Couldn't find any thread about Defense Grid: Awakening, so I thought I would make one.

Has anybody tried it yet? Would really like some impressions from you guys, cause I can't justify giving out 20 $, when I can't try a demo.

So, is it any good?

It looks interesting, but I also have absolutely no clue what it may be about; or if it's any good.

My reccomendation: Pick up Hinterland or World of Goo until reviews start coming in. Space Rangers 2 if you have Stardock's Impulse and haven't played it yet.

Already have World of Goo. Absolutely amazing little game. Also I-fluid, which I think it ALOT of fun, but the small bugs tend to ruin the fun for me. Especially when the ball falls right through a spoon or what object to have to jump on.

Haven't tried Hinterland, don't know what it's about. Gonna check it out.

Hinterland is an addictive little weird combo of poor combat and poor city building that works out into something amazingly worthwhile. I'm playing it right now actually.

Heh, as you can see, I actually wrote in that thread, asking the same thing. But as it didn't show up in the recent threads I decided to make a thread of myself;)

Oh, I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE :D
Yeah, news doesnt show up in the recent threads... probably because it would be overloaded and be ultimately useless.

I need to stay away from this game. I waste more time on tower defense games than anything. I just get sucked in to them.

But if this one is good it looks like there goes another part of my free time.

I picked this up and played the first 6 or 7 maps last night. It's pretty cool, worth the $20 if you're a big TD fan.

The only new mechanic I've seen (new to me anyway) is that the invading baddies are trying to steal energy cores from your base. If you kill a baddie that is carrying a core somewhere along the path back out of your base, he drops it there and it sloooowly floats back to its origin. While floating back, any empty-handed baddies can snatch it, thus shortening their time on the map because they didn't have to run all the way to the central core deposit to pick on up.

So you can get into a situation where you just barely kill some baddies before they exit but now they've dropped cores just a short distance into the map and the newly arriving baddies can quickly snatch them and turn around to leave, giving you very little time to kill them.

Sounds really cool:D It's a definite buy after reading some impressions.

Check it. Review: http://news.bigdownload.com/2008/12/11/review-defense-grid-the-awakening/
Defense Grid: The Awakening is one of those games that quickly gets under your skin with its "easy to learn, difficult to master" style. Soon, you'll be lying up awake a nights trying to figure out how best to use your resources to build an unbeatable defense.

I only tried this game a little bit when it came out, but yesterday tried it more... and now I just want to play more. I've honestly never really played a tower defense game prior to this one, other than screwing around with a flash game that I didn't really care for... but this one is quite entertaining.

Fallout 3 taught me there's probably a shot you can get to cure that.

I just finished this game last night. I thoroughly enjoyed it and have started going back through trying to get gold medals on each stage. A few new game modes also unlocked but I haven't tried them yet.

And for those that didn't know, it's $15 until Jan. 2nd on Steam.

On the topic of Medals, I kind of wish they did it a little different. For you to get your first medal, you just need one core, and whatever score (basically, just finish the level) but for silver and gold, you need all your cores and a specific score. I think I'd be happier with a tiered core count... like bronze would stay the same, then silver would be 18+ cores and a score, then gold would be all cores and a score.

That being said, I'm thoroughly enjoying the game. Gone through 8 levels so far and I dig the increasing difficulty and additional towers / upgrades each level brings. The music is my only real complaint so far... its the same track on every level and gets pretty repetitive.

If I can finish it up within the next few days, I'll have to write up a review on it.

thanks to EvAv i'm hooked on this game. i love tower defense games, one of the best things about Starcraft/Warcraft 3 were the UMS tower def maps.

it is so fucking addictive, and insanely hard. just when you think you have a decent defense it throws a new mob at you that totally negates what you've built. sadly the towers i love cost a fortune Temporal + Inferno + Meteor = awesomeness. those floating tank boss mobs that move a thousand miles per hour..UGH i can't stand them they are the bane of my setups ;\

im still working through the Story mode, hopefully I'll get to the regular gameplay for the Leaderboard to take effect soon, since I've come up with a few setups on some maps that just completely pwn whatever waves are thrown at me.

I'm really enjoying it. It's a lot of fun just to watch what you've built chew up baddies. I've spent a lot of time doing stages over just so I can get through them without losing a single core.

Thanks to Evav, I have a new addiction.

Heheh, yeah - the rumblers are hard. I always build laser towers to chew those guys up. (Lasers apply a damage over time burn that hurts them even though they aren't in range very long).

Very cool for you to drop by Echo:)

Have tried the demo and would love the full game, but can't afford it right now. Moving in to my new appartement tomorrow (first time moving away from the parents).

Heres to hoping I win:D

any word on the patch Echo? someone over on the official DG:A forum said you guys are working on a content patch to add a map editor, multiplayer, etc? Cause yea...that would be pwnage. Both of those would make this game EPIC.
