Dragon Quest and/or Final Fantasy Not 360 Bound [Archive]

As rumor yesterday (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7098) surfaced that Dragon Quest and/or Final Fantasy could find its way onto the XBox 360 Platform, at least, according to the president of Square Enix. Apparantly you can't even trust the president anymore (heh) as 1UP (http://1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3145718) is confirming that there are inaccuracies in the original Reuters report (http://today.reuters.co.jp/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=marketsNews&storyID=URI:urn:newsml:reuters.com:20051115:MTFH08 952_2005-11-15_08-59-26_NTK2651149:1).

There are several possibilities here. There could be a mistranslation (we're currently contacting Square Enix), Wada could simply be conjecturing and his comments are being blown out of proportion, or he's referencing Square Enix's plans for online gaming, which would make more sense considering Final Fantasy XI's appearance on Xbox 360.
Interesting it was shot down so fast, sounds like someone either A) Let the cat out of the bag too early or B) Pissed off someone they shouldn't have.

Of course...there could be inaccuracies in the inaccuracies!

I like the headline though. We still have no idea what the inaccuracies are but all of a sudden the franchises aren’t coming to the 360 because there are inaccuracies.

The original information sounded like Wada didn't want to burn his bridges by saying absolutely no to any next-gen console. I'm pretty sure the problem Square-Enix had after the fact was that his vague generalities were twisted around to make everyone believe he was speaking of Xbox 360.

Actually, in the original article they (not wada) specifically mention the 360. His reply "maybe on both, maybe on one" can be taken in a million and 3 ways. Squeenix have mentioned a few times that they are considering what, if anything they will release on the 360 in the future, but I think it's easy to see a bump in revolution and port to the 360 for FF11 as a safe bet.

My take from this "article", which is stupid considering it's 3 lines and is hopelessly vague, is that Squeenix are testing the waters very carefully here. The fact that it was Rueters finance and that Wada talks about stock prices almost as much as games and platforms is their way of seeing how investors react before they make any commitment.

Square Enix is working on another MMORPG (Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion) so Wada is likely referring to this game at the very least.

Did you see their typo? They haven't reviewed VII yet, actually, because 1up did not exist when the game came out.

Square Enix is in a strong position right now to negotiate terms for the next generation of consoles. Letting it slip that they "might" start making builds for the Xbox and other consoles will make Sony nervous, especially at a time when Sony is facing widespread consumer backlash. Square Enix can use the possibility of developing for other platforms as a bargaining chip for reduced fees and publishing costs from Sony. In exchange for exclusivity, they get a sweeter deal.

All it takes is a few rumors of jumping ship.

This is not to say that we won't see a Square title or two on Xbox. Final Fantasy XI is bound for the 360; but I suspect that their exclusivity agreement has already expired on that title, and they have very little to lose by porting a game that is already finished.

Eh? it was the Japanese branch of Reuters talking to the president of Squeenix, there's hardly room for mistranslation. A misquote or crossed wires is possible given the ambiguity of the article, but as is, you'd have a hard time translating it as anything else.

Mistranslation was listed as a possibility in the 1up article but you're probably right, Reuters wouldn't make mistakes like that.

You know, I've been hearing a rumor that FFXII is getting another delay past March 12th, maybe they've decided to go whole hog and make it PS3 launch? A stretch, I realize. But interesting nonetheless.

Attempting to read the Japanese article original it looks like Wada will announce what systems (both or one) get Final Fantasy in May at E3. Reuters would have really had to have messed up to some how get these comments wrong to the point where Wada isn’t considering the 360. Either way I doubt 1Up will get a definite answer out of them till next year’s E3, even if they wait another 7 hours.

This discussion is pretty crazy though. As is this article. 1 UP still hasn’t received any clarification on this. Makes me think they may not have been getting any to begin with and it was just damage control for them not wanting to believe that there was a chance, no matter how slim of both systems getting Final Fantasy.
