Microsoft has unveiled the details of the XBox Live Marketplace as well as revealed what things will be available for download for certain titles and the cost of that involved. From the looks of it, most games will have trailers available to download for free, Gamer Pictures for about $0.25, and Dashboard themes for a little under $2.

Also listed are game prices for XBox Live Arcade...remember its about 80 points per dollar.

* Bankshot Billiards 2™ (1200 points) – pixelStorm, Inc.
* Bejeweled 2 (800 points) – Popcap Games
* Gauntlet (400 points) – Midway Home Entertainment
* Geometry Wars Retro Evolved (400 points) – Bizzare Creations
* Hardwood Backgammon (400 points) – Silver Creek Entertainment
* Hardwood Hearts (400 points) – Silver Creek Entertainment
* Hardwood Spades (400 points) – Silver Creek Entertainment
* Hexic® HD (full version included free with Xbox 360 System) – Microsoft Game Studios
* Joust (400 points) – Midway Home Entertainment
* Mutant Storm Reloaded (800 points) – PomPom Games
* Outpost Kaloki (800 points) – Wahoo Studios
* Robotron 2084 (400 points) – Midway Home Entertainment
* Smash TV (400 points) – Midway Home Entertainment
* Wik: Fable of Souls (800 points) – Reflexive Entertainment
* Zuma (800 points) – Popcap Games
Full Press Release inside with details.

Not bad....the dashboard themes seem a little over priced....though the quality of the ones I've seen are pretty top notch. The prices on Live Arcade seem just right to me. Geometry Wars Retro Evolved is a STEAL at 5 bucks.

I wonder if EA had to price their gamer pictures higher because of licensing with the NFL/NBA?

It's really cool that you can download and play demo's with the new X-Box live features.

Wondering how this is going to affect the Magazine aspect of promotions?

Good to see the Joust / Robotron remakes coming in at $5. With the previous arcade prices I was worried they would be $10-$15.

I must say that I'm really impressed with the marketplace, especially the PA skins and RvB videos (don't have the DVDs). Free game demos kick ass, and a couple free music videos? Awesome. The prices of some of the games (like Joust) suprises me, I was expecting 10 bucks. All in all, Nov. 22nd can't come soon enough!

Wow, I wasn't expecting demo availability so early. The selection and pricing is pretty damn fair, too, imho. The details are falling into place for this to be a pretty fucking splendid launch, now it depends on the quality of the full-price games (Kameo's doing pretty fair in reviews) and how quickly Microsoft can get these buggers out to the people that want them.

Yeah, they had that for this generation of Live Arcade, too. It's brilliant, but I haven't bought any of the games on Arcade because when I wanted a fix, the demo was just enough for the 5 or 10 minutes I was looking for. That, and they're twenty fucking dollars. I'd rather have Psi-Ops, or something, christ. Joust or Geometry Wars for 5 bucks, though? I'm all in.

I'm really curious how Sony can seemingly ignore this level of functionality in favor of a "we'll let the developers handle it" strategy. This is feature-rich and gamer-friendly.

</ObSonyQuery>

I'm a bit disappointed that gamer pictures cost cash. I'm somewhat hopeful that perhaps you'll be able to unlock, say, one game-specific picture if you actually own the game. Yes, I know it's only 25 cents, but it's still 25 friggin' cents whether they call it "20 Xbox Live Marketplace points" or "chibumbas." The themes seem a bit expensive to me as well. Other than that the pricepoints of the Live Arcade games seems quite nice. I can see me picking up several for casual gaming or even trying to convice the wife that gaming is fun. I had her hooked on Bejeweled on my Palm a couple years ago, I can see Bejeweled 2 or Zuma roping her in, especially with the wireless controller and an HDTV.

I'd like to see how the demo downloads are implemented. If current PC game demos are anything to go by, then the packages could be as large as 512MB-1GB. Sure, there's ample hard drive space for that, but I'm curious to see if there's some sort of automated management for big downloaded files like that - only a couple of demos at a time, maybe, or a mechanism to toss the oldest/least-used downloads.

Between the launch list, the backwards-compatibility list (with unexpected HD enhancements), and today's Marketplace announcement, I'm really starting to get excited about the 360's launch. I have a preorder that should arrive on day one, but as recently as a week ago I was feeling a little ambivalent about the system. Now I'm thinking about how much time I might be able to take off from work...

