View Full Version : A Woman's Reason to Game

Girls make up something like 43% of the gaming population - not all that rare - but every time a girl's name appears in an article about games, people take notice. One of the most popular articles on GameTab (http://www.gametab.com/) recently was The Escapist's articles on girls in gaming (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue/17/27), which would arguably not be as notable without the cute girl on the cover.

There's an article up at GamesFirst (http://www.gamesfirst.com/) called, "A Peak Behind Alice: A Woman's Reasons for Gaming (http://www.gamesfirst.com/?id=958)," which is a character profile of a woman gamer and why she plays games. It's a glimpse at a gamer that's probably more representative of the average than we typically think.

Why do girls game?

Well, it's certainly not because it's a place to meet guys. I've seen some of my gaming brethren and man, I don't want to imagine the bad breath alone.

It's a pretty big stretch to say that girls don't exist on the web.

Her sn's not Lady Yunalesca is it? I've seen the vids - she plays a mean game of COD.

Girls are getting more and more recognition in gaming. This is odd timing, I just did an interview today with AthenaTwin, one of the leaders of PMS Clan. Should be up towards the end of the week here.

And it's not attention whoring, its a major change that is begining to occur in our industry.

Girls may exist in games, but someone should explain to her something about web development. If you have a slightly larger minimum text size (like I do for my 1680x1050 display), some of the text on her pages overflow right off their background images.

I'm talking about what happened during my conversation with a leader of the biggest female clan in gaming.

I'm talking about the fact it's more socially acceptable for girls to game and to be good at it.

I'm talking about the fact the gaming is mainstream, gamers aren't necessarily geeks, and gaming is now deemed cool.

Yes, girls play videogames. I got my g/f addicted to wow. She's probably a better hunter/warlock than i am.

What else is new? Most of the guys that i know now have introduced videogames to their g/f's...and suprise, suprise, there's something in there for everyone! who knew...

The whole argument, sarcastic or serious, has always been annoying... I know tons of girls who are gamers. The only difference I would say is that they tend to be console oriented more or less.

Also I cant wait to be old. Instead of bingo well be having fps tournies.

Pretty sure it is.

I too know female gamers, one in the industry and quite hardcore across all the systems/genres from PC to Xbox to PSP to PDA. Nothing new, really. Heck, there's probably many more "girl gamers" in the general population of online players that simply won't admit to it. My guess from the ones I know is fear of the online idiots pestering them and/or the so called social stigma that male geeks simply don't care about. (real or imagined)

That, or they're just not interested in attention whoring.

I just got my g/f into playing F.E.A.R, and she grew up on nes, snes, commodore 64 etc. I don't think it's all that new a revelation.
But the fragdolls thing I think is a tad insidious. Just because girls have tits'n'ass doesnt mean it should be used as a marketing or popularity ploy, which is what it plainly appears to be.
"OMG check out these XXXtreme gaming grrrls they are so hot"
It's a shame there isn't a fat pasty chick amongst them to truly represent the broader gamer base. It will just make the regular girl feel more aliented online and offline.

Girls have always played games. It's nothing new. I started playing games with girls back in the mid 70's on the Odyssey and Pong.

I don't think the change in culture has that much to do with girls playing video games. I think it has more to do with online play giving guys who would normally never have contact with girls access to them. ;)

I agree with this.

I think that gaming is just more acceptable than it has ever been before. Sure there have always been some girl gamers, but what is new is that they are not as prone to hide the fact anymore. Suddenly it's "ok" for girls to play games. So I think we are all going to hear more about it as it enters the mainstream.

I need to find a beautiful girl that plays games...and I don't mean Mario every so often. I need a hardcore girl that would pass up having sex with me if it meant playing Civ 4 or Oblivion all night. I'd like a girl who enjoys Anime, fantasy and sci-fi novels, but one I can take out in public without worrying that she might frighten small children. However, I'd like a girl who also enjoys sports, dressing up, going out, and tossing a few back.

Do such girls exist? I have a wide variety of tastes, but it seems I am always attracted to the girls who are not interested in anything I am, and I have to hide my "geek" hobbies. I'm superficial and shallow, perhaps. Maybe that's why I cant find a woman exactly like that.

I think the reason this issue keeps coming up is because gamer guys are trying to reassure themselves that there's a girl out there that's "just like them." Except that in their heads they want these girls to look just like Kasumi or Lara or any of the cute/hot/big-breasted/over-underaged characters in the games they play. This dream ultimately gets shattered when they attend a gaming convention and see fat chicks doing cosplay.

