View Full Version : Weekend Gamer - What are you playing?

The weekend is here - and finally, the last Saturday that I have to work on for two months! I am finally feeling better as well, where I will be trying to get a few computer games in. Some CoH, maybe some WoW (been a few months since I have played that), and the waiting game for Gothic 2 Gold to get delievered to my door. What will you be playing this weekend? With the holiday shopping season arriving, are the games you want going to be available? What games do you want? (Yes, BAPenguin, we know your Oblivion has been pushed back to what must seem an oblivion to you, but it is scheduled for next year).

SMT: Nocturne still. Will be picking up Dragon Quest 8 today for the wife and I (mostly the wife, I can feel her bogarting the game from the future, it is a great disturbance in the force) to play. Hopefully we will be getting the money together very soon to rebuild our computers and pick up CoV. I also want to pick up Battlefront 2 when I get my new rig built.

Guitar Hero. I just picked it up for my brother for Xmas (but of course I had to make sure everything works properly ;)). It makes me really reconsider whether or not I need a 360 now.

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga has me hooked like a bass in a Mark Davis videogame.
Aside from that, FEAR, final battle in Advance Wars, and maybe I'll pick up Mariokart, but prbly not until next week.

I'm hoping to (finally) finish F.E.A.R, and slog my way through the rest of GUN. If anyone was thinking of getting GUN - DON'T GET THE PC VERSION. On my P4 3GHz with 1GB of RAM and a GeForce 6800Ultra card the game runs horribly. Frame rate hitches, LOD switching issues, the ground terrain disappearing, etc... I've heard the console versions perform much better.

Then, it's on to The Movies. I'm only up to the 1930s, but I'm really intriqued by the game.

I don't get to play anything that I WANT to play. Being European I'm sitting here at least a week longer waiting for Dragon Quest VIII and Legend of Heroes, on their way from Canada. Also waiting for Sly 3, that was ordered by my girlfriend for my birthday and scheduled for EU release weeks ago, but wasn't released until this week. And of course Play.com don't ship out in advance so I actually GET it the release date.

What CapnBob said. Mario Kart DS. I'm also entertaining family, but we'll mostly be fighting over the DS to play Mario Kart.

Oh, and there's a little college football game this weekend. Maybe you've heard of it. It 's just the greatest rivalry in college football. OSU vs. Michigan.

I envy everyone who gets to play Guitar Heroes. Alas, my wife has forbade me from dropping the necessary cash on it :P

Instead I'll be spending most of my gaming time playing:

The Movies, which is disturbingly addictive, even moreso than Civ 4. I even ran out and picked up the Premium pack after playing my friend's copy last weekend. Sigh.

Dragon Quest 8. I worked an overnight shift last night and that meant I had a good 5-6 hours of nothing to do except play DQ8. I love it, although it is rather punishing. Not SMT:Nocturne punishing, but still not the cakewalk most JRPG's have been of late.

I have to say that I enjoyed the FFXII demo. It really reminds me of Vagrant Story. Is the same director of VS doing FFXII? Regardless, I'm looking forward to FFXII when it comes out. Sure, it's different, but it's not THAT different... at least not in my opinion. And you know that if they'd stuck with the normal ATB system it would get slammed with staying too much like the other FF's, so bleh.

I'll also spend some time actually getting into A Feast For Crows, assuming I have any time left over after my gaming and work :P

I just got Fable: TLC yesterday, though to be honest my son's the one who's been playing while I watch. So far, it looks fairly entertaining. I'm wavering on pulling the trigger on the latest GoGamer deal - Civ 4 for $36 is hard to pass by. I have too many games to play at the moment, but the problem is that there really isn't anything I'm really looking forward to until Oblivion comes out. And Neverwinter Nights 2, but that goes without saying.

And has anyone played X3? Any opinions on it? I checked game rankings and the ranks for it are just so sporadic.

The Premium edition has 20 extra costumes that you unlock during the course of the game. It also has a whole CD worth of soundtrack music and some extra little things like a mini-hint book and such. The costumes were the main reason I got it.

Oh, and the fact that it's on DVD.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes again, cringing at the strange changes. I have no problem with more elaborate body language, but all the Matrix-y motion effects, stuff like Snake jumping off a missile... and the Otacon ending is a mockery of what it was. Ahem.

Other than that, Shadow of the Colossus, still! My attention wandered when I got to the centipede-like one in the "pail deep in the forest" - about halfway through. That was a weekend or two ago and I haven't yet gotten back to it. So, I'll dish up some crushing defeat tonight or tomorrow, and hopefully have the game finished by Sunday.

And also... MC Chris! Lucky bastard.

