo has its way. The company has designed Revolution to be an attractive entertainment option for casual gamers -- a.k.a. your mom, your girlfriend and your grandpa.

The question is then, do I, as a hardcore gamer, want to actually /play/ this game for non-gamers against them? Probably not. A family fly swating contest? No thank you, I'd rather play something like a board or card game in that situation. As usual people just don't understand what real girl gamers want, nor do I understand the desire to bring the non-gamers (female or otherwise) into the fold.

I guess you've got to market to somebody, but you're much more likely to nab non-gamers with a Tetris, Mario, Sonic, Mario Kart, Zelda, Final Fantasy, GTA, Sims, or (sport title) level of greatness than a virtual fly swater. The first NDS games were glorified tech demos, and I fear that's exactly where the Revolution is heading... at least for awhile.

The problem is that there are good and logical reasons to wait for the PS3 and the Rev to release before getting a 360. First, there's a solid chance that Microsoft will drop the price of the 360 when the new consoles come out to try to undercut them. Then there's the fact that giving the system a year will get any bugs out of it (I remember the first gen X-box's dvd drives and how crappy they were) while letting the system get a library of games.

It normally takes a year after a console's launch for the games to really get going. The most recent example is the Nintendo DS. It had a couple of solid launch titles, then nothing for about a yeah, and now there are a number of great games for it with more on the way. The PSP is the same way. There were some great launch titles, then there's this massive dead zone its been in, but if you paid attention to e3, there are a great number of games schedueled for release next year.

IGN is basically Xbox 360 fanboys. Of course, they will bash Nintendo when *** is giving them stuff to kiss XBox butt. ;)

bboy
11-23-2005, 05:19 AM
Didn't read the article but I am going to wait and see what comes from Nintendo in about 5 months time. By then the XB360 should have a good bunch of games out and we ought to know if it sucks or not by that time.

Then I can make a reasonably informed choice between the two. Sony can fry in hell IMO.

Borys
11-23-2005, 05:23 AM
The problem is there is no reason to wait for anything. You don't have to buy Xbox today but making that decision a base for some biased, fanboish article is pointless.

IGN: Xbox 360 won't play Zelda.

No shit journos? And Revolution won't play Halo 3, your point was?

Best solution: wait untill all 3 machines are out and then make a decision. I know I'll do it that way, though 360 chances are still slimmer than slim :)

It just seems like absolutely no thought was put into it. Nintendo exclusives should have been a reason instead of Zelda and Smash Bros. being listed exclusively. Of course Borys brings up a good point that listing exclusive games at all is pretty much pointless. Also, its pretty bad that Xbox 360 is expensive and Revolution is going to be cheap were two seperate points as well.

Kyle Jones
11-23-2005, 08:01 AM
Same Games Prettier Graphics is an okay reasoning, but kind of a blanket one. Sure, there isn't as much innovation in the 360 as could be in the Revolution, but a lot of times a gamer - even myself - just wants a new iteration of an older game with a few new features and prettier graphics.

Xbox360: why settle for a Gizmo, when you can have a Gizmondo!!!!

Inevitable Winter's:
Top Ten reasons to punt the 360 and buy a Gizmondo!

360! PS3! Revolution! While they're all nice systems, none of them are ready to take the next step! Why settle for these gizmos when you can have a GizMONDO?! The future of gaming and not getting lost is nigh! Tired of walking around, wondering if there's anyone near to play your portable in Ad-Hoc? Wait no more! The beauty that is the Gizmondo is upon us! However, you need 10 good reasons to abandon other systems and adopt this one! If you haven't heard of Gizmondo, perhaps you'll remember it's prototype...Game.Com! The first handheld to bring the gaming world together has become more than just games, it's become a gizmo, but it's more than just a gizmo, it's a GIZMODNO!

#10. Raw P-O-W-E-R
Gizmondo is all about power on the go! Boasting 400Mhz and a 128-bit 3D co-processor, it's the most powerful thing you can put into your hands! No harddrives, no complicated triple-cores, No need for a High Def TV!!!! The Gizmondo has more power than it knows what to do with! Built in 240 x 320 TFT screen! 3D! No unneccessary bells and whistles have been added to the graphics. What if you're blind? How can you enjoy the power if it's all in the graphics? No realistic HDR lighting, No bumpmapping. The power has been conserved for where it's needed, and not wasted on silly things like touch screens and HiDef graphics. Conserved RAW POWER in the Gizmondo!

#9. EA produces titles for it!
Now we all know the great products Electronic Arts produces. It comes to no surprise that EA retains quality ethics as well. EA IS NOT the type of company that will release titles on every stinkin platform it can get it's hands on, no matter how meager the profits. EA selectively picks it's gaming platforms, based on the platform's abilities to present EA's vision of the title at hand the way it was intended. EA would NEVER re-hash a title to a lesser platform, thus degrading the quality of the product. That said, EA has created Big-Hitters like SSX3 for the Gizmondo! If EA likes the Gizmondo, you should too!

#8. Locate yourself without an atlas!
Ever go for a walk with your head staring at a handheld and look up only to realize you walked beyond the boundaries of your known locale? Fear not wayward gamer! Gizmondo will take you home! No more carrying around an expensive GPS locator for the gamer on the go! The Gizmondo has a GPS system built RIGHT IN! That's right! No other system on the market has the GPS functionality. XBox360? You'll know your friends are online, but you'll still have to ask for directions (LAME!) No more stopping to sheepishly ask for directions! No more U-turns or K-turns! Hungry? Gizmondo will tell you where the nearest McDonald's is!! Always know where you're heading, and where you are with the Gizmondo!

