Team Xbox (http://www.teamxbox.com) has posted a small article on Popular Science magazine naming the Xbox 360 the Top Tech Home Entertainment Innovation of 2005 (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/9694/Popular-Science-Names-Xbox-360-Top-Tech-Home-Entertainment-Innovation-of-2005/).
Leading off each category is one Grand Award winner -- a product or technology that represents a significant leap over existing technologies. "The Best of What's New awards honor innovations that affect the way we live today and change the way we think about the future," says Mark Jannot, editor of Popular Science.
Winning the Home Entertainment category is the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.
This most likely means little to your average gamer, but it's a feather in Microsoft's cap - that's for sure.

Lets be accurate here - it was not named the "Top Tech Innovation," it was named the "Top Tech Home Entertainment Innovation" which is a way more specific category. If it was the top tech innovation for the year, it would've been a very slow year for technology. That being said - what else was really released in terms of home entertainment that was genuinely new? For that matter, I still hate something winning awards when no one has really gotten to use the damn thing yet.

Thanks for catching that. I changed the post where necessary.
And yet another reason why magazines are out of touch with reality. Don't you have to actually be in consumer's hands before you can call it a top innovation of any category? Besides which, what part about the 360 is the innovative part? The better specs?

And the PlayStation 3 may very well win it next year.
Anyone not excited about both these consoles is a fool. As for the Revolution... once I see some actual games making great use of the controller's unique capabilities, I'll get excited for it too.

I seriously doubt there's anything "innovative" the PS3 is going to deliver. It's just a cranked up PS2. Let's get in touch with reality here, the Rev will most likely end up deserving that, hands down. Whether you like the system or not.

It's promo line could be: "Just like the XBOX360 but .0001% better in some games! (but came out 6 months later!)"
I could see the Revolution winning before the PS3 because at least it's kinda different than the 360...

Umm...just how excited is one required to be? I think it's great when new stuff comes out. But let's be realistic - not everyone here is going to buy one or both. Many will, but man...there's plenty of other things to do.

Does the PS3 deserve this award? Probably not. Is the Xbox 360 going to "affect the way we live today" and "change the way we think about the future" according to the guys who came up with this? Probably not so much either.

So what exactly about the 360 is innovative again? The overpriced peripherals? Nope, that's been done before...

It's innovative because it plays HDTV streamed off a Media Centre PC, apparently.
As somebody pointed out, it's been a very slow year for home entertainment innovation. I can't think of a single new, innovative product that was released for the first time this year.

Actually their expansion of Live! is rather impressive. I'd say it's opening up more ways to communicate, interact, and share info between gamers, that's gotta mean something.
Also the new Live! Arcade is shaping up to be an interesting service that's delivering on what Nintendo is only hinting at with their Rev service, a year earlier to boot.
Granted it's a dumb award, but the 360 is definitely offering something new. I can't believe you guys can't see that.

In the last "year" (taking into account, this time last year), there's an easy one, it's called the DS.
This thread is misleading and should be changed.

I'm guessing it means 2005, not 'the last twelve months'.
They may be jumping the gun.
Also, the DS may or may not be considered 'home entertainment' - I know 95% of my playing time on it is outside the home.

Great, and the thing isnt even out yet. I love hype. It seems to get so thick that I could wipe my ass with it.
To Time: WTF?
To Popular Science: WTF?
Hehe I love when prizes are given to hardware that's not been released. Says a lot.
About who's paying for it at least.
Well, in the articles defense, it would be hitting the news stands in December, after the console is in fact out. But the fact that there is a 1-2 month delay between when stories are submitted and when they actually hit the stands leads to this kind of thing.

Yeah, that prize was stolen!
The iDog so deserved that prize.

pfft... y'know what would be a good indicator if something deserves an award for innovation? ANYBODY USEING IT. I mean why not just host the emmys for movies that aren't released? And give the nobel prise to scientists for the descoveries they might make next year?
This is dumb, products need to stand the test of time before they can be properly judged, for all we know the XBox 360 is going to cause the internet to crash down around us and then explode from improper wireing. I'm getting REALLY sick of people calling their advertizements awards.

I'm much more interested in what Nintendo is going to offer over the Virtual Console. Downloadable NES, SNES, and N64 classics like Mario RPG, Ocarina of Time, Super Metroid, etc. are way more exciting than playing another version of Space Invaders for the ten millionth time. The sorta-indy stuff that may hit the Arcade is interesting though. As long as it doesn't result in twelve different versions of Space Invaders.
But this one has you shooting at penguins! PENGUINS!!!