SMT: Nocturne still. Will be picking up Dragon Quest 8 today

Same here. I tried out the first 5 minutes of DQ 8 last night, and felt guilty for leaving Nocturne. So I'll be playing the hell out of it this weekend, hoping to get to DQ8 sometime in the future. I can't jump into DQ8 and leave other RPGs sitting there mid-game; Dragon Quest is 100 hours long...I'd never return if I abandoned other RPGs now.

Mario Kart DS mostly. I love the wi-fi, but I wish my dorm had a better wireless connection. Time to get the dongle.

Aside from that, I'm praying that I can get more Xenosaga Episode I in. The game hasn't gripped me yet, but I'm holding on. Or maybe I'll start Silent Hill 2. Or Ico.

I'm picking up a lot of older games that I missed 'cause I was a late PS2 adopter, and nothing terribly exciting is coming out until Twilight Princess. It's nice to play catch up.

Yeah, im still sitting on my copy of Xenosaga I too. I picked it up because it was supposed to be such a kickass RPG, but I played about 4 hours, mostly a tutorial type level, and just never got sucked in. Been meaning to revisit it to see if it lives up to the hype or not, but just have had the time or draw to do so. Bright side is, I only pay 29.99 CDN for it, so even if I dont play it, it can join other games ( like Kings Field ) I bought cheap but never actually played.

Heh. Funny you should mention that. My list as it stands: Max Payne, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, Silent Hill 4, P.N. 03, and Chrono Cross (five bucks new at Blockbuster - I was proud). Of course I had to buy Killer 7 when it first came out... Had I waited a couple weeks, I could have saved $20. Oh well.

I still need to beat Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Kingdom Hearts (probably never going to happen), Beyond Good & Evil, Ratchet and Clank, Chrono Trigger, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Resident Evil 4, and Final Fantasy VI, which I've been playing on and off for ten years.

Xenosaga breakdown:
Battlesystem and on the whole gameplay = Suck
Story = OMFG!

I suffered through the gameplay for the awesome story and cutscenes. I actually played it in my dorm room, and people who don't normally game would come in to say something, stop talking, and sit down to watch with me. Then demand I fill them in on the story later.

Fortunately I preordered Xenosaga II and got the bonus DVD that has all the cut scenes in I without the tedious dungeons inbetween.

I enjoyed Xenosaga 1. Xenosaga 2 is supposed to be better but I just haven't gotten into it. The story is still crazy but hasn't started to gel into any sense of coherency. The other problem is that it runs REALLY SLOW. Every battle I've done so far takes forever because you have to wait for each ally and enemy to 'spawn' on the battle screen individually and they don't do it very fast. Sigh.

I'll get back to it in the new year once I finish DQ8. DQ8 is the only RPG I'll be playing till I beat it.

Everything I've read on Xenosaga 2 says the following
1. Battlesystem was supposed to be made more fun, but instead became much worse (which is why it's being replaced in the NDS version)
2. There is an attempt in the story to simplify it, which loses the giant scope of the original, which is what made the original so fun.

Yeah, Xenosaga really needs to rethink the battle system. It somehow combined "generic" and "confusing", which is kind of a trick. I enjoyed Ep1, but Ep2 didn't improve enough or pick up the story very well, so I lost interest.

For anybody still checking this thread, I went to the MC Chris concert, and he was an ass. Don't buy his CDs, don't go to his concerts. Me and my girlfriend approached him before the concert just wanting to meet him and buy some of his stuff, and he didn't have the time for us. His opener (SNM NM NM) was incredibly hospitable, but Chris was an ass. We left during his first song.

Don't bother. He's the biggest fake of all. Pathetic. He's too good for us. Spread the word.

Is there a way to stop the Sands of Time so I can catch up on about 100 games?

Now that Dragon Quest 8 is here, I can't even look at SMT: Nocturne without thinking about its antithesis...DQ8 has vibrant colors, very japanese artwork and characters; Nocturne is drab, depressing, demonic. That's part of the game's charm, but the game's difficulty has pissed me off to no end, and I'm one of those guys that forgets to save his game every so often.

I think I might postpone Nocturne and jump into Dragon Quest 8 tonight. A 100 hour RPG...if I could cut out work, sleep, and eating, I think I could handle being a gamer much better. Maybe I should just hang up the controller.

I've got 2-3 hours under my belt with Dragon Warrior. I couldn't resist. And I'm loving it. Encounters are pretty high, but I don't mind right now. But we'll see about that during hour 75.

Trying to finish up a stack of PC games I'm half into, so I can switch over to console during the week.

finished dragonshard
finished republic commando
finished quake4
spent lots of time in a mmorpg stress test

working on single player campaign of battlefront II. It is HARD, lol. The game cheats so awful bad. Anybody on the enemy team can capture a point or blow up a target, yet on my team I'm the only one who can do any of it.

painkeep + expansion
DoW + expansion
X3

Finish that stuff off (except x3, can probably play that forever) and then I can switch to the pile of console and DS stuff I have laying there.

