Sad turn of events today. Brandon Crisp, the gamer that ran away from home three weeks ago because his parents took away his 360 has turned up dead. GamePolitics (http://www.gamepolitics.com/2008/11/05/missing-gamer-found-dead) has the story:

Police have found the body of missing Barrie-area boy Brandon Crisp... He was found on Fifth Line in the Barrie area...

A massive search was underway for the teen in Shanty Bay on the Oro Medonte Rail Trail, just outside of Barrie, since his disappearance on Thanksgiving Day.

Last week, a second witness confirmed seeing Crisp on the trail the night he disappeared.

Our indication is, at this time, no foul play suspected, but of course we have to examine every possibility... There's absolutely no fear for any residents of Oro-Medonte. This is a safe community.

My thoughts to the Crisp family. RIP.

what does "found on Fifth Line" mean?

I live in the area. Fifth line is a street that people tend to use to get from urban to rural areas, or vice-versa.

Too dumb to live.

Maybe he deserves to be on a Darwin Award or something. But try to put it nicely, at least, we don't even know what happened yet.

And my thoughts to his family as well.

"we don't even know what happened yet"

We do know what happened though. He threw a hissy fit because his parents took away his Xbox. His solution to the problem was to run away from home. Shit went wrong somewhere, he died. Possessing half a brain, he wouldn't have left home in the first place. Hell, being at least a borderline useful member of the species, he would've lasted longer than 3 weeks on his own.

You know what's awesome. I hope that when you fuck up someone is right there to make sure you get a kick in the face. because honestly you really do deserve what's coming to you. Remember this moment. I said it.

Here is the answer you seek!

Sucks for this family. Quite the ridiculous scenario. It must be balls ass cold up there at night though, no surprise he didn't make it when he didn't come back home within a day or two.

Actually it hasn't been too bad. It's only snowed once and that was back in mid to late october. If he's from barrie though that's a bit farther north and much more colder than here in toronto. :)

The boy was 15. Here in these parts, we call 15 year olds children. Children do, wait for it, childish things. That doesn't mean they deserve to die.

People who are oh-so-bravely hard-asses on the anonymous internet on the other hand...

Maybe it was more than his favorite toy; maybe getting a 360 really was the best thing that ever happened to him. Maybe his parents fucked up their parenting so consistently that their taking away his game console was akin to shattering his identity / hope for the future.

It feels good to think otherwise, but—as with any luxury—having nice technology isn't necessarily concomitant with having a good parent/child relationship.

Too dumb to live.

As soon as I read the news post on the main page, I knew this would be one of the first responses.

While you're acting like an internet badass, this kid's parents are probably dwelling on the fact that they feel like they killed their own child. I can only imagine the sheer amount of guilt and loss they would be experiencing right now.

But, hey...at least you got to impress one or two people on the internet. That's worth something.

I am of two minds on this. On one side, I have no pity for the kid who got himself killed. It was a dumb move to run away from home, and he ended up getting in over his head, as should be expected. These kinds of things never turn out well. He may be considered a child by law, but the fact is that he was old enough to know better.

One the other side, I feel terrible about the kid's parents. As Chimpbot said, they must be going through a massive amount of grief over this. Something I read once said that the most horrible thing for a parent is to have their child die before them. I have a few friends who have kids, and they agree with that 100%.

I read another article today that said that the kid's father saw him packing up a backpack while threatening to run away, and the dad told him "better pack warm things" trying to call his bluff. Wow. Imagine how that dad is feeling now that the kid probably froze and starved to death.

Really sad story. I feel real bad for the parents, can only imagine the guilt they will have. I hope they dont blame themselves but from the interviews that I've seen it looks as though the father feels its his fault.

People suck as you can see by some of these comments..we still have no idea why this kid really left or what else was happening at his home. Also did he get taken advantage of by another adult that he played online with? That there is no foul play noticed doesn't mean there wasn't foul play. Some of you need to grow the fuck up.

I can always count on message boards to consistently shatter my faith in humanity. We have no idea what actually happened (suicide?) or the details of this kid's life. The easy headline is he ran away because his toy was taken away, but did anyone think for a moment that there was something far more serious going on in this kid's life/mind and having the console taken away was just a symptom of a far more serious problem (depression/abuse/etc)?

Very tragic for all involved. I hope when some of the idiots in this thread are met with adversity, society treats them just as callously.

Man... that just plain sucks.

What a terrible thing to have happen to him and his family. Yeah he could have reacted better about the situation but nobody deserves something like this for just being an adolescent kid...

I remember many times being upset w/ my family when I was growing up and leaving the house. I had changed states about every 2 years... More when I was in high school... 5 high schools - 4 states - 3 years.

I eventually came to terms w/ the whole constantly moving thing when I was about 20ish. Wish this kid had the time to come to terms w/ his problems too.

Im a parent of an 11 and 8 year old (both girls - both gamers so far! <3); I don't know what I would do if something like this were to happen.

The last story that really made me think a lot was when James Kim was lost to his family... don't know why that comes to mind, but damn... you shouldn't have to pay for being young and making mistakes w/ your life.

/prayers and thoughts for the family

Yeah I live in Toronto (Scarborough) and it has been unseasonably warm recently. But that just means the nights are a lil colder as your body gets acclimated to the nice warm day.

There have been comments/tales popping up on boards again about how this could be some xbox online related conspiracy where this kid was lured to his death. That being said, its very probable that this unfortunate kid died of hypothermia. They found his body, clothed and in good condition, hidden in tall reeds. At this point, police believe that he became lost and disoriented and succumbed to hypothermia.

For all the people saying snarky and rude things about this: we were all young once and we did a lot of stupid things. Most of us didn't have to pay the price as usually a combination of luck and the general protection that society creates saves us. Sometimes though, our systems fail and these deaths are unavoidable. I am not defending this kid, living in Canada its not the brightest thing to wander off as winter approaches. However, I do understand that emotions can run hot, and a night out without proper clothing can sometimes spell death or serious hypothermia. These things happen and its sad. There is no need to say clever things for a cheap laugh at someone's grief.

Karma, my friend, is a total bitch..

Actually, you remind me of this quote:

Destiny is a fickle bitch, John.

Was it this kid's destiny to be the worst horror story for all parents around North America? Have kids gotten spoiled so rotten these days that they would rather die than do without the luxury of a 360? If we are to assign blame, who gets the lionshare: Microsoft, the parents, the kid, or dipshitjames??

The world may never know.
