Texas became the first state to file a lawsuit over Sony's nightmarish copy-protection scheme:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The state sued Sony BMG Music Entertainment on Monday under its new anti-spyware law, saying anti-piracy technology the company slipped into music CDs leaves huge security holes on consumers' computers.

Somehow it seems that anti-spyware laws are coming to fruition against DRM-type software. Information wants to be free!

Texas did something I agree with? Now that's news! Too bad I live in Houston.

Wow great! Texas steps up and Protects their consumers.

Of course then they say this:

The Texas spyware law allows the state to recover damages of up to $100,000 in damages for each violation.

Abbott said there were thousands of violations, and that any money would go to the state.

Oh so a big FUCK U to the cash paying customer once again. That Linux based entertainment PC is starting to look pretty good to me.

Poor Sony. We should all just let them be. They've had enough negative press in the last month or so.

How can there be enough if one deserves it?

Maybe they should start doing things that get them GOOD press?

Gotcha! I thought it odd that you take one attitude here and a 180 turn on the same situation here...

Well for one thing, this has nothing to do with videogames, correct? This whole rootkit shit just pops up here so everyone can have a jab at them. It's bad, real bad of Sony, yes, but does it have anything to do with GAMES?

Gaming News With Attitude. Remember that.

It certainly speaks to Sony's direction re: protecting their assets Kelegacy. The Rootkit crap, combined with the info about perhaps only allowing a game registered to one console is a bit iffy.

The rootkit can be used to cheat in online games, so yes it does effect gaming.

The initial news story was actually presented from a gaming perspective. Sony's DRM software is being used to enable cheaters to hide their cheats from detection in games such as World of Warcraft.

Kelegacy, this place posts boxoffice earnings and weekly comic-book reviews. Nothing about this place is strictly about gaming. It's about what gamers are interested in.

And regardless, a potentially enormous lawsuit against the biggest company in gaming is very much gaming news, regardless of the specifics of that suit.

Yeah, if Sony went into bankruptcy would that be worthy of posting despite not being gaming news strictly speaking? The bottom line is that just about any major news relating to Sony, MS, or Nintendo is going to qualify as news because it's likely to have some effect on their gaming divisions. I mean, yeah, plenty of people will use any negative news as an opportunity to slam the company's console and any positive news will draw the fanboys in, but that doesn't make it not news worthy.