There was an ad that used to run on some game site or other (1up?) that said "Find Gamers near YOU!" and consisted of head shots of all these stunning looking women and one dorky guy.

The problem with a lot of this "Girls game too!" tomfoolery is that for the most part, it seems they seem less interested in flaunting the fact that it's a rising demographic, and more HOLY SHIT! THIS VAGINA HAS A CONTROLLER ATTATCHED!

It's hard, huh? Really, stop hiding your hobbies and don't worry about it. If she's interested, show her the best of what's available, but don't push it. Do you really want someone with exactly the same interests, though?

A hardcore, drinking, sports watching female gamer is probably hard to find unless she's a total tomboy, in which case I'd give her lesbian tendencies. (Let's all take a moment to appreciate this mental image...)

...but an anime watching, game playing, occasional sports fan isn't that hard to find. Trouble is, the ones you find are always on the other side of the country/world. Probably just easier to find a girl who doesn't totally hate the idea, and try to warm her up to it with some addictive titles. Find a girl who's willing to take interest in and share your interests, and repay the favor by doing whatever activities she likes.

There might be a little attention whoring, but there's also some attempts at being informational. I mean, think about it. How many games do YOU play online that you hear a female voice even 1/3rd of the time? And when you do, the other guys in the dame game immediately go to the A/S/L questions and gender based harrasment (and I don't mean calling someone a bitch, because I do that all the time. ;-) ).

Hell, I even stopped playing one of my female characters in EQ because of how bloody creepy some guys would get. (Although on the flipside, I did get one badass armor set when I first started for free. lol).

Just the fact that a topic like this has THIS many replies shows that the split and differences in the way people think on the topic still exsit. Once people actually DO stop caring, then no one will be "attention whoring" and you won't have to worry about these topics anymore =P

AaronGF
11-06-2005, 07:39 PM
I agree, knite. Most of these posts seem to be about how girls stand up and seek attention, but if that's the case, shouldn't there be more girls here seeking attention? How many of the posts on this forum are from girls? While 40% of gamers online are girls, but how often do you run into them? Rare enough that you probably remember, don't you? Girls are reading these comments right now, right here - I guarantee it - but not posting. Why?

The fact is, girls don't have representation in the game industry equal to how many of them there are. To even write an article about a female gamer means that there will be 43 posts with words that are not exactly respectful of females, in the slightest. If a girl writes a response to this posting saying, "I'm a girl, and here are my thoughts," the majority of posts responding to her would probably be less than respectful.

Girls and guys do play different games, they do have different preferences. Check the ESA surveys and they tell you the exact numbers. Why is it that we assume that any girl gamer that you've heard about is attention grubbing?

No wonder the people posting about whether or not these girls exist can't find any. We do a fine job of fragging them publicly the instant they show their face.

Fragdolls are a corporate made girl clan.

Girls are getting more and more recognition in gaming. This is odd timing, I just did an interview today with AthenaTwin, one of the leaders of PMS Clan. Should be up towards the end of the week here.

And it's not attention whoring, its a major change that is begining to occur in our industry.

You see, I've got to disagree with it being a "major change". Because, as far back as I can remember, I've seen lots of girls play video games. Though I did notice that during the later half of the 90s, the impression changed that this wasn't quite the case (due to the rise of playstation gamers and their T+A and shoot'em up games, so the marketing went after that, easy sales), and now that the 15-25 male market is stretched thin, the game industry is reaching out trying to focus on other market segments (which again, isn't to say girls haven't been playing games this whole time, just the mainstream marketing is realizing this and starting to reposition itself for better sales growth).

But yeah, personally, I'm a little bit tired of the girls in gaming "issue". Not so much as I am with the whole violence in video games one, but I'm sure a year from now I'll be on the "ok, we get it already" fence.

Now, with relation to this article, I thought it was well done. Though speaking from the other "side", I know that personally much of the disbelief stems from the jealousy (whether real or simply preceived) that if say you are a girl, everyone will cut you slack and give you extra help in said game. I've seen this myself and I don't like it. So it's a fairly straightforward reaction when someone says they're a girl for me to immediately question if this is true or not (though I usually only question this internally, not with the boldface "you're lying" out loud). This is especially seen in MMOs, where the author herself admits that she's seen freebies for simply being known as a girl. By doing so, it is, in many ways just not playing fair. It means I am at a disadvantage in the game simply due to my gender (being a guy). I know it's not being asked for, but that's what happens, regardless.