#7. Music, Movies, Messeging and more!
Tired of messaging, gaming, watching movies, listening to music, taking pictures and locating friends all with different devices? Be weary no longer! The Gizmondo does all of these things! The Gizmondo has built in camera, media player, mp3 player, messenger services! Best yet, with use of the Gizmondo GPS functionality you can see where other Gizmondo users are! Why chat with users on Live for the 360, when you can actually GO TO the user's location and talk to them in PERSON! That's right, no more headsets! The Gizmondo offers the best in the business

#6. It's made by Tiger Telematics!
http://www.classicgaming.com/castlevania/features/tiger/tiger2.jpghttp://www.classicgaming.com/castlevania/features/tiger/back2.jpg
Remember this?!?!

That's right, Tiger Electronics! Tiger Electronics has produced more handheld games than anyone in the industry! Hundreds of titles, dating back prior to 1982! (Click for catalog (http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Tiger/Cat1.htm)) Tiger has grown up with the heart of the current gaming commnuity. It's been there from the start, and has nutured us. Tiger knows what gamers want. Tiger is the soft-spoken nanny that cooed us as Mommy Nintendo, Daddy Sony, and Uncle Sega and Cousin Microsoft, spent days making money and not paying attention to us. While Tiger Telematics was the one to make the Gizmondo it shares the name "TIGER" with Tiger Electronics!!!!! With a name like TIGER you can't go wrong! Go Gizmondo!

#5. Simple Stupid!
What's the best thing about the Gizmondo?? It's SIMPLE! No confusing Analog joystick, or nub!! No tiny styluses to loose! No dashboard button you can hit accidentally, ruining gameplay! No wires! w00t! Tiger knows best, they know what gamers need. No over-complicated things like iPod connectivity. The Gizmondo is exactly what it needs to be, and you should put it where it needs to be, in your HANDS!!

#4. Idolize easy names to pronounce!
How many times has a great product been released, you start idolizing a person with a difficult name to pronounce? Satoru Iwata, Huh? Sat-or-are-you a-water? Nobuyuki Idei, What? Nob-you-yucky Idea? Shigeru Miyamato, come again? She-grr-you My-a-tomato? Tiger knows how frustrating this can be. So tiger only employs people with easy names to pronounce. Take for example Michael Carrender (pronounced Car-Render). It rolls off the toungue as if it was english. Now, you can enjoy your games, and shout to the world your love for your idols.
http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_25/art04_25/0425pe_76carrender.jpg
Michael Carrender

#3-#1. The Gizmondo is better than this list!!!
Gizmondo is so great, and efficient, it doesn't need a whole 10 reasons to own one vs. a 360!! It can topple the 360 in only 8 reasons! That's shorter than the Top 10 reasons to wait for the PS3, and the Top 10 reasons to wait for the Revolution! Take that Nintendo! Eat this Sony! Ya baby!

As usual people just don't understand what real girl gamers want, nor do I understand the desire to bring the non-gamers (female or otherwise) into the fold.
I was listening to CNN on XM radio...or on of the news stations. And they were talking about some confrence that was trying to get more women into game development. When speculating on what this could do for games they came up with some of the stupidest stuff I've ever heard.

Basically, the guy the interviewed said that there is a lot of violence in video games, but no sex, and women entering the developing world would bring more sex to videogames as well as games based around communication.

Maybe they'll make a game where you cry and eat choclate, get emotional, and have trouble making decisions.

Well, it addresses one thing that already has had me waiting on a Revolution. Gameplay.

I don't care about the best graphics. I just want to sit down with a good game and enjoy it.

Pretty graphics does not mean good gameplay. Not even close.

But then again, I was already waiting on a Revolution to begin with.

I don't know why people are always saying Nintendo has better gameplay in gameplay vs graphics arguments. Also, people who bitch about sequels annoy the shit out of me.

Nintendo games are fun, but they are basically just like the millions of flash games all over the internet, with snazzier graphics. When I play a Nintendo game it seems to me like some stupid menial task you complete over and over again to get a higher score. The games are fun for a little bit, but they wear out really fast. There are exceptions of course, but the ones that are exceptions are the ones that don't have *new* *innovative* gameplay.

When it comes to gameplay I prefer something like Splinter Cell or Half-Life or GTA.

As for sequels, I say bring them on. New franchises are great, but if they stopped making Splinter Cell games I would be extremely pissed off. They better keep cranking out those sequels because personally, I fucking love playing them. I don't care if it is the same gameplay with a slightly different story. The game was fun the first time, it is fun the second time, it will be fun the third time. I replay these games anyways while waiting for new versions of them to come out. Currently I am playing Max Payne 2 for the third time. I am playing Chronicles of Riddick for the second time. I am playing Half-Life 2 for the second time. I replay all of my old games over and over again. Give them updated graphics, a new story line, and put them on store shelves and I will buy them immediately.

Finally, I hate it how people bitch about Madden not being innovative in reviews and stuff. IT IS A FUCKING FOOTBALL GAME. I want to buy it, play football with my friends with updated rosters and some updated graphics, I don't care if they add extra features or not.

I hate articles like these. Damn near everything PS3 and Revolution is speculation at this point. The only thing i've seen confirmed is the Rev controller will be differently.

I really don't want to wait an unspecified amount of time to play on one of these systems. If I want one of those system, I will get it when it comes out. I should be able to save enough money between now and then to get a new system if I deem it attractive enough.
