Neverwinter Nights 2 (http://pc.ign.com/articles/666/666403p1.html)
November 14, 2005 - Now that the tangled weave of Interplay, Black Isle, BioWare and TSR has basically been straightened out, we're starting to see more work done by developers who had a hand in games like Baldur's Gate, Fallout, and the more recent Neverwinter Nights, which was an inspired creation for more than just its gameplay. AIt was accompanied by an amazing toolset that has been used by the community to create thousands of modules.

This looks like it's shaping up to be a great game. I enjoyed the heck out of the first one, more for creating my own modules/adventures. With even more choices and control in that area of the game, I look to have even more fun than before and make almost anything I can come up with. This can't come out fast enough for me...

I think I have to rate NWN as my favorite game of all time, considering I met my wife there.

Oh yeah, didn't they mention that they were adding that functionality to NWN2, and make it easier to do?

Once I beat broadband out of my telephone co-op and get a new rig, I'll snag this one for sure.

Well, theres some question as to whether a persistant world will be easier or harder in NWN2. A database hack was created for NWN by the community by reverse engineering some calls. This allowed people who run persistant worlds to use a real database (for more than a year there was zero database functionality in NWN, and even after that the table and search systems are very primitive). Last I read a week or two ago, the PW community "shouldn't get its hopes up" about database functionality in NWN2 (this from an Oblivion emp in a chat). Hard to have a persistant world without a solid database.

Obsidian has said quite a few times that if anything, NWN 2 will have built in ODBC at launch or soon after in a patch. What is doesn't have is the ability to interface directly with a database server like MS-SQL, MySQL or Postgre. The reason it doesn't have direct access methods is due to licensing and keeping the cost low. Interfaces to MS-SQL cost bucks, MySQL used in a commerical environment isnt' free so that really leaves you with Postgre. But, since it has ODBC built it, I don't think the absense of having direct interfaces matters much...
