View Full Version : Ten Reasons to wait for the PS3

An article (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/668/668446p1.html) by IGN has the top ten reasons to wait for a PS3.
The Dual-Screen support also adds some interesting 3D potential. Layering images is a great way to fake depth. But if Killzone in full 3D isn't your cup of tea, maybe panoramic F1 racing will be? The option is certainly there. If the next Ace Combat doesn't feature dual screen-in cockpit support, we know it at least could have if it wanted to. Boo-yah, 360. Where your 720p now? While being able to play with six of your buddies offline in addition to playing with a single system will only be appealing for a small number of genres, it can be especially important for sports games in particular. Being able to populate an NBA or NHL team entirely with human players is something that isn't possible on any system outside of the PlayStation line, and the PS3 will keep with this trend.
Why should it be a reason to WAIT? Is it illegal to own both???

Then again there are 20 reasons not to wait.
To be honest if that are the 10 reasons... PS3 is teh f*ck3d.

I'm going to wait 'till 2007 before moving in on the consoles. Let the feeding frenzy calm down and see what I can afford and have the most fun with. Right now I'm trying to go for a 360 and a Revolution, Live! Arcade and Nintendo's downloadable library are looking very good to me.

Yup...can't wait for the PS3....the dual screen support isn't going to happen though...I don't care what they say. You will not see to 1080i or 1080p feeds going...at least not looking like what a PS3 game should look.
After the 360 pre-orders, it surprises me that it hits reason number 7...then again sony is much more trust worthy than MS.....

Yes, cause as soon as I get home tomorrow with my 360, 2-3 games, and an extra controller or two, I'll NEVER spend another dollar on it for a year.
It's not about length of time b/w the two system releases. It's about affording multiple systems (and in my case, a PC too) at the same time once they're all out. This last generation, I nabbed a PS2 and GC. The GC didn't cost much up front, and I only bought a handfull of games for it. The PS2 was more than enough to wipe my coffers every month.
I'm liking what I see in the 360, but I'm waiting till at least late summer next year, so that I can make a more informed decision on which new system to invest in. Meanwhile, there's plenty of fun to be had on my PS2 (go hit the used section and pick up cheap titles I never got to play) and my PC.
Not to mention, once the Revolution and PS3 is out, we'll have the mandatory price war shortly after.

Complete agreement with Vanenh and Savok.
I'm not saying "no" to the PS3, mind you, but so far, much like the PS1 and 2, there's nothing really making me want to buy it, least of all this lame-nut, kiss-ass list.

None of the reasons on the list will make me wait to buy the PS3 instead of the 360. Like it was said before, if you start saving now, you could easily afford it by the time it comes to the U.S., even after getting yourself a 360. :D But I gotta have my next gen gaming now, and the 360 with Live is gonna get me my fix. I just hope they didn't screw themselves with the regular dvd media for the games...

Just to add to your point, I was thinking the other day how strange it is that Sony is sort of the Microsoft of the console world.
No prob.
I don't like speculating like that because depending on the "console war" Microsoft could be the Microsoft of the console world. I say "console war" because it really reminds me of a Monty Python skit about idiots racing. At the end of the obstacle course they are given guns and told to shoot themselves and they fire around for awhile till they're dead. Anyone else remember that one?

Heh. IGN editors are so interchangeable. I've read pieces of PC editors reviews Xbox game and Ps2 editors play PC games. The editors play all sort of games and although they might have platform preferences, they're not fanatics of a specific platform. The piece is just to create 'controversy' for gamers to talk about and idle fanboys to argue.

OK, I'm not a fanboy either way, own an Xbox and PS2 and I think the 360 looks fantastic (though shortages combined with lack of any games I really want at launch equals no 360 for now). But here, straight from the article:
PS3 has the Metal Gear potential, Warhawk, Tekken, I-8, Gran Turismo, Killzone, and a dozen other high profile games that may hit day one to put a smiling face to the splendid PlayStation name.
I can see Warhawk hitting on launch, probably Tekken too. Gran Turismo? Hah! No way. Metal Gear? Doubt it. Killzone probably, but I would not be suprised at a month or two delay.. is Killzone a first party title? If so, it has a better chance of hitting on launch as they will push that shit out.
Most of these reasons are pure crap, reason #6; seven controller wireless support. Neat, now how many games on launch are going to support it? And how many people are going to have seven people, and seven controllers to do it? Probably not a lot.
My reason for waiting, besides a lackluster (in my opinion) launch and the shortages? I just bought my Xbox a year ago, I have yet to really hit that point with it that I want to put down five hundred bucks on a new system let alone need to. Plus, I really just do not have that kind of cash to throw away right now. Maybe (or whenever) Playstation 3 hits, I will pick one up. And when that happens I will have a clearer view of what the PS3 is going to offer, what games it will actually launch with, and maybe, just maybe, a slight price drop.
I will probably go with the 360, more then that, I will most likely go with the 360. Sonys attitude towards online gaming, as well as the sour taste they have been running around leaving in peoples mouths of late is keeping me at arms length. Damn I wish the core system did not exist and the premium was $300, and MS had given a little more thought to production.. I'd be playing one now.

Where your 720p now?Are they joking? Who would want a panoramic view with an enormous split down the center? If it supported 3, well alright. How about that it just supports HDMI out of the box, which is a very good thing.
As thegameguru mentioned rumor has it that the dual HDMI has been dropped. Along with half a dozen other things including Wi-fi in order to make a Christmas launch.

