Edge Online has interviewed (http://www.edge-online.com/features/microsoft-we-will-prevail) Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, about their current position in the console market. On PS3 offering a better value than Xbox 360 with more built-in goodies and free online:

People first and foremost are buying consoles for the games, and when it comes to games Xbox 360 is the number one platform--most titles, most blockbusters, most exclusives. If you want to play Gears of War 2, Lips or Fable 2, you'll get an Xbox. Then you add the fact that every major third party title this holiday is also coming out on Xbox 360. We are the system with great games, not to mention Xbox Live, Netflix and being half the price of PS3.

We're slowly removing the reasons to buy a PS3. It feels like we're coming to the point where we're really seeing that.An unbiased opinion if I've ever seen one!

Why would Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live be unbiased?

They need to remove the RROD being common to make me want a 360.

There's one key thing they're doing that actually give me, at least, reason enough to own a PS3.

Microsoft is shedding it's in-house developers while Sony is snapping up new ones. MIcrosoft has some cool exclusives like Fable 2 right now...but what will happen after the effects of their purge kick in?
Meanwhile, Sony is trying to nurture and develop new in-house content in order to provide quality exclusives. Microsoft seemingly wants to rely on third-party multiplatform games to fill in the gaps between Halo and Gears of War releases.

Lips a key product? No.

I haven't heard of Sony or MS buying anything right now.

An unbiased opinion if I've ever seen one!

I admit I'm sometimes kind of pissy, but these little comments at the end of stories are really starting to piss me off.

I don't really need someone to tell me that a statement issued by a MS employee concerning MS products might be biased. If that's all the value add that you guys can come up with for a story, then I strongly urge you to exercise your right NOT to add a tag line. At the very least it will reduce the space used on the front page.

You get used to it.

Clearly the major reason for owning a PS3 is still the Blu Ray player. NetFlix is not an effective argument until they start streaming in 1080p.

Gears 2? yeah.

If that's the reason for this story's terrible tagline, they should just change the motto to "with redundancy".

I dont see how anyone would even want Gears 2 after the colossal embarrassment Cliffy Douche has become for Epic. Might as well give Jack Thompson a bj than buy anything endorsed by that gnome or his RROD overlords.

How does Cliffy being an idiot invalidate the quality of the game.

Yeah, seriously.

There's nothing better than having a ticking time bomb for a console.
Mine shits the bed whenever it is needed most. It would make the worst super hero ever.
If it weren't for Fable 2 and Gears 2, I would have possibly taken the loss and sitched everything over to my PS3 (replace the games I like on there).

2 main reasons I bought a ps3 instead of a xbox 360.

1. RROD
2. PS3 makes a really good media hub.

I realize I'm probably not the majority.

360 makes an excellent media. If you run Windows it is so easy to stream to the 360.

The PS3 is nice too, but the 360 supports allt he Windows media, you can plug an iPod in, etc... Seems to be a wash between 360 and PS3 for media hub unless you really want Blu-Ray.

the 360 is a viable game hub as well, I'll agree with the op because it's simply true. Look at the exclusives. Look at the gaming library available where once japanese games were a dominant sony only province now the 360 has the best of both worlds. Final Fantasy? RE? and the jrpgs available are a plethora on the 360 in comparison to the ps3.

The one ultimate differentiating factor is the blu-ray.

LBP got recalled(NOT HAPPY) so it's just a matter of waiting now, perhaps home will be delayed as well.. -_-

sorry. until microsoft adds a blu-ray player, i will always recommend the ps3. they don't mention the exclusives the ps3 has, and when you want to do something besides play games, blu-ray.

but a 360 is a great game console/music player for the house.

I love my x-box, but I like my ps3 too. I think competetion is good for the industry as a whole. Microsoft hasdeep pockets and is becomming a monster in this arena, I don't think playing that card is gonna garner them any respect. Rather they should support the PS3 and show that they have a great product too at a more reasonable price with a larger games library. All this bashishing is crap! Grow up already!

My Windows Media integration works just fine with my PS3, and unless I'm mistaken any Apple product with a USB cord can connect/function with it, too. But you don't even need an external PC in order to have a great media experience unlike the 360 (built in browser, free PSN, able to export media/games to the PSP wirelessly, Blu-Ray, etc.).

Media advantage -- definitely Sony.

I think I need to clear a few things up here.

The headline of this news item could be interpreted, by a certain segment of console gamers, as inflammatory and upsetting. The tagline was added in the interest of fairness.

After all, would it be fair to anger a small group of readers when I could anger most of them? Obviously not! I stand firmly by my work and I am confident that my "Fair and Balanced" journalistic integrity is fully intact.

Then again, I could be full of shit! We report, you decide.

Have a nice day,

That's the sad thing about it. If there's a console only game I absolutely have to play though I will agree, I will get it for the ps3 unless I can get it cheaper for the 360(which you can since it's moddable...not that I would condone anything like that).

Still worried about RRoD? damn i only remember it being a problem with first gen consoles. haven't seen any complaints lately about rrod's. and even after the extended warranty their still replacing the old ones for free. RRoD was blown out of proportion.

Heh, then I feel sorry for anyone asking your advice on which "game console" to purchase. Storage media should not be that important in the overall scheme.

Now I do understand the lure of BR, but many people 1) Don't have HD capable sets 2) Just want to play cool games 3) are happy with downloading HD movies 4) Don't care...

So MS is going to have Blu-Ray and Little Big Planet? Those would be the reasons for which I would be getting a PS3.

I get what he's saying, but he's coming from the wrong angle. They're making the 360 more desirable from a game and service standpoint, but they're not really matching the PS3's bullet points.

wtf is Lips.....

That was my first question, the second one was "what the fuck is this guy smoking?".

if you ask me, and i know you didn't, the only SMART thing to do is to own all 3 systems.

none of the 3 have it ALL right, and none of the 3 (in my eyes) seem to be going out of their way to GET it all right either.

i pick up exclusives for any of the 3 systems as they arise and as i find them of personal interest to warrant a purchase (used or new). the exclusives are infrequent, but they tend to be much better in quality than the typical multiplatform milk jobs that get released constantly.

anything that is multiplatform AND console only AND that i find of merit enough to purchase (mostly used) i will probably pick the PS3 version of.

as an electrical engineer i just feel/see that the ps3 is an extremely solid, thoughtfully designed system with tons of room for growth, unlike the 360 which is just a shitty rush job with better marketing.

anyway, obviously its all a matter of opinion in the end, but quite frankly, i'll just say that the day the 360 buries the ps3 (hypothetically speaking) will be a sorry day for gamers.

If you wouldn't have put the smart ass quote there would have been someone else saying this was a Microsoft press release site or "Hey Emabulator, don't you realize this is coming from a Microsoft guy" comments. Not that you need my permission but just keep doing what you're doing, people need to relax a bit. Maybe other people can post more news using their highly tuned vocabulary and Oxford certified writing skills to counter balance the "zany" posts. :D

I own all three consoles but the 360 definitly gets the most playtime and with the onslaught of games I will buy this fall (Fable 2, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Mirrors Edge, Tomb Raider: Uderworld, Dead Space, Gears of War 2, Spiderman: Web of Shadows, Quantum of Solace, Guitar Hero World Tour) this will not change very soon.
The PS3 is my main movie watching platform though. I own 4 games and over 40 Blu-Rays. And the Wii has been collecting dust since Mario Kart came out and there is nothing big on the horizon that has me interested.

Ditto. My 5 and 9 year old boys have given up on the Wii as well. We keep it around just in case something cool comes out. Of course we're too busy playing Castle Crashers to pay attention to anything else right now.
