TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp. (6758.T), the maker of Playstation game consoles, may lose its iron grip on the market for game machines as rival Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) launches a new model just in time for the holiday season.

I think we can all agree that Round Two will be a lot closer than Round One. Both consoles will have something for everyone. Frankly, unless you're a stockholder in either company, how does any of this matter?!

Why do I have a funny feeling that once the Sony and MS behemoths bash each other to pieces with ever increasing development costs and ever increasing "sameness" of games that the true winners will be Nintendo and the PC?

In all honesty, something about this next-gen just doesn't feel right with small developers being forced out of the market and consumers paying $60 for games and far more expensive accessories. If anything, the gaming industry is setting itself up for another one of its spectacular falls.

I think the article is very true. All it says is that sony will lose it's "iron grip". Not that it's going bankrupt, not that they are taking third place. Simply put: they will be facing actual competition in the next round.

There's one point in the article that interested me - the assertion that a slip from Sony's ~70% market share would spell big trouble for them financially. We're all familiar with the analysis that says that PS2-related income is supporting multiple unprofitable divisions of Sony, but this is the first time I've seen the implication that a loss of some of that income would be *disproportionately* bad for the company.

The financial side of all this has interesting ramifications beyond raw "my console is more popular than yours" sales numbers; for example, it will likely play heavily into how many of the PS3's highly touted but implausible features actually make it to the final product (and at what price). Dual HD outputs, multiple network ports, etc. may all make a hasty exit if Sony finds it necessary to trim manufacturing costs on the PS3 design.

Okay to be perectly honest with you, what Sony did was just fucked up, I mean didn't they even stop to think about what they are doing? Not hard enough I believe. What they thought would be a message made out of them to be an example.

You know whats the saddest thing in the article they didn't even mention Nintendo...don't get me wrong i love some of the games of Nintendo.

Anyway like i said it i will repeat again i'm not even thinking in buying a 360 for GOD sake thats a freaking computer ! (mostly) the only major diference is that you don't have to install most of the games.
