One lucky fellow claims to have been able to play Perfect Dark Zero by loading his early-arrival copy in his shop's 360 kiosk after closing. He reports:

Now I don't want to ruin anything for anyone and I really was only able to play about 10 minutes and try out the multiplayer maps (few of them). And quite honestly, coming from a level 30 Halo 2 player....i dont think Ill be picking up master chief anytime soon. i cant even begin to describe my amazement of this game.Source (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=366118)

Surely MS has done something with the kiosk boxes to stop this sort of thing?

Cool, but...how exactly do we know some dude posting on the Steam forums without any pictures making enormously vague statements about the game actually played it?

Why would they want to stop this? The kiosk is an X360, and it works as such, the cost to mod it to keep it from playing other titles would be silly and not worth the effort.

Played it this afternoon @Futuris Game Experience (Gent, Belgium). It was fun. So was the new DoA and PGR3.

Why would they? The guy bought the game, the store was closed, the system never left the store.

Viral.... maybe?

It's all a viral marketing campaign. Maybe...when you go and buy the game, they'll deny you to buy it because the release is just a viral marketing campaign for Xbox 1080.

This seems like bunk to me. At the very least it's unsubstantiated.

Why? The store I work in gets some games a few weeks before release, why wouldn't it be possible? It's not like he played Doom 8 or Quake 9.

There's no reason this wouldn't work if he actually had the game available to put in. It IS an Xbox 360 in the kiosk's after all, and after release they'll expect these stores to put newer games in them.

When I worked at Babbages (now Gamestop) we certainly hung around a day before PS2 was suppose to release and check out the new games on our demo kiosk. We did the same on the DC unit. Nothing unsual here at all. Lucky bastards...

Just because its possible doesnt mean its likely. We don't really have any reason to believe this didnt happen, but we dont have any reason to believe it did happen, either.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but this guy is flat out lying. No copies of Perfect Dark have shipped to stores yet.

Ok, mister "I-know-this-because-I-work-at-Microsoft-and-know-everything-that-is-going-on-in-my-company".

Even if he's lying, there have been more than enough people who did actually play the game.

Are you sure the game hasn't shipped yet? When I was at my Gamestop today picking up my Kameo the guy mentioned that they were expecting the other Microsoft titles sometime soon (maybe today even). Then again, the guy said he played it at closing LAST NIGHT. Since there hasn't been any official announcement of it shipping yet, you are probably right, it probably is fake.

Unfortunately, yes I'm sure. Though PGR3 should be showing up quite soon.

I didn't say it's not possible -- I said it's probably a lie and unsubstantiated. There's no reason to believe he's telling the truth. Thus it's a pretty weak news story.

I think what Varsity ment with his comment is that they've done something with the case that holds it in. I dunno, if I worked at EB i would do the same thing, in fact I'd probibally stay there overnight and play through the whole thing!

The kiosks are real 360's with a demo disc in it I believe.

unless it was an Xbox rep withs ome advanced demo or something i quite doubt that he actually played this. as far as im aware Perfect Dark Zero hasnt shipped yet. Our store has our 360 Kiosk, but we havnt recieved any games as of yet, but our shipment of 360 "core" systems, aswell as the basic controllers and Kameo arrives on Monday. (which is quite abit earlier than expected)

Kameo is also in stores and I've played it. And it's not the demo that is in the kiosk either. The only things we've been able to confirm they've disabled are backwards compatability (if any) -we tried Halo 2 and it was a no go- and connecting up an iPod and a PSP both a no go (the selection of those types of devices was greyed out). We did play a movie (Muppet Movie...yeah, baby!) and it played easily.

The games and accessories as they come out are NOT street dated so why not play them? You'd better believe that next Wednesday, the 16, we will be staying late for a little product testing to be sure. :)

I will add that I find it hard to believe he's played PD0. I suppose it's possible he might have an advance copy but as far as stores getting them...it's up in the air. The majority of our stuff arrives middle to end of next week.

In this anonymous internet world you can't trust any message board. I'll bet their are employees from the big 3 posting here. Hell just say something slightly neg and you get trashed like tara reid at an open bar.

Anyway. Bogus or not, who cares? 10 minutes running alone in a few multiplayer maps and OMFG PDZ > HALO!!!!!1 ?

Sure buddy. We're glad you like it.

When I worked at Toys R Us I had a key to the Xbox display before the system had released.

And even if you didn't already have a key, it wouldn't be hard to make one. Most of them use those generic little keys that are just hollowed out cylinders with a notch on the end on the outer edge that you see used for all kinds of display cases.

This wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I doubt he actually played it, but if he did it wouldn't surprise me.

Remember these days it is standard practice for games stores to just open up all the games, and I'm sure several of them get "tested."

I just don't bother going to the big gamestore chains anymore. Luckily there is a local chain here that doesn't open the titles before selling them, plus they have used copies of about every game and console imaginable. Unfortunately I will be moving in a month, so no more shopping there. :(

When the 360 does ship do you think people that actually dropped $500+ for everything will actually say they feel the new Xbox was overhyped? I doubt it. It looks good but theres nothing I havent seen so far that makes me drop my jaw in amazement..
