I noticed this news release (http://ashes.lalista.org/press/announcement.html) over at RPGDot (http://www.rpgdot.com) and found that this is an interesting and ambitious project. If they can pull it off, it will be really cool.

Ashes : Two Worlds Collide is a single player cRPG built on the philosophy of old classics, yet featuring more modern 3d graphics.

Ashes is strongly inspired by three milestones of RPG history: Ultima VII, Drakkhen and Demon's Winter: we're trying to replicate the exploration, atmosphere and compelling plots of such classics while adding some brand new ingredients to form our own unique game.

Ashes is *NOT* a hack-and-slash rpg and neither is it arcade oriented like games such as zelda. Ashes tries to be a complete rpg experience through the following features...
Click the link to get full details of what the features are. They are hoping for Late 2006/early 2007 release. I don't remember Drakkhen nor Demons Winter, but Ultima VII was pretty good. Again, if they can pull this off, the game should be pretty interesting.

Well shiat.. I hope those two can make that game happen, it's a damn ambitious game, espically when it's being done by 2 people.

For being an independent game it don't look too bad. It does have that Ultima look to it.

If I'm not mistaken, Drakkhen was a SNES RPG. One of, if not the very first, RPG available for the system.

And Ultima VII was better than pretty good. It was amazing. A good number of the features that games now are calling "new" (games like oblivion) were working perfectly in Ultima VII a full 15 years ago.

Anyone else remember the game just like Ultima VII but was based on Mars and used guns and such? Can't remember the name of it.

I'm 90 percent sure you mean Worlds of Ultima: Martian Dreams. I never got to play that one.

Actually I think Drakkhen was out first for the Apple IIe (maybe C64 and Atari ST) before the SNES back in the 80's.

Many of the texture seen in those shots are sprites taken directly from Ultima 7/7.5.

I think if they don't concentrate on graphics, these looking as dated as Quake 2 only with Cell Shading and realistic blurry textures they might actually be able something decent.

Ultima VII wasn't just good, it was the best game ever fucking created. Don't even try to argue with me or I'll castrate you and masticate your balls.