My current Live membership was going to expire the end of last month, so I called Microsoft to cancel it, but the guy on the phone told me it was transferable to the new XBox Live Premium service.

So basically, as long as you know your gamer tag, I believe you should be good to go on launch day.

Definetly going to pick up the Penny Arcade theme with the 150 points that come with a gold account. Gonna give Wik and Geometry Wars (and probably most of the other games) a try since they have free demos available, and if they turn out well I'm sure I'll pick up at least one if not both of them.

If this is the standard for the Live Marketplace, then I'll just say I was wrong about it the whole time. I'll still reserve my judgement to see what kind of game content starts popping up there.

Plus, if Microsoft is going to make you pay for Avatars through the Marketplace, I don't see the ability to upload your own picture coming anytime soon.

Actually, their point system is a damn fine way of making money. I mean, who is going to sit there with a calculator to compute how many points each thing really costs on the Marketplace. 150 points? Eh, I'll get it. 80 points? Sure...let's go nuts.

But if it was actual currency? $2.50? Hmm...I dunno. $6.75? Aww, nuts.

The prices seem fair though, Tuesday can't come fast enough. I loved watching that demo of Geometry Wars on 1up.com, i'll definitely pick that one up!

If I remember right, the gamer pictures were supposed to be uploadable, so you wouldn't necessarily have to purchase one. God, that video was pretty. Gameplay didn't look changed much, though, which is too bad, but I spent half the time I played in PGR2 on Geometry Wars. I'll pay 5 bucks to see what evolutionary changes there are.

Anyway, that clip really showed off the potential for Live Arcade games. They can take simpler gameplay and match that with wonderful visual potential. Open access to every console owner at 5 bucks a pop, and wow. Live Arcade sounded amazing when they first mentioned it, but the initial implementation wasn't great. I'll agree with whoever said it above, halving the price and there for everybody means that it's really going to be a close substitute for the old arcades.

Color me tickled.

If they start keeping real currency numbers than they have to register as a bank in every country where they're available and follow a ridiculous number of international currency laws. With points they can get around that. Basically if they kept currency instead of points they never would have been able to do this.

Uh, someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't every game supposed to have Gamer Points that you earn by completing various objectives in the game, say, completing it or something? Are these not the same points? I was under the impression that every game was required to have X number of points that you could earn by completing objectives and you could take those point into the marketplace and spend them.

MosBen

Here:

Then Henson showed off the Xbox Dashboard, accessible at all times when you're using the system. This looked similar to what was shown at E3, although slightly more polished. The interface had a few pages, or "blades," to scroll through: Xbox Live, Games, Media, etc. From the Xbox Live page you could see your Gamertag, complete with picture, as well as your ranking (every Xbox 360 game will have a possibility to earn 1000 points through gameplay), your friends list, and any messages you have. A button linking to the store is also available so that you can purchase extra downloads.

http://xbox.gamespy.com/articles/642/642835p2.html

Assuming this is still accurate info you won't have to buy lots of points if you buy games.

While some of this stuff is cool, I have to say I'm a bit bummed because I think that gamers without broadband (like me) are getting the short end of the stick, especially with extras. For example, if this didn't exist, I am pretty sure that Project Gotham 360 would come with Geometry Wars packaged in for free, just like on the original Xbox. As it is, not only do you have to pay for it, if you don't have Broadband, you can't even get it. There was also a news story a few weeks back that Joust and Geometry Wars could come packaged on every Harddrive. Apparently that's not true now either, because you have to BUY both.

What is cool about this is that it provides another medium for developers to get there software to console consumers and, as a result, it could spur some tremendously interesting projects as well as independent development.

If you actually know what you're talking about Achilles, I'll say OK!I was actually looking at opening an on-line business that dealt with storing currency... kind of. So I did some looking into this. I'm not sure if that's the only reason MS is doing it but using points would solve a ton of marketplace problems in that area and they probably couldn't get it off the ground in time otherwise.

As a couple others have mentioned it seems to be a cool thing to offer points with the games that you buy, offering money instead might just seem strange. It also helps put all the prices on an even playing field, as-in you don't have to list the price in pounds, Canadian dollars, yen, ect. You can just have one number up there that everyone understands.

That is an easy one. This stuff costs MONEY, and lots of it, not just development and startup, but ongoing. Microsoft needs an edge like this to catch Sony, and that is why they're ponying up the cash for it.
