Team Xbox (http://www.teamxbox.com) have released details of a terse statement (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/9796/Next-Generation-Square-Enix-Titles/) from the people at Square Enix regarding next generation versions of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
Tokyo, Japan (November 16, 2005) Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Microsoft Corporation, and Nintendo Co., Ltd. all have expressed plans to release next-generation game consoles between the years 2005 and 2006.
In this regard, speculation about the availability of FINAL FANTASY series and DRAGON QUEST series games on these systems has been reported on various media. However, we have made no concrete decision on our strategic direction of this issue.
We will continue to disclose any important information regarding business operations immediately after we make any relevant decision.
Sheesh - excuse the media for being excited!

Well if you released some solid fucking info, then there'd be no need for media outlets to guess, would there? Feed the hungry fanboys already. When developers think they are too good to share real info with their fans, this happens. (http://www.bungie.net/Games/Halo2/)

Doesn't really seem that terse to me. Simply sounds like they're setting the record straight and letting people know that if they make such decisions they'll let us know shortly. I don't really see what's wrong with this.

Props to SE for not being even more pissed off about this. I would have been way more peeved if it was a company I owned. Imagine hearing the media reporting something like "All Square-Enix games to be ported to N-Gage and Atari Lynx!" with no evidence to support it.

I wondered what their response would be. Despite others opinions on exclusives I know several people for whom SE is a PS3 dealbreaker. The tight-lipped nature of Square's response does not surprise me at'all.

I wonder, do they prefer Yen, Dollars, or negotiable bearer bonds?

Now, I do believe that the bid starts now...
Do I hear 1 million ? Yes sir the gentleman at the back... 1 million.... Do I hear 1.5 million ? and on and on ad infinitum until the news comes out.
Clear message to all parties involved won't you say ?

DQ8 and FF12.
DQ8 = 9.0 @ Gamespot.
People's impression on FF12 demo are great.

Since when? All I've heard is more "different but not in the good way, Squeenix has really blown in this time" talk. I've had my experience with it, and honestly, approaching it open-mindedly, I'm not impressed. The story better be Damn good, or this might break my faith in the Once-Could-Do-No-Wrong Square.

I think sometimes the media outlets try and influence publishers with the rumors. If the perceived notion that people want FFVII on their <insert system here>, they think the publishers might be persuaded. It's wishful thinking. It almost never works.
Instead, we get games like Crystal Chronicles on the 'cube, which is a good game but completely worthless (think about that one)...and of course we all know that any other game would have sold more (FFVII remake, any FF remake, any new FF for cube or xbox).
At least we got Tactics Advance.

Hardly. I've seen plenty of impressions from both sides. Of course it's easier to spot the haters.
And how are you people defending baseless rumors? How are you not tired of many website and blogs just making shit up to get attention? It's sad, and now has made me weary of any news that isn't a press release. I'd say a company like Square-Enix has the right to say "shut up" to a press that has no idea what it's talking about.

Tycho of PA launched out with that, and of course what he utters a million fans follow. While PA has pointed me to some great games over the years, most recently Guitar Hero, I'm not nearly as hung up on little details as them.

I've played through the FFXII demo - it takes about 25 mins and shocases the combat and nothing else. You can't even open character menus.
What's worth noting is that the combat is DIFFERENT. As much as people go on about the FF games and the countless sequels (which sometimes hit, sometimes miss) Square do make some effort to change the core staples of RPG gameplay. The combat in FFXII is one such example - the comments about it playing like an offline MMORPG are pretty much dead on the money.
Remember FF8 - Square did away with automatically earning money from battle and also did away with automatically earning new spells as you level up.
FFX - you could develop your character by using a fairly elaborate skills tree - heck, they even had two of them built into the game to offer different challenges.
Sure, a lot of the stuff stays the same but Square actually are bold enough to take a pretty fundamental facet of their highest profile licence and take a risk with it by changing it.
I think that effort should be rewarded with more than just superficial dismissal - regardless of whether the effort is regarded a success or not.

I'm curious who these people are? I don't know anyone that cared for it and I thought it was pretty awful. The cinema scenes and storyline look like they'll be great but that's about it. I didn't like the combat at all. I agree that it felt a lot like an MMO but far clunkier because of the lack of a keyboard (so no hot keys.)

I'm all for developing new combat systems, but why simulate an MMORPG-style combat? Combat is probably the only aspect of current MMORPG's that I can't stand. In fact, it sounds so boring in my opinion, that I'd rather have a familiar turn-based system (which I simply couldn't stand anymore after FF7).
This only proves to me that SE has lost their touch.

PAL never sees DQ and don't make me laugh.
Square lost whatever touch they had with FF8 when they started making games that required strategy guides to get any sort of sidequest done.

I'm going to look like an absolute idiot and ask "what is an MMORPG style combat system?"
I was never into RPGs very much since the 16-bit days, and never really played an MMORPG.... I'm just curious about this one complaint...

It's a realtime battle system with heavy use of skills/abilities/spells, each one of them has a cooldown (even if it's only the universal one so you can't instantly chain 8 things), you then pound on each other until one side dies, then you get downtime waiting for your health and mana to return.
That's the core of it anyway, outside that are ways to exploit the AI like pulling (which like Tribes and the sking, is now a vital part of the system) and group based tactics which usually involve having a main tank who keeps the enemy (mobs) all nice and aggroed on him, a healer on said tank to get keep him breathing, damage dealers because tanks usually don't nuke everything in sight too well and buffers/debuffers who aid allies and cripple foes by increasing/decreasing attack strength and so on.
As you can likely tell from that, it's best each avatar have its own player so they can follow the flow of battle.

Ok, I get what you mean now.
Thanks for clearing that up.
