The first reviews are now available for Treyarch's new WWII shooter, Call of Duty: World at War. Can the Call of Duty franchise break the 'every other game sucks' curse?

IGN (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/929/929174p1.html) - 92%

It's easy to be jaded about World War II shooters, but Treyarch makes a convincing argument to stay excited with World at War. The game is packed with a deep amount of gameplay to appeal to every type of player, from those who want to experience a gritty single-player campaign to those who like to play with their friends to those who just like to play multiplayer. This is a solid, confident shooter with plenty to offer the casual and hardcore alike.
TeamXbox (http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1619/Call-of-Duty-World-At-War/p1/) - 92%

Call of Duty: World at War was a surprisingly satisfying experience all around. Developer Treyarch really showed that they could be trusted with the keys to Dad’s car, and made a game that could be compared favorably to anything Infinity Ward has done.
Gamespy (http://xbox360.gamespy.com/xbox-360/call-of-duty-5/928935p1.html) - 90%

Call of Duty: World at War is strikingly similar to CoD4 in many ways, while offering enough variety to recommend it to anyone who might be growing tired of last year's game.
1up (http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3171247&p=4) - 80%

World at War may not represent the best of Call of Duty, but it's far from the worst. The single-player's a solid step forward from Call of Duty 3, and the cooperative multiplayer should give the game some legs...but I just wish competitive multiplayer had grabbed me the way Modern Warfare's did.

I almost picked this up today but opted for Resistance 2. I felt as if my PS3 needed some love with all the games I have been buying for the 360.

Anybody get this yet and have an impression to give?

You gave in and got Resistance 2 after all! I don't blame you, I'm tempted myself, but my wallet is still cowering under my desk afraid to come out because of all the constant abuse it has taken recently.

The single player so far in it is great. I really want to check out the multi-player mode.

You know you want the game. Don't listen to your wallet, it will only make you weep.

I'm really impressed with the single player so far. The online multiplayer plays just like COD 4. Which is a good thing since COD 4 was one of the best multi player games of all time in my opinion.

OK guys, I finished CoD2, halfway through CoD3, just bought CoD4, and I have both Resistances and both Gears, as well as FarCry 2. WHY do I need another WWII shooter? Could someone PLEASE tell me why I would want or need this game? Because it really is beyond me.

Because you are obviously obsessed with First Person Shooters and there will be an empty place in your soul if you don't buy it.

I'll see about getting this from Gamefly to test out before I buy. I'm really tempted to pick it up now, but games are expensive and I would like to buy Christmas presents for someone besides myself...

Single player is pretty short, I managed to get through about 7 levels playing coop with a friend tonight, and I think there are only 4 left.

I only played the MP for about 4 maps, but my gripes so far are 1) There are no particle effects (random leaves or paper flying around) 2) The guns don't feel as good as COD4, which makes sense because it's WW2.

Despite the negative, it was worth buying it, because I know I'm going to do MP with friends for months to come.

I missed the event, but my wife made a valiant effort to save it. She said that she was overcome by smoke while trying to remove it from the VW van.

See the IGN review makes me consider purchasing it, even though I don't particularly like WWII games. The only thing that puts me off is the marketing, the "No Fear" ad was simply disrespectful.

Damn damn damn! Let's see, I have Fallout 3 installed and 20 hours in, Far Cry 2 installed and 2 hours in, Dead Space with 3 hours in, Gears with 1 hour in, and now I'm feeling the pull to pick up both CoDWaW and Resistance 2... The only way to play all of these awesome games would be to get divorced and sell my baby!

I played the beta and picked up the full game Monday afternoon. The beta had plenty of issues which, at least to me, seem to all be fixed now. Competitive co-op is absolutely great and even with 4 players veteran difficulty is extremely hard on some levels. (You could even say adding teammates hurts you since you have to keep everyone alive) The multiplayer maps include the 3 from the beta with no obvious changes, aside from the Roundhouse glitch fix, but I'm enjoying the retail maps far more than the beta maps- a reversal from CoD4.

I'll definitely be getting enjoyment out of the competitive co-op for a number of weeks (challenges! cheats!) and the multiplayer should hold me over for another year just like CoD4. I haven't unlocked the Nazi-zombie survival mode yet so I can't comment, but I imagine it will just add even more value to the title.

Two final notes: first, the exploding headshot cheat is the most hilarious thing I've ever enjoyed in a WWII game, and second, when you shoot people with an mg they actually die like they should- with body parts missing.

You can still get top dollar for that baby while it is young. It might help reduce some of the cost from the divorce.

Just my two cents!

I decided to pick it up on the PC for the single player. I have no interest in the multiplayer for this game as I'd rather fire up cod4 or bad company on the 360. So I install it and get a black screen with sound in the background.

A quick google search brings up tons of people with the same problem. I'll wait until that's fixed.

Heheh... actually its one of my least favorite genres, I'm just an obsessed game collector in general. :p

what is this cheat you speak of? have a link?

I picked up the game yesterday at bestbuy with a GC.. first game ive bought retail in probably 10 months. Not dissapointed so far.. im a cod4 fan and this is refreshing yet familiar. the asylum map is great.

cant wait to try co-op.. nice that there is split screen multiplayer. I wonder if thats online as well.. i hate that no games (cod4 included) force you to do split screen local.. i mean who wants to play 4 player DM..

I'm impressed by the first reviews of CoD5. Didn't really think it had a good chance of being a good game. I may have to add this to the ever growing wishlist :D

It's not COD5... but yeah, it still plays well.

If you host a co-op game you'll notice that you have an option to turn on cheats. These are very similar to the Halo3 skulls, in fact, you have to find the "Death Cards" in each map before the cheat is unlocked for use, just like the Halo3 skull system. In my first play through I found 3 of them, without knowing where they were or even what they looked like before going in.

From what I can tell, turning them on does not prohibit you from achieving any of the competitive co-op challenges, though they might make it more difficult.

You can also read what these cheats are while hosting or joining a competitive co-op game by checking out the Death Cards section under the Barracks. Here you can read what all the cheats do, which level to find them in (1 per level I believe), and which you have unlocked. In co-op it doesn't matter who picks up the card, all players unlock the cheat.
