View Full Version : Money to spare what to buy?

It's my birthday and a couple of friends decided I should be playing more games. That gives me the opportunity to have 2 new games for free.

I wanted opinions on what should I get.

I like FPS's, when they are well made and like me some single player (TF2 + L4D have my multiplayer FPS front covered).

I used to like strategy games, but I can't enjoy one in a SERIOUS time. At least not for more than a couple of matches.

I used to LOVE RPGs, played Baldur's Gate II more than is good for one's sanity, but find it hard to like other RPGs. I was thinking of buying the witcher, but steam won't let me, since I am not from US.

Basically those are the primary genres I like, but if there is a gem that I should look for by all means fell free to give your opinion, even if it's not one of the genres above.

EDIT:
It doesn't even need to be a NEW game, It can be several years old, if it's still good I'm in!

Fallout 3?

The two friends who are going to give me gifts BOTH have fallout3, and for some reason I did not enjoy it as much...

Isn't the obvious choice Far Cry 2 and Crysis/Crysis 2?

I didn't like crysis. I seemed too bland. Like a whole bunch of graphics without too much to it. I may be wrong, but that was my impression.

Far cry 2 doesn't have a demo?...

Crap.

Do any of these tickle your fancy?
FPS:
Bioshock
Far Cry 2 (mentioned above, but it is rather good)
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games
Call of Duty, Modern Warfare or World at War. Pick whichever setting you like the most, they're both fun (short single player, you'll need to dip into online play to get your moneys worth)

RPG:
Jade Empire
The Witcher is good, but limited on replay value since you're always the same guy (IMHO)
Vampire: Bloodlines

RTS:
Company of Heroes
Dawn of War

TBS:
Silent Storm

Other:
Assassin's Creed is surprisingly fun for a port, with a good mix of gameplay types thrown in.

Good luck!

Bioshock / Mass Effect

Thanks for the opinions!

I already played Bloodlines once, but never finished. But I will wait until it is 10 dollars again.

Now, I'm heavily considering company of heroes... I'm even downloading the demo, to see what the fuss is about.

And the witcher, despite it being short, maybe it is worth a purchase... But, in that case I can't buy it because I'm not in North America. Would anyone be kind enough to gift it for me, if I pay? I can send money through paypal.

EDIT: Just saw that relic super pack in steam. Looks interesting...

What to buy?

How about guns, ammo, canned food, a water-purification-system, and other items for the end? :D

Liar! It is NOT! It's an interactive documentary of the end! The END, I TELL YOU! ;)

Buy Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition for twenty bucks on the PC. Get $100 worth of game for a twenty and thank me later. :) Be sure to download mods that eliminate the world-leveling system, too. I'm using Francesco's Leveling Mod.

Also, I get the best of BOTH worlds. I use my 360 controller for combat/movement (more comfortable for me), and the keyboard/mouse for inventory and the like. I have my hotkeys on my d-pad.

Man, it is PURE AWESOME!

IF oblivion was on steam I would already have gotten it. The problem is, FINDING the game in Brasil is very hard, let alone at a decent price. You said 20 bucks, here you're talking about that 100 you said it was worth it.

Sucks to be here, I can't eve buy my games. And they still wonder why people pirate...

Civilization4!!

So far games I'm considering:

Company of Heroes GOLD (not that it matters, but...) $30 on steam.

The Witcher (needs to be bought by someone in North America) $40 on steam.

Civilization 4 + exp(local retail in today's exchange) ~$45

Oblivion without exp(local retail in today's exchange) ~$40

Now to decide between then...

I totally didn't take your location into account. Sorry! :o

Hope you can find it. It's an amazingly fun game. I'm really, really enjoying it. I loved Morrowind, and with the leveling mod, Oblivion is great, too.

The only place I found it price it at full price despite it being almost 3 years old. THAT and it is out of stock.

The sad part is that if I wanted a pirated copy it would take me less than 15 minutes to find and buy it, and expansions, for less than 5 dollars, total.

It is really a test on someone's honesty.

The other sad part is that if I want to import it, the transportation costs would easily surpass the price of the game itself.

