Try this on for size - watch not 12, not 36, but 24 hours of video footage of some loon playing twelve classic LucasArts adventure games in a row, including Loom!
Just kidding. The loon is no loon, he's a maniac... And the video is of course condensed and the download is a very manageable 16mb, courtesy of Mojo Art (http://mojoart.mixnmojo.com/) and Gamershell (http://gamershell.com/).

Grim Fandango is not one of the twelve. Apparently there's just not enough hours in a day. Poor excuse if you ask me!

All those games were done in the SCUMM engine, Grim was not. I suspect that is the reason.

I see. That explains it.

I thought the video was going to be a recording of the game being played (using fraps or something)
Not a time-lapse video of people sitting in a room playing the game.

...time for an intervention me thinks.

At least they are from a time when Lucasarts made some amazing games.

I got a kick out of this video, mainly from the appropriate music and the funny responses he gave at the end of some (thumbs downing Loom was pretty helarious). Either way, I love SCUMM.

I have Loom, but never played it. Is it worth a shot?

You mean the latest masterpiece of fantasy storytelling from Lucasfilm's Brian Moriarty?
Why it's an extraordinary adventure with an interface of magic...
stunning, high-resolution, 3D landscapes... sophisticated score and musical effects.
Not to mention the detailed animation and special effects, elegant point 'n' click control of characters, objects, and magic spells.
Beat the rush! Go out and buy Loom today!

I have Loom, and its one of my old favorites. I think its a nice creative game, with a fun premise with the whole musical thing. Pretty short, but if you can find it cheap its worth playing as a history lesson. I seem to recall it runs pretty well in ScummVM if you do manage to snag a copy. Oh - and get a copy with the voice acting, it was pretty good from what I remember.

Fortunately you can get any PC version of Loom and upgrade it. Strangely The Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=655) (of all people) have a fully legal patch-only version of it for download: a patch to upgrade the floppy versions graphics to that of the CD version (3 meg), and the audio-pack (50MB)
Yeah, I wouldn't normally mention that site here, but Lucas-Arts seems to make sure they don't have any *cough* 'abandoned' stuff of theirs. Unfortunately my version of Loom in ScummVM is the Amiga one, so I'm stuck with the less-flashy gfx+subtitles. But on the plus side it does make me feel *very* retro. ;)
I thought it was a good game and story. Definitely a bit 'out there.' But the music/weaving metaphors felt silly to me sometimes (like calling someone "Bobbin Threadbare" is not going to cause a snigger every time.)

My favorites were the Maniac Mansion series and Full Throttle. Arguably the best adventure games ever made.
