GamesIndustry is reporting (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/sony-to-axe-8000-jobs) that Sony will be cutting five percent of its workforce. Sony has also informed (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/playstation-division-under-review-as-part-of-corporate-changes) GI that the PlayStation division is under review.

Sony has revealed that it will cut 5 per cent of its workforce - around 8000 jobs - by April 2010 as part of a drive to cut costs as the economic downturn bites in Japan.

The company will also close two of its overseas manufacturing sites, including one at the Dax Technology Center in France, with the aim of reducing its plant operations by 10 per cent over the next 15 months - specifically in LCD and mobile phone technology areas.

Additionally the company will cut manufacturing investment by around 30 per cent in a bid to save JPY 100 billion (USD 1.1 billion) by March 2010.

Definitely news, but not doom and gloom. Virtually EVERYONE (not Hormel, makers of Spam...or peanut butter manufacturers) is cutting back in a very, very difficult economic time.

Yeah, and its happening over the span of almost a year and a half too. So, not super terrible, but I'm thinking that companies are just using the economy as a "good" excuse to trim some fat.

^What they said, not bad considering all the begging and pleading coming from companies like GM nowadays looking for free handouts after epic fails.

But still I really miss the days were Sony had an unshakable sky's-the-limit reputation in the industry, during their Crash Bandicoot/PaRappa the Rapper/Final Fantasy 7 heyday.

Just saw a news report about how SPAM is making a huge comeback. Raw, fried, whatever, it's delicious.

Also, that's a lot of jobs lost . . . sure Sony is a lot bigger than that, but still. Those people need to find something else.

Sony already laid off a good chunk off their NBA sports team in the San Diego studio last week.

When a company this large starts making cuts, it makes you wonder....

And 5% of 180,000 people is a lot of people....
