A co-worker was looking for a copy of Quake 3 Arena and I could of sworn it was a free download at some point like Far Cry is now. Anyone know where to find it I wasn't dreaming?

Looks like it is still for sale. I think what you might be thinking of is they released the source for it, however they did not release the content, ie levels etc.
EDIT: Here is the source http://www.idsoftware.com/business/techdownloads/

You are dreaming. There is a killer id Software deal on Steam with a ton of games for like $99.00 or something along those lines.
I'm sure you can also get used/new copies of Q3A on Ebay for next to nothing.
This was the one game I was always hoping that id Software would port to Xbox Live and it never happened.
