America has narrowly won the crown in the World Cyber Games (http://www.worldcybergames.com). Americans won gold in Halo 2 and Counter Strike, and took home silver in Warcraft III at the tournament last weekend in Singapore. There's a summary article about it on the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4456288.stm) .
Counterstrike: USA
Warcraft 3: China
Starcraft: South Korea
FIFA 2005: Germany
Need for Speed Underground: Brazil
Halo 2: USA
Warhammer 40K: South Korea
DoA: Ultimate: Japan
Freestyle: Korea
It's nice to see some unbiased mainstream media coverage of a videgame tournanement. I'm deeply shocked, just SHOCKED, that South Korea won gold in Starcraft.

... and Korea won in Dawn of War 1.3 as well.
All Korea needs to do now is create an army of remote controlled battle machines and give them a dawn of war or starcraft command interface and they can dominate the world.

Well, I am not really suprised, a European winning at Soccer, Japanese winning at fighting, Americans winning at games that involve shooting everything, and Asian countries winning in RTS, yeah... really normal. But, Brazil, I didn't even know they played modern games there.

You have to be joking right? Brazil winning a racing game makes total sense too. All in all its funny how strengths in each country plays out in the virtual world.
I would imagine if they had a hockey game there, we Canadians would win that one.

The Ogres are incredible. I watched a video of one of the Ogres play vs some of the other top 10 Halo 2 players in the world and watched him go 42-0 on team slayer. When he and his twin brother are playing simultaneously it's insanity. They even have their own twin language about the game so no one else can understand them.

So which part of America took the crowd. Would that be North or South America? Was it Canada? Or Mexico, or even the United States???
Sorry, HUGE pet peeve of mine. You live in the United States of America, on the Continent of North America, which is part of the America's.
K, off my soap box now. ;)

Other than Counter-Strike, all of these wins make sense, inlcuding China. They're all regionalized based upon the stereotypes we have.
God, Blizzard must own the world. Do that many people really play in China and Korea? Simply amazing. Would you say they might have larger market penetration than Windows?...think about that one for a moment.

Blizzard still makes money from it, right?

Hard to say. They may have sold the rights for a straight fee, may work off a percentage or may rent out the rights on a periodic basis.

We have America in our name. We're the only major world power in either of the American continents to have America in our country's name. Hence, people call us Americans, and people call us America, because saying "United States" takes too long. (/sarcasm on the last half)
America is internationally known as the USA. The United Nations commonly refers to the United States as America. It has not been confusing or ambiguous for years, except to people who want to complain about it.

Beat me to it.
It's pretty common slang everywhere, not just here.

Why the hell would you use Dead or Alive for your fighter in a tournament? Not that it would've made a difference, since Japan would have won fighters anyways no matter what the title, but DoA is hardly a competition-level game.

I think the US doing so well in the RTS ladders is the most impressive note here. Otherwise, these are the nations I would suspect to win. The defeat of US players in an FPS or a Korean team in a Starcraft-clone is a long way off, or will be a major upset.
