The final part of my series on Gaming Mice is up today covering the Logitech G5 (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?p=132205). Could I have finally found the perfect gaming mouse?

Out of the box, you get 3 DPI adjustments for the G5 (400, 800, 2000). When you install the G5 software you can customize the 3 adjustments as well as add 2 more for a total of 5. You can set the mouse to any DPI resolution between 400 and 2000 in increments of 10. Not only that, you can set the DPI resolution independently for the X and Y axis for the mouse. All that sounds impressive, but Logitech took it a bit farther. You can set 5 custom DPI resolutions PER game on your PC. So each game can have it’s own profile that the software automatically turns on when the game is launched. I was VERY impressed.

I heard this mouse was created by the hand of God, to slay Satan and his bunny-hopping goons.

Gosh dang it Bap, I've already spent to much on my comp in the past month. Stop tempting me!

Nice review btw.

I've found that for CS:Source, 1849 in the X and 1533 in the Y worked wonderfully for precision headshotting, but when I'm playing WoW, 482 in the X and 489 in the Y gave a softer, more organic feel.

Zuma, of course, requires the full two-kay-by-two-kay that the device has to offer, and then some.

Why not 1846x1531? :)

You didn't find the perfect mouse, because you haven't reviewed it.

Get your hands on a G7.

speaking of which, I just checked the bestbuy website and my local one in chelsea has them in stock, I'll pick one up this afternoon, yay. :D

I second the motion for a G7, all the benefits of a G5 without the cord.

2 batteries, one in mouse one charging in receiver, battery life is about 24 hours of use but swap takes 5 seconds.

Best of all no wallwart, it charges the battery off the USB.

I don't like cordless mice for gaming and I prefer the MX1000 over the G7 for non-gaming.

The G7 doesn't have the weighting system correct? From the press material I got it didn't seem like it.

cordless vs cord = FUD. The luddites downing all cordless mice are the same ones who think all LCD panels are 25ms.

I consider the weighting system to be an interesting feature(95% gimmick) that you'll probably use only once, just to make the new mouse feel similar to your old mouse. I've been using logitech cordless mice for gaming for years, I won't need to tweak the weight for it to feel familiar. The only time weight has ever been an issue for me was when a mouse was too light. I don't think I have to worry about that in a cordless laser.

G7 with dual batteries that are easily swapped/charged cures my only gripe about cordless mice.

The only valid complaint about the G7 I see at this point is the reduction in buttons. If you programmed every single button on previous logitech gaming mice, and used them regularly, then you might not want a G7. For the two people on the planet who fit that scenario, you have my sympathies.

The G7's just going to be heavy, whether it does or not, because of the battery.

When I bought my MX700 I tried to game with it for over a month. Doesn't do it for me, whether it's the weight or something else, I don't know. But after a month I switched back to a cord and everything felt right. It certainly is not FUD, I don't want to have two mice on my desktop. But I suck with cordless mice.

I've yet to use a mouse that massed so much that I thought inertia was hurting my performance. I can see somebody who has to pick their mouse up and recenter it all the time having a problem with weight. I don't do that.

Weight is a preference, imho. If you prefer a very light mouse, then you don't want any cordless mouse, and you don't need a corded mouse with a weight system, since you won't put any of the weights into it at all.

Personal preference.

I've been using a mx700 since they came out for gaming and it feels great.

If it is personal preference, than it isn't FUD. But you're not one of the people saying that cordless mice don't work for gaming, are you? You're saying it wasn't right for you, which is fine.

No, you're right it's a preference thing. It's not heavy to the point that I can't move it as quickly as I like, I'm just used to a much lighter mouse after 10-15 years of gaming with one. When I use a heavier one I just feel off.

But you're not one of the people saying that cordless mice don't work for gaming, are you

Nope, I'm saying they don't work for me. I tried them after a lot of other people said they worked for them.

Doens't sound like there's enough of a difference between my MX518 and the G5 for me to bother about upgrading yet.

The MX518 so far has more than enough adjustment and resolution to be really great for the games I play. I can't imagine 400dpi meaning all that much, especially since I almost never use the mouse at the 1600dpi setting anyway.

One note on the weight issue with respect to the G7. The batteries in the G7 are much much lighter than those in your typical cordless logitech mouse. One review compared it to a fully weighted G5, just for a reference point.

A fully weighted G5 felt as heavy or heavier than a mx1000. Only messed around with it fully weighted for 5 minutes, but it was pretty heavy.

Perhaps I AM a luddite (doubtful, I think anybody accusing anybody else on EA of being a luddite is grossly abusing the term), but I am never easy with a cordless mouse. I just like knowing that my mouse is fully powered. With a cordless, I'm always wondering if my batteries are starting to get low.

How is that Razor mouse? I keep thinking of getting one. It looks like it would be comfortable to use.

For what it's worth, my mx1000 goes a 5+ days at a time without needing a recharge. If I'm using it heavily it goes two days, and of course there is a three light battery meter right on top of the mouse. When they are running out(about 30-45 minutes left) you'll get a warning and the meter will go from green to red.

If you put it on the recharge cradle when you are not using it it will never run low on power.

Batteries and power are not something I even think of.

That is one of the great features of the g7. It has socketed batteries, if one runs low, just swap them(can do it in less than 10 seconds).

Anyways, I just got back from Best Buy and have plugged the G7 in. It works fine on a func f30.r. Oh, and it is much lighter than the mx700 sitting next to it.

This mouse isn't heavy at all. A good upgrade for me, I've got socketed batteries, a lighter mouse, laser precision, larger/smoother/durable mouse feet, and a tilt mousewheel.

I really like how the usb receiver slots into the charging station. I can just pocket the receiver(size of a very small thumb drive), the spare battery(size of 2 cf type 2 cards) and the mouse is suddenly portable. You don't need any extra software for basic operation, so no requirements to install new software wherever you want to use the mouse.

Oh, some mouse weight comparisons:

mx700 175 grams
mx1000 168 grams
diamondback 91 grams
mx518 106 grams
g5 112 to 154 grams
g7 124 grams

NOTE: I updated the weights from the original post, found a better source for the g5 weight, and added the g7 weight.

A nifty thing I just noticed about the g7. When you don't move it, it switches the display from speed to battery life---which was already known. I just noticed that it actually fades out the speed(amber) and then fades in the battery life(green) and then fades the green out shortly thereafter.

One other thing: no wall wart. It is fully powered off of the USB port, unlike previous logitech wireless mice.

...and of course I can't find anything anywhere saying exactly what the g7 weighs.

Interesting, holding both G5 and MX518, I'd say the G5 is lighter.

The numbers I found probably include the weight of the cord(and I found another source that for g5 weight that is lighter than what I had previously, so I went with that).
