The day you've all been waiting for is here! Games for Windows Live finally has its own standalone client. You can download it here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6F966188-1E50-41C3-A689-181EDC57C0E0). What do you get? Access to the GFWL Marketplace! w00t! There's not much else going on here other than that here though, but I'm sure eventually they'll be rolling out additional functionality in the future. It's a step in the right direction, but as the folks over at 1Up stated, there's little reason to keep the client up and running after you're done downloading.

Setup package for Games for Windows - LIVE v2.0. The package installs for the Games for Windows - LIVE Redistributable that enables the in-game Games for Windows - LIVE experience as well as the Games for Windows - LIVE Client that enables the out-of-game experience, including Games for Windows - LIVE Marketplace.

Thanks 1Up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3171624).

One reason to keep it running, is if you have friends on Live on 360s and your 360 has RROD, and you want to keep in touch then it works nicely.

Dude, this is for Windows... not for a Mac.

Just say no to the update and it will still work.

I guess you win the asshole prize then. Congratulations. GFWL is the only thing that will save PC gaming now that's its FREE for users and devs.

Actually I don't think PC gaming ever really needed "saving" but if it did, Steam already did it and did it much better.
Not that I would expect that much insight from the inventor of the Elektro-Post.

I would enjoy the gaming for windows live client if it would communicate with my xbox live buddy list. Im sure that's coming in time and why would anyone complain about cross platform communication from the PC to your XBL friends for free? As far as games and demo's, on the PC we really dont need a portal for that kind of thing but it does draw attention and could be a one stop visit for the more casual gamer that doesn't scour the web for news. Im also looking forward to more integrated achievements and real competition to steam.

Ok, I am incredibly close to leaving this forum permanently like those other guys did.

I do not take lightly to being made a mockery of. This is twice now in the span of a single thread.

One more mockery and I'm outta here. I'll quit the folding team and never post here again. This is not a threat, it is a promise.

Want to see me go? Badmouth me again. I am well aware from 15 years of online forum posting that one should have a thick skin, but I also have the luxury of choosing other home bases for my gaming news, and I am quite content to let a few bad apples spoil the pie for me.

lilbunnyfufu has always been an ass and this furtive guy seems to get incentive as well. I dont blame you Elektro, I think some of them are leftovers who just want to act like the "guys that left" ie being elitist condescending pricks who are too full of themselves to have an objective and civil conversation.

I'm going to be honest with you; I don't think many people care who stays and goes on these forums.

You're probably right, not that I care what others think. But that doesn't mean I enjoy being a laughing stock because of my pro-MS opinions.

Oh, and here's a hint. If you're going to give me the honor of coining a new phrase after a perceived habit of mine, at least have the intelligence to spell it correctly. Or perhaps that is part of the insult.

Step away from the PC, take a deep breath and avoid the thread entirely. About all you can do now :o

Fwiw I think the insult is out of line and in bad taste. That kind of mockery and perceived insider joking around here is getting stale.

Easy boys, my post was made in good fun. If you took it incorrectly then I apologize, but seriously... just relax a bit. Sorry for spelling your name wrong Elektro. :)

Hey Elektro, I didn't mean to cause a meltdown over there. It really was meant all in fun. That said, if you do decide to leave and go to the other place you'll find me there too!

And to TRY and move this back on topic a bit, I am happy to see other competitors in the digital distribution space. A little competition will be good for steam. Hopefully we'll see steam offer a few more single title sales on top of their great bundle deals. My issue with this was the same issue I had with Steam when it first arrived. It's arriving buggy and without any features to draw me in. It's basically just a store front which I don't need taking space up on my system right now.

It's actually more than a storefront. It is also an upgrade to the GFWL infrastructure. Which means you get an enhanced version of the Live interface whenever you play a Live enabled PC game like Fallout 3, Gears of War, Lost Planet Colonies, etc.

The main reason I support GFWL is that Achievements have ruined me, and its hard for me, but not impossible, to play a PC game that doesn't have achievements. The secondary reason is that it combats some forms of DRM by establishing very good standards that are enforced. For example, if Spore has been a GFWL title, it NEVER would have had the DRM restriction of not supporting more than one user account per computer. The enforced Live rules dictate that every game must support as many accounts as there are unique gamertags on the PC.

I can understand reservations against Live back when it was PAID for users and developers. But now that it is free, the only reasons to be against GFWL becoming dominant in PC gaming are 1) ignorance and 2) an irrational hatred of Microsoft. Sadly, most of the world's population falls squarely into one of these two categories!!

I agree that it's irrational to hate Microsoft, but looking at their past behaviour I think it's perfectly valid to be concerned about the lengths they go to in attempting to gain dominance in a market and some of the consequences of those lengths, and also what they do in markets in which they are dominant. Just because I don't trust Microsoft to be the one stop shop in a market doesn't mean I'm ignorant or a hater.

too bad that even on the inturweb they have to still use the kiddy blocks of points to buy shit.

would it be so hard to at least online let me buy at the exact purchase price with a credit card? rather than waste my time with blocks of points?

cocksuckers, i'll keep NOT buying their shit, thank you very much.

Ummm... except that Microsoft already HAS dominance in the PC market! So what are you afraid of? ;)

A valid point of annoyance is that 100 points != 100 cents, and this can be attributed to an attempt at customer deception. However, please realize that that they also wanted a universal, international system. A title is 800 points around the planet, which makes things more cost effective and easier to manager on their end.

For the consumer, an added benefit is that they can buy point cards at firesale prices if they find them, and to avoid paying sales tax on them no matter where they live.