Where can you get those? Strangely enough, I don't indulge in gamer swag but this is one time I might think about splurging. I own nothing in my gaming collection besides games and consoles. No figurines, cutouts, posters, tins, anything. But again, this looks sweet and I might track one down. I'd use it for other games, too, if it was comfortable enough.

Some people on another board were talking about their Slime Controllers. I haven't seem them around.

But yeah, if you toss one of those around, you're liable to impale someone.

Click on the picture and it'll take you to the EBGames site. I'm not sure if there are other places online selling them, but that's where I found it.

I'd get it in a heartbeat but it's conspicuous enough that my wife would kill me. She's already ticked at me for getting DQ8 and she doesn't know about The Movies yet :)

What are her interests? Does she spend copious amounts of cash on things she likes? You're a big gamer with great tastes in games...she cant fault you for your habit. Of course, with a habit comes mucho money spending, so therein lies the rub. But you could always tell her that she should be thankful that your habit is videogames, not drugs. Or maybe not...because sometimes the two are so similar, it's scary.

Oh, I've already run through all the excuses. Usually I'd be able to get away with this with a wink and a smile, but what with my having to take out a loan to cover the credit card bills for all my game buying over the past year, well, suffice it to say that future game purchases are banned. I can sneak in a couple games here and there, but I'm not tempting fate with a giant blue controller that smiles back at us.

Why can't new games cost $20? If you could be guaranteed to find a game, like, oh, Rez or Ico a couple years down the road like you can with DVD's and such, it would be one thing. When they ship 8 to the local store, well, for someone like me I can't help but run out and buy it new... I'm still ticked that Guitar Heroes is rather pricey up here. I'm sure that I'll be out of luck finding one in a few months when my game buying moratorium is lifted :P

And sadly, no, she doesn't have any extravagant habits like my gaming. I can't really call her to the carpet for spending money on daycare or food for the house... sigh...

Thankfully I just game and that's about it, but it's not a cheap habit!

Check that link out for better pics, straight from the Hori website. The controller looks neat, but I wonder how it really feels.

The only thing that would make it better would be if it were wireless...

All of my console controllers are now wireless (well, for the current gen) and I can't stand using corded ones now.

It's funny, the guys who CAN afford games pirate them, and the people who cannot, spend their hard earned cash on them. Or at least that's how it seems sometimes. I'm lucky because I have a friend who is a game store owner, so prices usually aren't bad for me. Especially used stuff.

I feel your pain, friend. But at least you dig RPGS, which last tons of hours. Those are the best way to get your money's worth. Especially Dragon Quest VIII, which is simply immense.

Just start on a day to day basis of slipping a small amount of crack into her food. Before you know it, she will be an addict, and you can look down your nose at her! :D

All kidding aside, im in a pretty sweet relationship when it comes to gaming. She knows im a geek, and that ill buy any shit that comes out at launch, but for the most part, she is cool with it. The only bitchfest I get is when I buy something and dont really use it ( Like my PSP, fuck you sony! ). As it stands now, im using *our* money on tuesday to buy my 360, which is about as cool as it gets. That said, I just have to shut my fucking mouth when she spends money on wierd shit like candle parties and the like.

All told, fairly good trade in my opinion :)

Thankfully my wife HAS been pretty cool, albeit grumpy about the gaming. She has more or less come to accept it and doesn't bug me about the gaming but she just doesn't like how much cash I spend on it.

Ah well. Now, if I could somehow parlay all of my gaming skillz into some kind of actual revenue stream, well, then we'd be set and she'd love games.

It does scare me when she starts joining in on conversations about Xbox 360 shortages and such. I know she doesn't care about these things but I guess my very presence causes her to learn obscure industry facts by osmosis.

The funny thing is that our good friends are almost the same but in reverse. In that relationship, SHE is the obsessive gamer and he's the one who has to make sure they don't blow the rent every month. He does actually play the games though, unlike my wife. Ah well.

At least I do like RPG's. Unfortunately I like about every single other genre (realistic sports aside) so that doesn't help... I need a 12 step program! My game rental thingy with Getgames is helping so that I don't blow even more obscene amounts of money on the games I just want to check out... I still refuse to rent RPG's though. Gotta buy them.

Yeah, this is pretty much the system I have worked out with mine. As long as both of us can get something once a month ( a game or 2 for me, handbags and scarves for her) that isn't bank-breakingly expensive we're both content. She's known about my geekery since day one and has made peace with it. She even bought me my Xbox and DS as presents and is putting half towards my 360 :D

My wife DID get me an N64 and The Ocarina of Time for my wedding gift, way back in the day (tells you how long we've been married) so I guess I can't really complain.

Rental is really the way to go. I'm spending $60 a month on two services, for a total of seven games at a time, and just buying the important stuff. It's saving me a lot of money.
