In anticipation of the release of "The Movies" tomorrow, Lionhead has opened up The Movies Online (http://movies.lionhead.com/). Visitors to the site can watch and review movies made and uploaded by other players. While players have not yet gotten their hands on this yet to be released game, there are a few entries already available that were made presumably by Lionhead developers.
Users are encouraged to use the site to upload movies, as doing so can earn credits towards additional downloadable content that can be purchased in the game's prop shop. However, the prop shop remains "Coming Soon", so no details can be found yet on what may be won by creating a film masterpeice.
This is The Movies' Community Site. It's where you can view, and review movies created and uploaded from The Movies™ game. Uploaded movies can enter the latest fantastic competition, you can see what New Props have been created and discover who's saying what in The Forums. And you can find out what the Movies Friends have been up to. It's all here! Any questions?
Just checked this out, and while the current crop of movies are less than amazing, they definitely show that there is going to be fun to be had with this title. Now, if I could just warp two days into the future to get my hands on a copy of the game right now.

So the question on everyone's mind right now is.......
DID they actually implement lip movement before the game went gold?!
I hope so. ;)

You think so? I thought it gave me a lot of information quickly and looked fine. You have to keep in mind that it self-updates so all those little windows need to move easily. Not a web designer, but it didn't strike me as half-assed.
Know of any other games that let users download and upload movies they make in the game? It served this purpose very well.

They have said yes on the Lionhead forums before. There are other videos out that show lips moving in sync with the words (and not looking retarded sort of half doing it with only the mouth "piece" moving). That is, if they aren't simply synching the voice with animations.
It will be super disappointing if the finished lip-synching is that bad.

How long does the shipping take? I'm on to you!
Thenetcase - Yeah, you should be seeing those tomorrow after people who live in distribution cities get the game and start uploading. I expect they'll suck pretty hard given that they will be people's first efforts, but we'll be able to gauge the technology.

Yeah it'll probably be less than stellar. Hopefully it's good enough to give people a real creative license once they get "Good" at making the stuff though.

Will you be the next Uwe Boll?
I guess I haven't been following this game enough. You can actually watch the movies you create? How does that work?

I really want to get my mits on this game. The couple of movies I have seen done in it from past previews, and the couple I watched from this site make me want to sit down and just play. Do you have to worry about budget? Or is it just a big sandbox? Do you have length limitations? How much control do you have over the look of not only the sets, but say.. what film stock you use, lenses even? I have seen little of that covered, and the impression I have is that you play it out in something of a career mode.
Not sure, and it really does not matter as I will not get the chance to mess with this one until it hits Xbox.. if it hits Xbox.

There is a really good video walk through for download here (http://www.lionhead.com/themovies/news/216) and if you want to read and not watch, there is a FAQ.
Basically, you run a movie studio (like a sim/strategy game), keep your stars happy and make them more famous (sort of like "The Sims), and make movies (sort of like. . . well brand fucking new. :) ). You can have script writers make the movies or "write" your own with the Advanced Movie Maker. You then play out making the movie, where you can adjust props, costumes, effects, place extras, give direction on acting, change the camera angle (from various fixed angles), etc. Then later in post production, you can add voice with a microphone (or type in subtitles), cut and edit, etc. Finally, you publish your film and get in-game feedback from the AI to grow your studio, raise your star's star power, etc. Also, you can publish the films online to the above site for credits that can be used to unlock additional content in the propshop.
Watch the video if you have time, it is excellent. A dev walks you through the game. Very fun, and I'm missing a lot of things in my breif synopsis.

My 30th birthday is tomorrow, and my mom already preordered it (from Amazon which means I might not see it until next week). But let me tell you, I've always been and always will be a movie freak.
I can't wait. Even if it's not perfect, the concept is brilliant.

Everything Lionhead does is half-assed. I'm not expecting much from The Movies, and am waiting for reviews.
B&W 1
Fable
B&W 2
All pretty much unfinished or half of a game, or buggy as hell...or all of the above depending on your experience.
Their ideas are fantastic, mind you, but without the ability to bring these ideas to market with reasonable quality, that means jack shit to me.
Thank you for that innovative and refreshing point of view. Such pearls of thought truly breath new life into any thread involving Lionhead.

Whoah, hold on, it looks like someone made a half-innovative game. Since this isn't a GTA meets anything, I'm going to make sure I don't buy it. Maybe I'll pirate it, just to spite the dicks!
