Lens of Truth has a video (http://www.lensoftruth.com/?p=2059) covering the evolution of Street Fighter II for the home consoles. Starting with the 1992 Super Nintendo release of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior and ending with the latest Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The video shows newly captured footage from the Super Nintendo, Genesis, PC-Engine, 3DO and Xbox.
This will definitely take you back. It is amazing how far we have come since the 90's.

Oh man, did I truly, truly LOVE the SNES Street Fighter II. I played that thing to death. Loved it.
I loved the SNES, too. That's probably my favorite system of all time, not including/comparing with this currently unfinished generation.

Anyone else have that HUGE arcade stick for the nes? I loved playing SFII with that thing.

Not much of a change between systems. Largest change was of course the latest iteration.

Is it just me or is this not at all a video like the evil avatar story says it is?
Maybe I just missed something...

Yeah, that was a bit underwhelming. Other than the minor graphical and audio upgrades going from SF2/SF2T/SF2:CE to SSF2 and then the nearly arcade perfect SSF2T on the 3D0 (with regard to graphics and audio, at least), the only significant jump was to the hi-def remix just released. I kind of wished they had included more footage than just Ken and Ryu on Ryu's stage. Of course, I understand that was to get a reference point for comparison. But honestly, in doing so they made it appear as if the game has been extremely stale throughout its life.

Well, when you think about it Street Fighter 2 really was getting stale. There was a big change from SF2 to SF2:CE in the fact you could play as the bosses. But then SF2:Turbo only added minor gameplay tweaks and increased speed. SSF2 was another welcome leap in that they added 4 new characters and super moves. Then finally SSF2:Turbo repeated what SF2:Turbo did with minor tweaks and speed. Sure each console iteration became closer and closer to the arcade, but in general it was the same game as before. But somehow I justified purchasing each game again and again. Guess I am a sucker for all things SF2.:D

I honestly wished they had shown the versions from the PSX and Dreamcast; they basically skipped two generations at the end, even though they both look different (and play different as well). I also don't understand why they didn't choose a stage with more background animation to show just how much more detailed ports got over the years.

Actually, the supers were added in SSF2T, not SSF2. And I think that was a far more significant change than the 4 new characters and updated art style in SSF2. And don't forget that SSF2T added a new character as well--Akuma. (He's still my favorite to play as.... LK, LK, F, Jab ftw :) )

Yeah, Dhalsim's or Chun-Li's stage would have been much better choices.

I think they use that stage because of that. Less things on the background. It would be more hard to edit. Well, I think ;)

Well, it seems that someone over at Lens of Truth has listened to everyone's comments:
Lens of Truth writes, "Wow, we didn't expect this little feature to be so popular! We had many requests for additional stage comparisons so here is Ryu versus Guile @ Guile's stage. Let us know what stage you would like to see in the poll below."
So head (http://www.lensoftruth.com/?p=2059) on over and check out the new video. This one definitely shows off the changes in background animations over the years. Also let them know what stage you would like to see. I am voting for Kens!

is it just my nostalgia, since I owned the first version for SNES or was it WAY more of an accurate translation? All of the colors and sounds seem so off in the other versions.
I know the SNES had the slower processor, and Sega had Blast Processing, so was there a difference in how they ran?
And what is up with the poor voice processing on the SEGA version, it sounds like a NES compared to the SNES version.
I would have expected them to be more similar. The 3D0 announcer was just strange...

The first SNES game was really a good port for its time. It had missing animations (especially the background) but the colors and sound were really close.

Well, the SNES did have a slower processor but a much more capable sound and video card. The SNES could display 256 colors on screen whereas the Genesis only 64 colors. Also the SNES was able to display a higher resolution image (512x478 vs 320x240).
And what is up with the poor voice processing on the SEGA version, it sounds like a NES compared to the SNES version.
Yeah, the Sega wasn't really known for its voice or sound capabilities. The SNES had 64kB of memory for sound and the Genesis only 8kB. I also believe that the SNES was able to play more simultaneous samples as well (8 vs 6).

I completely agree. Very odd on the 3DO version. But even the new SSF2THD Remix announcer is weird. Also, the SSF2THD Remix version is missing the "Perfect" sound bite.

Damn dude. You're smart!
I was hoping someone would give me a hard time for that Blast Processing comment though....
Did not realize the Genesis was so far behind in sound processing either.
A little OT, but a long time ago I was reading about the Atari 7800 vs the NES and am sure that I read that they had similar processing power. Maybe it was just referring to the fact that both were 8 bit and that is all i understood at the time.
Anyway for giggles I tried Double Dragon on the 7800 on PSP.
Holy shit that sucks compared to the NES.
Anyway... Thanks again for the thorough answer!
