Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net) has all the details (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=61556) on the European re-issue of ICO, considered by many to be one of the most emotive games of this generation.
A re-issue of Sony's seminal PS2 title ICO has finally being given the green light in Europe, it was confirmed today, and is set to be released alongside SCEJ's new 10/10 title, Shadow of the Colossus in February 2006.
The news will come as an immense relief to those who have so far missed out on the title, with prices on ebay routinely fetching over £50. One enterprising London store recently priced the limited version at around £80.
If Sony were to release an ICO/SotC double pack here, I'd be all over it like flies on shit.

They need to release this game on a DVD this time instead of a CD.
ICO, being a CD game, makes my PS2 squeak funny for some reason. There are also reports of a lot of people not being able to play CDs on their aging PS2s at all, especially the gold-colored types of CDs (like the ICO type).
The disk-reading laser on the PS2 is a piece of shit anyway. Did Sony ever resolve this? With the slim PS2 perhaps? With the new Silver slim PS2 that has a new BIOS among other things?

I take it you are referring to the new silver PS2 that only plays some PS2 games?

I bought both Ico and Rez at the same time. The ensuing weeks were a veritable orgasm of sheer brilliance that I fear will never be repeated in my gaming life. Both of those games need to be given a mass run at budget prices. People need to see what gaming can potentially be.

Picking up both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus at the same time would probably make someone orgasm until they died from it.

Unless they are stone-hearted layabouts. I can think of a few.

What was the combat system in Ico? Turn based or real time?

Ico had combat?
heheh
I just spent my time running around in circles clueless as to WTF I was supposed to do next.
Game was damn pretty though. =)

Ico is a clever, high-quality title. Using the analogy of a pile of shit with flies buzzing around it is to describe one's desire for Ico is ironic, as Ico is clearly not analagous to a pile of shit. Ergo, it is ironic to use said analogy.
Heh-heh, I typed "anal" three times. :D <-- Witticism makes this post humorously ironic!

See, that is what makes SotC fun...sometimes you don't have clues as to how to defeat a Colossi, you have to use your Cthulhu-given noggin. However, I never had a problem getting lost in Ico. I think it was pretty straight forward.
And Ico isn't really about combat. Sure, you fight some shadows every so often and try to protect Yorda, but that's not really what the game is about. Fumito Ueda has a knack for creating emotion-driven games. It's uncanny, really. Like falling in love with a novel's characters, you find yourself bonding with Ico or Wanderer/Agro like Elliot and E.T. once did; their ills are your ills. Their glories are yours.

I can live without any of the shitty games on the list of incompatible games if the laser is fixed for good, thank you.

This is awesome. I whole-heartedly applaud releases like this, actual good games with actual good game-play.
However, before someone shells out $60 to $100 for Ico, I think I should point out that there are several brand new, NTSC copies on Ebay for $10. At that price everyone should be all over it like flies over a giant fitbabits dump. ;)

He's one of the few guys Nintendo could really learn from. Admittedly Ocarina laid some of the groundwork for what he did, but it's hard to tell if Nintendo really understood why that game worked so well.

I would be ecstatic if a Ico re-issue sold like hotcakes and made the bestseller charts. I really would.
What could help market this? New cover art, for starters. And replace Yorda with a DoA girl with huge fucking tits and over-used sexual organs that drag on the ground behind her.

Very cool that this game will hopefully be getting a nice second chance, since it deserves it. Also a reminder that I really need to sit down some weekend and finish ICO.

And you call yourself a gamer? ICO can be beaten in an afternoon. Do it. Now.
I'm not kidding. Go.

Son of a bitch. As soon as I finished SotC, I bought Ico new on eBay.

Amen brother. I never realized at the time how significant getting those games on their first days out would be. I figured I was just getting some quaint and different games for my brand-spankin' new PS2 (at the time). Now they're icons.
If they do release Ico over here again my friends will be ticked. They just tracked down a copy of it the other day and had to pay a pretty decent amount for a 3-4 year old used copy.
That said, I agree that they should release Ico on DVD instead of CD. Mine is a blue disc, not gold, but given how flakey some of the PS2's are with reading the non-DVD discs, well, any reissue should be on DVD.

Anyone notice in that article about the re-release that they screwed up? They say "In this hauntingly-beautiful action adventure, you play Yorda, a young boy who must guide mysterious girl to freedom from the confines of an enormous castle-cum-prison."
Yorda's the mysterious girl. Ico's the boy. I still think that The Wanderer is Ico... I really don't care if he's not. In my mind he is.

No spoilers, unless you haven't read the Ico manual or popped the disc into the PS2:
He's not, at least not to me. Wasn't Ico born in a village and sent to the castle in banishment? While it could have been plausible, the beginning of Ico somehow makes that null, IMO.
I wish Ueda would fucking tell us. But no, he leaves it up to us to use our imaginations, to over or under think. He wants us to interpret the two games on our own. Dick.
And thecrazyd, those weren't spoilers. He didn't give anything away, not in the slightest. We COULD spoil SotC for you, like by saying that the Colossi are the Wanderer's father's children, sent from a hole in time/space from a different dimension that mirrors our own, but vastly ahead of us in the future, and the Wanderer decides, after killing his brothers, to exact revenge on the galaxy for fooling him, and boards a spaceship to nowhere, killing the UI that the Ultimates created, AI's which were created by humans, in a story created by Dan Simmons.

I consider the possibility of a full grown man without horns to be a young behorned kid a bit of a spoiler to the surprise ending. I would be upset if I didn't already beat it.

Thanks for defending me in my absence. I didn't think I gave anything away. I just figured that people who have played both games might have seen where I may have drawn some conclusions about whether the Wanderer was Ico.
Of course, if I had said that after beating the 16th colossus you find out that The Wanderer is the father of Ico... well...
Well, that'd be ruining things.

Have you tried Gamefaqs? I haven't played the game in a long time, so I wouldn't be a lick of help.
Somebody help this guy so he doesn't get frustrated and stop playing the game! We need more Icophiles around here. The world needs them.