Unless you're buying more 360s (why?) in that time you don't have a point.
Actually, I do. You just seemed to have missed it. So let's have story time:
I am not made of money, and thus can only really support one console system along with my PC addiction. So despite good games still coming out for my PS2, or the hordes of used titles I never got to try, I'm going to buy a 360 today.
Now in order to do that, I need to save money. From where? Well I stop spending on PS2 games. Ok, fair enough. All in the name of progress. So a year goes by, and all my gaming money is going to 360 and I'm loving it. But now the PS3 is coming out. (Keep in mind this is a hypothetical story) And lo' it rocks the house, and I want one bad. Where will I get the money to buy one? That's right, by neglecting my shiny new 360 for a month or two.
So now I have two systems, neither of which I can afford to buy all the games I really want to play, just some.
OR
Now I love my PS3 because (just pretend with me) it kicks the everlasting crap outta my 360. And thus leaving me with a VERY expensive paperweight and games I never play.
****Back to reality****
I think the 360 is looking good. I actually want one. But my PC and PS2 are still providing lots of fun/entertainment for me. So I'm going to wait until the Revolution and PS3 are out, so I can make a better decision on where I want my money to go. Again, I think the 360's rocking pretty hard, but a lot of you are getting caught up in the media-fed hype of "OMFG I HAVE TO HAVE THIS IT'S THE XMAS GIFT OF THE YEAR!!!!"
Chill out, think for a sec. If the PS3 or Revolution comes out next year and you REALLY want one/both, can you afford to support the 360 too? If you can, then great. I'm sure the 360 will do well. But if you're like me and on a budget, then just wait.
If it's any consolation: By the time the PS3 and Revolution are out, there might be some 360's actually in-stock at your local game store =P

On the multiple screen issue:
I doubt we'll see titles that implement it. I'd like to be wrong here, honestly, I would.
Please don't go batshit with the "but you'd need 3 massive HDTVs" bullshit, cause you're being retarded.
Lets assume 720p, for now, as the resolution. You can get three computer LCDs that display that output for dirt cheap, sub $200 each, probably even less by the time this(a ps3 game that supports multi-display) is even an option. Just set them up on your desk in the panorama, and game away. All of you console fanboys who order a vga adapter as soon as it is available for your consoles know what I'm talking about.
The article is obviously working off one of the most tire ASSumptions in console fandom, the assumption that you can only own one console, the assumption that you have to choose between one console or the other. Well, people, I'm here to tell you that you don't.

So basically we all should wait til the PS3 launches and try to get one of those. Remembering how Sony's last two launches went with the PS2 and PSP, just add 6 to 9 months onto the launch date for a realistic shot at getting one... mid to late 2007 or early 2008 at best. They'll harder to find than a 360 for sure.

Well, I never bought an XBox, and do not plan to buy a 360. They offer me next to nothing that I cannot get elsewhere.
I think for me there's no reason to give me the 10 reasons to wait for the PS3, as far off as it is I'm just not considering it as "competition" yet. No matter what they say the systems will be comparable technologically, and although the PS3 will likely launch with a strong line-up of exclusive titles, the 360 will likely have more by the time it's out. There's always something better in the distant future, that's not going to stop me from buying something now, what they need to give me is one reason to buy the 360 (translation, a game I really want to play).

Me too. That game blew harder than any other Sony-published game ever. Nice presentation, too bad they seemed to spend all of the game's budget on cinematics, a snazzy menu screen and tons of shitty media hype. Certainly not the only PS2 game created by Sony Europe that failed to live up to the hype...

Search for my posts in a prior thread regarding IGN's PS3 favoratism. Bite-sized summary: IGN is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, which also owns everything Fox-related, including Fox Studios, which has made heavy commitments to the Blu-Ray format and a Sony-style DRM-heavy future. PS3 success is integral to Blu-Ray success, so the editorial opinions of all these News Corporation outlets coming to the "fair and balanced" opinion that one should wait for the PS3 before making purchasing decisions is pretty clearly biased by self-interested profit motives.
IGN is hardly a disinterested voice here, so I'd really hope EvAv would stop posting their anti-360 editorials as news when there's a clear factor of corporate cronyism informing those editorial opinions.

You know whats the funny part for the ones that buy the console now for that price of $1600 and for the normal price tag (for now) $400 that is not gonna be long until MS drop prices of 360...yes i know maybe they don't have "competence" in some next generation kind of way but the consoles atleast the only one i can said is PS2 are keep selling games, and lets not forget that they have some really looking foward games to come for the PS2, examples Kingdom Hearts 2, Final Fantasy XXII e.c.t If i'm correct another GTA is in the works correct if i'm wrong plz.. and of course Star Craft Ghost that is coming for XBox and PS2 (if they for God sake finish that game... )

Well, the top reason not to wait, is that I could die in 1 year like anybody else. I personally have tasted next gen and had to get my 360. If in a year (because we are not seeing it in America until then...at least) I decide I want a PS3, I think i may have made the $450-$600 needed to buy one. If I hadn't, then i have much more serious problems than deciding to get a PS3.
(But I probably won't because I dislike the way my PSP malfunctioned 3 times)

Raise the standard at which you will buy things, with more platforms you have access to more AAA stuff. You can rent games for a reason.

Damn, there's shitty reporting and then there's shitty reporting.
If I had even read this as the top reasons to get a PS3 I would have told them to piss off.

I prefer my xbox for certain games, plain and simple, i play the games I prefer to play on xbox on xbox, and the ones I prefer to play on PC on PC, and get other consoles like the gamecube for quirky games.

In a couple days you could die, so why are you wasting it playing videogames? In a week you could get cancer, so why are you posting on the internet? In a few hours SWAT might break down your door and arrest you, so why not have hot sodomy with your St. Bernard?
And why even stop there? In a few days you might get crushed by a falling airplane, you'd better go rob a bank for the sheer thrill of it! Or a meteor might hit Earth while we weren't watching, so people probably won't mind being run over by your car.
The possibilities are endless...
