Take-Two sends along a Press Release announcing that they have acquired game developer Firaxis Games.

Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. today announced the acquisition of Firaxis Games, one of the world’s premier game development studios. Firaxis Games joins the 2K Games publishing label of Take-Two Interactive.

Firaxis Games, home of industry icon Sid Meier, is known for developing award-winning, top-rated games with mass consumer appeal. Their popular gaming franchises include Sid Meier’s Pirates! and the blockbuster Civilization franchise. Hmm, don't know how I feel about this... probably not a good thing.

Good move for Take Two.

Wether this serves the interests of gamers is another matter.

Coming soon: Grand Theft Alpha: Centauri.

I would like to see another Alpha Centauri game actually....

I hope that Take-Two will take a hands-off approach and just let Firaxis make good games. I pray to whatever god that may be listening that they don't take a EA approach and just absorb the best licenses and personnel and sell/lay-off the rest.

Considering that the copyright protection on Civ IV was far, far superior to the copyright protection of Pirates! (Annoying place to hide a key) and was overall easier to install than most games i've installed in years.

Read: None, not even a CD key.

This doesn't really sound like that bad of a deal, i hope they allow the guy free reign, its a privilege to be able to publish his games, and I doubt that Firaxis is stupid.

I don't think they'll screw with the Civ formula, which is all I care about.

Another independent developer bites the dust.

I suppose there are worse publishers to sell out too, but still, I'm saddened everytime I see a small company that I love buckle under the pressures of capitalism.

Yeah, I'm a tiny bit annoyed, but y'know, I'd cry if it was EA or something.

Me too, and all of my friends. We talk often about how awsome a new Alpha Centauri game would be. That and Starcraft 2.

That and Starcraft 2.
Totally off topic, but would it have been that hard to make Starcraft 2 using the Warcraft 3 engine?

So, using the same logic, couldn't they take all that work on Civ 4 and just change all the content to focus on a futuristic world for Alpha Centauri 2? Potentially great game there...

I love Alpha Centuri, I still actually play it lots. Nothing just quite created the same kick ass atmosphere, the story and universe was just amazing.

I too play Alpha Centuari: the voice acting, cut scenes and story are second to none. Great, ageless game on all accounts.

It boots without a CD too ;p

Sid mentioned something about working on another Alpha Centauri in an interview on WAMU Radio's Kojo Nnamdi Show. You can listen to the interview here (http://www.wamu.org/programs/kn/05/10/25.php). I don't know what point it's at, but the interview itself is not an unpleasant way to pass some time. Sid even mentions (very briefly) how he feels about the whole "won't someone think of the children" boondoggle going on, if you care about that kind of thing.

Thanks to the super duper effort by Quicksilver Software, we won't be seeing another MoO game for at least a decade! They did it so well, who feels a need to top their effort?

Maybe Firaxis could make spiritual succesor to Moo, but make it kind of like CIV with more of sci-fi feel: maybe call it Alpha Centauri :D

I actually have screenshots from that new Alpha Centauri game by Sid! Sony was getting all uber cool with their nifty screenshots from the PS3 so I just had to make some of my own for something impressive too... ;)

Firaxis Games joins the 2K Games publishing label of Take-Two Interactive.

When exactly did this happen? I'm just wondering because my copy of Civ 4 has an intro splash screen that clearly says 2K Games on it. Or was 2K Games absorbed by Take-Two, bringing Firaxis with it?

If it means that they'll be able to market games live Civ 4 more widely, that's fine. Just so long as they don't make Grand Theft Civilization :)

2K's been publishing Firaxis' titles for a little while now, they just didn't own the company until now.

What's wrong with Take-Two?

I didn't think they were a nefarious publishing house worthy of fear/anger... maybe I'm just out of the loop!

Not a big surprise, but I like 2k. I feel its like the ying to EA's Yang. I feel they are good, and actually make good games consitantly. Unlike the Evil Alliance that is EA. They also pay their employees, which is a plus!

Erm, didn't Atari publish Civ III and Pirates? I thought Civ IV was their first publishing deal actually.

Anyways, I guess Take-Two think they're worth investing in. Which can (Hopefully) only be good for their future projects.

I like Take2s games, but I do hope they don´t take the EA road though. Love rockstars games and their sportlineup, and I think there have to be a few more publishers who can take on EAs world domination plans.

Where is all of this love for Take 2 coming from?

And the best thing they could do with Firaxis is to drop the top brass and wife (no, Sid is NOT the head cheese at Firaxis) like a bad habit.

I think the love is borne from the fear that EA could of been the one.

What exactly was the difference from a practical standpoint to the average gamer?

Yes, there was a useless CD key, but after that, it's identical. On Pirates, I have to put the bloody disk in the drive to play. Same thing with Civ 4.

I *hate* that.
