To bring some conclusion to PS3 Won't Play Used Games (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6912), a little research has Playfuls (http://www.playfuls.com/news_3827.html) reporting that the Playstation 3 will not be locked to any one machine.
However, in order to give an official answer to an already increasing wave of unrest among the gamers, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has stated, through one of its' spokespersons, that "this is false speculation and that PlayStation 3 software will not be copy protected to a single machine but will be playable on any PlayStation 3 console".

An absolutely ridiculous rumor based on vague assumptions and information that was taken out of context turns out to be false? Oh Gosh No!

"this is false speculation and that PlayStation 3 software will not be copy protected to a single machine but will be playable on any PlayStation 3 console".
Translation: "We were going to do it, but after the huge rootkits fiasco and our less then stellar PS2 holiday 2005 line-up, we figured that legions of angry Playstation fans with torches and pitchforks storming the Sony corporate headquarters might hurt PS3 sales. So we're just going to say we never intended to implement this new DRM and hope you all believe us."

Translation: I have no idea how copy protection hardware works, but the original rumor-mill article (based on a generic patent that actually seems to refer to a machine that can WRITE to media) made Sony look bad, so let me jump on the bandwagon.

Relief.
I was fairly sure that wouldn't happen, but it's nice to have it confirmed.

Notice how this article has small ammounts of replies and is in favor of pro sony yet the threads that are anti sony are swamped with replies.

Really there isn't much to discuss. As in the other thread; if they allowed this kind of protection to be applied to the PS3 it would be suicide, but that doesn't mean they won't use it in the future.
It reeks of major damage control though, Sony is now responding to rumour mills.

Of course it reeks of damage control. It IS damage control. Which I find perfectly acceptable when the damage is retarded conjecture based on suppositions made by people who don't understand patents, let alone patents in Japanese.

But even before with conjecture so bad and damaging, Sony before would go, "Huh what, we don't comment on speculations or rumors, sorry."

Let me guess...was it Red Cloak that submitted the newspost about the "rumor" here on Evil Avatar? I remember the newspost clearly, but I can't quite place a name to the poster. This just shows how ridiculous speculation gets, especially when people try to fan the flames of a hatred agenda.
Anyway, if this was Vegas, I'd bet on him as submitter.

Who's Vegas? It was our illustrious bapenguin who authored the "rumor" that I had the unfortunate privledge to first post under. Like you, I was convinced Red Cloak's dirty fingers were all over it. Got a surprise when I went digging in the forums to link it.

Ahem...if this were LAS VEGAS, I'd bet on RED CLOAK as the submitter.
You know, as in this would have been a bet with good chance of you winning. Good odds. Casino jackpot type odds. That sort of thing.
Ah, the ambiguity of language. :o

The only reason they responded was because they were contacted, as the mini article says. What were they supposed to say when asked? It isn't as if they made a public press announcement.

It didn't say anything about who contacted who. But it really is a "public press announcement" when you have an official response from a spokesperson.
Maybe Ken wasn't allowed a day pass for the huge media event it should have been.

That was a stupid rumor lol , they might as well get out of the console business if they made the PS3 only work with brand new titles as no parent would buy it knowing they couldn't rent , buy used games or let their kids friends bring games over.

I like how the headline is truly idiotic.
I'm pretty sure the PS3 will have DRM.

Actually it was me. I read it on a few "big name" sites. Apparantly Sony took notice.

I simply reworded my source's headline into something a little "punchier". If you have any suggestions, by all means, I'm willing to listen.

How about 'SCEE Kills Stupid Rumor'?
Maybe I am Red Cloak, trying to throw suspicion off myself. Ever think of that?
No, because I'm Red Cloak.
