The BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk) is reporting that recent estimates predict that revenue from videogames will surpass that of music and video for the first time.

UK sales of games will outstrip music and video for the first time in 2008, says a report from Verdict Research.

A huge shift in consumer attitudes has turned video games into the UK's most popular form of entertainment, say the retail analysts.

It predicts spending on games will rise by 42% to £4.64bn in 2008, with sales on music and video at £4.46bn.

The full article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7709298.stm)goes on to assess the affect of online sales, the spread of gaming among the masses and whether or not it's right to include sales of consoles in the figures.

Thats only because not everyone has learned how to get piarate games yet.
If games were as easy to get as music then the sales would drop.

Most of this style survey has some horrific flaw in it to give figures a slant. In this case including hardware. While there is merit (since retailer X will sell consoles, but not usually music equipment) it's not really a fair comparison.

That and of course that even with the dirty rotten pirates(tm) stealing everything, the music industry hasn't decreased, it's stayed fairly static (infact with online included it's grown).

Also country specific information is largely losing relevance, since online sales are discounted. And obviously import/export data is seldom maintained.
