View Full Version : PSP-4000 For Next Year, PSP2 Not Far Behind
So you may remember a little news story in which it was suggested that Sony currently had no plans to a fully fledged follow-up to the PSP. Well, it seems like that may not be entirely true with news that a PSP-4000 will hit shelves next year and that developers are already working on PSP2 content. From Eurogamer. (www.eurogamer.net)
Sony plans to refresh the PlayStation Portable product line with a PSP-4000 model in late 2009 and launch a true successor - a PSP2, if you like - later.
Publishing sources, speaking to Eurogamer, were unable to provide any further detail on next year's update, which will presumably follow this year's PSP-3000 in taking an iterative approach. The PSP-3000 launched this October and followed a 2000-series model, the first Slim & Lite, in September 2007.
Even fewer details were available on the PSP successor, but we're told that developers are already working on games.
More information here. (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=343940)
Definitely rumour but from a very reputable site. No doubt they will have to include some sort of unique interface to compete with the DS.

The PSP's problem is NOT the hardware, which is selling respectably. The problem is the SOFTWARE sales, which are not very good.

I just want dual analog sticks. I'd preorder it the moment the sku became available.
DUAL ANALOG STICKS. I was there on launch day for my pre-ordered PSP, I will be there again the next lunch day if they include DUAL ANALOG STICKS.

I think Sony would be better off trying to break away from the DS not by a unique interface, but rather by removing restrictions from the current model. I would love to see a PSP that gets rid of physical media, tosses a 64 gig Flash Drive into the thing, and sells all of its games as digital downloads rather than UMDs or whatever. They could sell the games cheaper then the DS, keep the higher production values, and cut out the Used Game sales completely.
A lot of 'Special Edition' DVDs these days offer a digital copy of the movie you buy. Sony could push this as a standard feature of all DVDs, and I'm sure that a lot more companies will jump on board than they did with UMDs. Likewise they could offer Movies and TV shows for download.

Actually,
I can agree with this, but think the should integrate it thru the Ps3.
Although, dual analogs would be nice.
How about they just make a PS2 w/o media drive as a portable.
add a good screen and they are done. Instant library that can be bought on PSN and no new dev costs.

didn't we just have a news article about PSP2 not being in development?

I seriously think the PSP would be brilliant with the simple addition of a second analog stick - I had little complaint about any other aspect of mine while I owned it. The graphics looked great, the screen was large enough and bright enough.
I've got a DS and enjoy the hell out of it - but I'm fine with Nintendo keeping the unique interface - I want a handheld that offers the same level of control as my console. The idea of playing a multiplayer FPS game on the road or in my office is awesome.

How much do you want to bet that it will have motion controls?

Where is the edit button :( What features does the PSP-4000 have?

Yup. It's a rumour mill thing that's started out of nowhere.

PSP-4000?? I'm glad I stayed away from the 3000 now after hearing of the screen issues.
So what does the 4000 bring?

Depending on what the 4000 model offers, I'll most likely skip it like I did with the PSP-3000. I'm still good with the PSP Slim.

Thus far I have had zero reasons to upgrade my PSP-1000. I doubt the 4000 will change that.

Hmm I wonder...maybe the reason we havent seen the camera and GPS addon in the states yet is because they may be including that in the 4000's? Be an interesting way to combat the DSi which may be coming ashore next year.

For that Sony would need a dead on copy-protection. It would be great to get the games via digital download, but another round of the hacker/firmware race that happend on the current PSP would fuck them up.
Pirates would be all over the system.
The other way would be to make the platform totally open. Let the homebrew guys run wild with it.

The primary thrust of the hardware revisions has been to win minor battles against the cfw scene. Is it possible or sony to make the psp-4k pandora proof?