EDIT: That is, IF I can find someplace that ships here. Damn....

EDIT2: It shouldn't be THAT hard to buy a game. I need to go through a lot of hoops to GIVE then money...

I don't really know. But if one is to remove the DVD's from the boxes and send only it and the manuals it would not be so expensive.

If anyone is willing to do that, I could buy it in Amazon (20bucks, didn't see cheaper) and send to your house and you send it to me. Of course we need to know how much it costs first.

If anyone is interest in asking your local mail my location is shown just under my name, heh.

EDIT:

If the price for sending it from here to the USA is any indication it should be around 12~15Dollars.

The cases don't weigh all that much...so I don't see how it would jack the price up all that significantly, unless they're charging by size rather than weight. That would just be messed up.

They charge by a combination of size and weight.

And, just to show how much piracy is rampant around here:

This is an ad from google ads, here in the site. Where "Wii destravado" means it have a mod chip already installed.

And although you can buy SOME wii games here (nintendo published and VERY few select ones, the bigger ones, usually) they cost around 100~120 dollars and you can find pirated games for some 3~5 dollars

Well, I have to say that Crysis is NOT generic or bland at all. The suit powers and the level design allow the player to tackle each encounter in several different ways, including stealthy sniping and "hulk-smash" approaches. The AI is pretty good, and there are several awesome setpieces. Crysis Warhead is even more actiony, I really liked it.

Fallout 3 is another above average game, I already sunk several dozen hours in it. The simple joy of exploring the Capital Wastelands and finding cool places is unforgettable. Sure, the main quest is not very good, but it's like 15% of the experience. If all you saw was the early part inside Vault 101 (which I liked, btw), then you should try playing OUTSIDE the vault, it's another experience entirely.

Both games can be easily found in Rio de Janeiro, I don't know about Campo Grande. They are also available online.

BTW, people from the US CAN gift region-locked Steam games like The Witcher, which is a very good RPG, kinda different from the rest. Just ask someone to gift it to you, then pay the person with Paypal or something.

Oh, and shipping shouldn't be too expensive, even with the full box. It's taxes that are too much. But if a regular person ships a game labeled as "gift", you shouldn't pay any taxes.

Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty World at War, Fallout 3, Crysis, Crysis Warhead. Those would be the only games I'd recommend.

I already have left 4 dead.

I settled for company of heroes and Oblivion GOTY edition, though would accept the Witcher.

Now, I need someone that can buy at amazon and ship it to me. I can pay via paypal. Anyone volunteer for that??

If anyone is willing to gift me the witcher in steam I can accept that instead, since oblivion would be too much hassle anyway. I can pay via paypal as said above. I recently bought WoW WotLK from Chimpbot, he can attest to my honesty.

I will sell you my copy for almost nothing if you pay shipping to Brazil. Because I have two copies of this game. I take PayPal.

Oblivion and The Witcher are both games. You should base your choice on whether you value free-form exploration and open worlds (Oblivion) or a much more highly focused narrative (The Witcher) more highly.

Convenience be damned! :)

I didn't know Atari had it's own digital distribution system. Bought The Wither out of it.

I'm downloading it now, and bought it with the extended download thingy. But I will try to make a backup copy of that. Pit I couldn't buy it of steam, would have been 4 dollars cheaper and I wouldn't have to fear losing it.

Does it come with any DRM that I should know about?

Oh, and Blog thanks for the Oblivion thingy. I will be sending you the paypal money this afternoon. Don't need to hurry too much. I've got my hands full already. Between my games that I still play (like diablo and TF2) and the new things (yay for discounts in steam) like Titan Quest, STALKER, Left 4 dead and The Witcher I have my hands full anyway

nope, not wrong at all. exactly my impressions. therefore its the truth ;)

Actually, you're both terribly wrong. There is nothing bland about a shooter in which you can demolish shacks with koreans, or jump over tanks, or be the fucking Predator. All within 5 minutes of gameplay. Or you can do it all completely differently. The nanosuit and the expansive environments really gave you the tools to create some very cool situations.

The player does need to have at least a smidge of imagination and creativity. If you approach Crysis like it's Doom, it will be definitely bland.
