Neverax sends along word that they have opened the Alpha test for, Ryzom Ring (http://www.ryzom-ring.com/), the upcoming expansion pack to the MMORPG, The Saga of Ryzom. The Ryzom Ring expansion pack will be the first time user-created content can be added to an online RPG.

Nevrax (http://www.nevrax.com/), the developer and publisher of the massively-multiplayer science-fiction fantasy game The Saga of Ryzom, announced today it has launched the alpha test of Ryzom Ring, its first expansion.

“Ryzom Ring is an extremely powerful expansion pack,” says Daniel Miller, CTO and Executive Producer of Ryzom Ring. “The opportunity is finally given to the players to become not only participants, but creators.”

Ryzom Ring offers players of The Saga of Ryzom a complete set of simple and intuitive tools to design and implement adventures and maps thus empowering them to imagine, create, launch, share and enjoy an almost infinite combination of online scenarios. It is the first time that a massively multiplayer online role-playing game has offered its players such a large scale creation and editing platform.

“Ryzom’s future is, from now on, in the hands of players,” Miller added.

From Alpha Test to Launch

Beginning with 50 of its most loyal players, new testers will be continually added to the alpha team until early 2006, when the Ring will enter its beta phase, during which all of The Saga of Ryzom’s players will be welcome. Also in Q1 2006, there will be further open beta and load testing opportunities before the Ring’s official launch by the end of Q1.

A new website (http://www.ryzom-ring.com/) is currently being created to inform all players and testers of the status of the Ring’s development, and which will contain new communication and monitoring tools for all the testers and our future “creators” once testing begins.

I doubt it.

In any case, I can't imagine this user-created content will be very compelling -- if the average MMO player will be able to do it, set your expectations to low. Picture dumbed down CoV-style base-building, combined with the clever "scripting" of the UO player-vendors.

"Hi adventurer! My name is [ORLY?] and welcome to [ur mom is fat]. Please kill the 3 monsters in the empty room next to me and I'll give you a treasure!"

I thought the same thing, DeadPixel. I didn't even know it made it through Beta and into release. I can only imagine that this expansion is an attempt to draw a handful of new users in. But who knows? Maybe they have a loyal following that is keeping them in business.

Is this even statistically feasible?
