The 360 version rumours remain rumours as this morning 1up has the scoop that Metal Gear Solid Touch has been confirmed for iPhone and iPod Touch. It will deliver familiar characters with most likely unique gameplay due to the screen-only interface of the platform.

...we now have the official confirmation of the new game: Metal Gear Solid Touch is the title and it's coming to the iPhone. So much for the green teaser hinting at a Metal Gear Solid 4 port for the Xbox 360, which many people assumed to be the case (Kojima's ploy to get people talking certainly worked).

According to what little information is available so far, the game is based on the characters and story from Metal Gear Solid 4 and players will naturally be able to control everything through the touch screen. According to Konami, 8 levels will be available in the game with more stages to be added later. MGS fans will also be pleased to hear that points earned by playing the game can be used to unlock images and wallpapers from the Metal Gear Solid series.

More here (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3171920) with information on Silent Hill and Frogger games for the...handheld?

I guess they are taking this iPod as a games platform pretty seriously. Kojima you old dog!

Oh yeah. I can see the news now: "Metal Gear Touch outsells MGS4 3:1"

Well.... no, it's just lame.

While I can appreciate the disappointment in what the actual announcement was, I am excited about the prospect of the iPhone/itouch maturing as a gaming platform. I know some people claim "jack of all trades, master of none" when it comes to multifunctional devices, but I am basically down to just carrying my iPhone for communicating, music, portable gaming, etc. This news sweetens the deal.

Got Hero of Sparta last night. It is definitely a step in the right direction. But for the love of jezus, please patch the Katamari port.

Phone games will ultimately still be phone games, for the time being. It's almost too risky...or pointless of a platform to develop for. While most people have a phone, most also don't have phones powerful enough to handle games of a decent quality. I, for one, don't.

While no-button game design works on the DS...it benefits from not only having a stylus, but from buttons as well. As it would turn out, not all games work well with a touch-only design.
I could be wrong, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say major games like this MGS "port" will be few and far between when developers can spend their energy on actual handheld platforms that are in enough homes to guarantee at least a marginal sell-through.

This is going to be the exception, not the rule.

I don't quite understand the hubbub with cell phone games. It could be because I've never had a cell phone that supports anything other than Snake and Tetris, or it could be because I have taste.

Just kidding.

But in all honesty, I don't have any interest in cell phone gaming although anything MGS sparks a note of want.

It depends on the context, right? When I'm standing in line for something, or sitting in a waiting room, I don't typically lug a PSP or DS with me. If I can whittle away time with a game of better quality than snake or Tetris on something I already carry, all the better. Serious gaming is done at home for the most part, anyway.

I wish it was MGS4 for the 360.

One can hope it will eventually, I guess.

There are probably more iPhones out in the wild than their are PS3s. Makes a lot of sense to me.

I still think this is a bad idea unless it's Ac!d. Any word on the gameplay or looks yet other than it's going to use touch controls?

BeeCakes?!

BTW, this iPhone game is a horrible, horrible idea. There's a reason why Squeenix never ported over that FF7-based cell phone game, even though by all accounts it was pretty damn awesome. A serious mobile game is not what an average iPhone user wants, especially when we're talking about a 'serious' franchise like Metal Gear.

Psst... you'd get more mileage if you use brackets instead of greater/less than's!

But 100% agree with you, and the 'solid' username newbie! Hardy har, might I cornily add!

haha, yeah I tried to edit my post but I was SOL, I'll have to get out of my simple HTML mode I suppose.

I just read on Kotaku that this is just going to be some kind of little shooting game, kinda like Duck Hunt or something. I can officially retract my "want" statement.