I won't go further into the psychology of why this all happens, it's just a shame that it does. I wish everyone was able to play by the same rules without interference. Then again, life ain't fair.

As far as girl gamers go, it makes no difference to me. Guy, girl, whatever. I'll still kick your ass. ;)

In all seriousness, I don't think the average female gamer is an attention whore. That is why “Girl Power!” gals like the Frag Dolls spark irritation – at least, for me. And if there is a torrent of woman-bashing whenever we chime in to discussions, the Frag Dolls are not going to help anything. Actually, I tend to be annoyed by the Frag Dolls in the same way that the Spice Girls and Britney Spears tend to rub me the wrong way. They're all probably far more talented at what they do than I am, but talent isn't the focus or why they're well known. Instead, their sex appeal is really the dominant aspect of their fame. In a lot of ways, it's sad to me that the concept of females in gaming still has to be dressed up in sexy ways in order to become mainstream.

Really, the idea of girls that game isn't significant. Girls have had a strong role in gaming for years. The articles (or at least the second one) don't really highlight just girl gamers as much as character profiles of a gamer in general.

The notable element is the reaction people have to the idea of girl gamers, or to rather non-controversial articles about gamers that happen to be female. It's as if our own stereotypes have not yet caught up to our reality; we become feisty whenever the subject is mentioned.

And as for adequate representation on the forums, in order to match the actual guy/girl ratio of online gamers, roughly 40% of the posts on this forum would have to be from girls. I have no way of knowing, really, but I somehow doubt that's the case.

Girl gamers are not a mystery, they're not some mystic concept, but I wonder if something about our gaming culture is suppressive to them. It only takes mentioning your gender on Xbox Live (if you're a girl) a few times before you stop talking during games at all. So I've been told, at least.

..., but I wonder if something about our gaming culture is suppressive to them. ...

Actually, I don't really think it's just the gaming culture. I think our culture in general has a very high male agression, lower female agression mix, and behind the percieved anonymity it allows those agressive males to get even MORE agressive without as much "social pressure" to behave, because of percieved anonymity. Think about it, how many times has an agressive male been called "confident" only for an agressive female to be a "bitch"?

My physical requirements eliminate probably 95%+ of all women anyway (as in none of the girls in frag dolls come close to doing it for me).

As for girls in gaming, I'd say that most of them are console gamers and arent hardcore. Then again most gamers in general arent hardcore.

Honestly, I'm gonna side with him this time, even though he is a complete dumbass. We get it, the realm of gaming is not only for men. Never has been really, I know plenty of girl gamers.

You know why they game? For the SAME FUCKING REASON AS I DO! You know what games they play? THE SAME GOD DAMN GAMES AS I DO! No, they don't just sit around playing Animal Crossing and The Sims all day, they Quake it up as much as anybody. This is just another example of people trying to make genders out to be more than they are. Men and women have way more things in common than they do differences.

Hmm.. My wife plays Sims and Animal Crossing all day.

You're right, we don't want these stupid articles! We want pictures of girls in bathing suits, "gaming".

Pretty much summed up what i had on my mind there. ;)

Girls are getting more and more recognition in gaming. This is odd timing, I just did an interview today with AthenaTwin, one of the leaders of PMS Clan. Should be up towards the end of the week here.

And it's not attention whoring, its a major change that is begining to occur in our industry.

No....its not a fucking change! they've been gaming along with us since the beginning, the fact that we need to cope with here is that there are a lot of lonely male gamers here who just drool when they see the words "doll" or "princess" in somebody's counter-strike nickname.
Get a life moron! (not you...you keep chokin on that goddamn cherry.)

I just read my post and i declare myself drunk.......Sayonara!

Girls like this do exist... i'm friends with one... but I dont think she'd pass up sex for civ 4 or oblivion... sorry. Plus, she's dating someone.

I am married to a game playing, anime loving, sci fi nerd, mmo nerd woman. Its not that strange to me to see a girl who can royally stomp my ass in a FPS or MMO.
I don't need her to stomp my ass in a FPS or MMO. I just want her to stomp my ass. I'm also a kinky fuck and like foreign objects like controllers and other peripherals to be inserted into my body.

Just don't smell them afterwards. Use plenty of soap, bleach and antifungals to clean them, but even then they still might not be sanitary.
