Spotted this at HardOCP (http://www.cooltechzone.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=1997)

Basically there seems to be issues with the tracking ability of laser mice from Logitech and Razer. I haven't noticed this with my MX1000 or G5, but both companies are acknowledging that there is an issue. Razer has offered firmware to give more power to the laser while Logitech is telling you to get a laser optimized mouse pad.

Anyone else having issues? I'm using the smooth side of a Func pad with mine, no problems that I noticed.

I know if I move the G5 REALLY fast on my func pad it loses tracking...otherwise...I haven't seen an issue.

well, laser mice don't seem to like the smooth surfaces of gamer pads like the cyber snipa or whatever - but that's just the nature of the laser. It's true of normal optical mice too in that certain surfaces/pads just are better for that type of mouse.

I'm using a Microsoft Optical USB on a table and it works just fine. Very smooth. In fact we replaced all the Dell mice at work with them. They're beasts....we love them.

Is there something in the Logitech's mice technology that's different?

Optical mice use a camera, laser mice use a laser. Lasers are more accurate(really only for gaming), I haven't noticed these tracking problems though.

I've had zero troubles with my MX-1000. I use it both on an old style foam/cloth mouse pad (to prevent grime building up on the teflon pads) and on my desktop surface (black formica stuff). I've been gaming with it for a year or so and will never go back. So even if there are problems acknowledged with them, I've not noticed them.

I've got an MX-1000, and am using a Xtrac Ripper pad (really, really big cloth pad with a good pattern for tracking on it) and haven't run into any problems.

I've also got an MX-1000 being used on a regular foam/cloth pad, and I've never had any problems with it. It's my favorite mouse ever, personally.

I have no issues because I know never to buy Logitech.

It isn't the smooth surfaces that have a problem, fyi, it is certain textured surfaces, which are probably sending the laser everywhere but back into the mouse.

I've got a g7 and it works like butter on a func f30.r

...and you get the retard award for ignoring the fact that the issue isn't vendor-specific, it is technology-specific.

The fact of the matter is you might need a different mousepad to go along with your fancy new laser mouse.

Well big fucking deal, I needed a new mousepad when I went to an optical mouse from a mechanical mouse too. I still did it.

Indeed. And I'm not sure why you'd want to ignore Logitech, unless you prefer second rate.

First company with a laser mouse, first company with an actually usable(in my opinion) wireless mouse in the MX700. Not to mention the MX1000 is by far the best mouse available for general use.

I agree with most of what you said, except for needing a new mousepad for an optical mouse. One of the cool things about optical mice is that they work just about anywhere. I'm thinking of upgrading to laser, and am a little put off to find that it might not work as great as I expected, but I figure I can make things work.

I had a white everglade mouse pad for my ball mouse. My first optical mouse did not work on it at all, similar to trying to use it on a glass surface. So while uncommon it is possible :).

I'm using the Razer Diamondback Special Edition Plasma mouse, and other than having to turn the sensitivity way down to get a comfortable feel, I've had no problems with it at all.

I've bought enough Logitech products over the years to know that anything new they get involved with is awful and should be avoided.

I guess you're right. The exceptions being just about every input device they've released in the last 5 years.

Actually yes, my computer lost my wireless keyboard the other day, refused to start no matter what I did. Ended up having to a friend's old corded keyboad, plugging it in to let the computer actually start then fixing the wireless one with it.

What in the name of all that is holy are you talking about? You are trolling, and I should not be feeding. Logitech is not the be-all end-all of the mousing world, yet to call their entire product line 'awful' is just a load of whale sperm... I suppose you prefer the 'superior' Kensington brick mouse for it's rock golem friendly ergonomics, or the far superior Microsoft ass-mouse ...

Headsets, joysticks, keyboards, game pads...

I have a Microsoft Optical mouse, it works, little thing has been through hell as well.
