For those of you who do not buy games on their release date and are still trying to see where your money should go, here is a collection of some of the more popular releases for the past week in the order of their overall scores. The scores and quotes are provided by Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/games/).
Gears of War 2 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ZK9QD2?ie=UTF8&tag=evilavatarcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000ZK9QD2) (360) - 93%
While it's certainly open to debate, we're going to go out on a limb and call Gears of War 2 the most visually impressive game of all-time.
As great as the campaign is, the game will see its longest legs from multiplayer. And from the multitude of competitive match types to the addictive and strategic co-op Horde mode, what felt like a hugely entertaining afterthought in the original Gears now easily stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the campaign.
Exceeding already lofty expectations, Gears of War 2 raises the bar a notch for action games this holiday season, and that is no small feat. If you don’t have an Xbox 360 yet, Gears of War 2 is as good a reason as any to compose a short letter to Santa.
Resistance 2 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012N3T3Y?ie=UTF8&tag=evilavatarcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0012N3T3Y) (PS3) - 89%
Resistance 2 is a major improvement over the original in every way. It is an awesome experience of seeing a team of developers at the top of their game and pulling out all the stops.
The single player is epic in scope and in story, which is practically worth the price of admission by itself. Then you throw in the extremely engaging co-op and competitive play, which expands on replayability in just about every way possible.
For multiplayer fans, Resistance 2 delivers everything you could want from a game, but the single-player experience sadly falls short of expectations.
Tom Clancy's Endwar (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000X25GX6?ie=UTF8&tag=evilavatarcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000X25GX6) - 79%
EndWar offers something new, refreshing, and a little exciting for console players. It's sort of a coming of age when what could be seen as the last stalwart of the PC -- the RTS -- is made from the ground up with every classic convention put on the chopping block to please the couch player.
At its core, EndWar is a bit too simple, but it does offer a unique voice command system and terrific production values.
The voice command system in EndWar is terrific, and hopefully, future games will take advantage of a similar control scheme. It just isn't enough by itself to raise the game beyond "mediocre RTS."
James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AWIOYG?ie=UTF8&tag=evilavatarcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001AWIOYG) (360, PS3, Wii, PC, DS) - 69%
If you’re looking for a game to reveal the plot of Quantum of Solace before the movie’s release, this is not it. If you’re looking for the answer to GoldenEye, this is not it. Instead Quantum of Solace is a respectable shooter with little that sets it apart from the rest of the field.
GoldenEye's heyday is long gone, and Solace relies too much on nostalgia and imitation to be anything close to the next shooter milestone.
Quantum of Solace never manages to be a Bond game: at the tiniest of nudges, it panics and starts unleashing gunfire. It's clumsy, it's messy, it's not much fun and most of the time, it's not even the right film.
Thanks, modeps!
