Ubisoft has launched a teaser website (http://www.bewaresamfisher.com/uk/) for the previously announced Splinter Cell 4.
The game is said to go deeper in the life of its main character: Sam Fisher. From what is currently on the website Sam Fisher's daughter, Sarah, has been killed and he has been dishonorably discharged from the armed forces.
There is more, but you should check it out for yourself. Enjoy.

props to ubi for trying something different with the premise. I hope this "more personal" story development isnt just setting the scene and we're back to "fighting terrorists by numbers". I'd be very interested in seeing fisher 'go dark' and take the law into his own hands.
the death of his daughter doesnt seem to steeped in international terrorism, maybe this is the trigger that sends him over the edge and in the following weeks we'll get a sniff at a darker fisher who goes bruce wayne and burys himself completely in making the world a safer place.
or he just tries to drink his problems away

I never cared about Sam Fisher the character, he was always a poor man's Solid Snake to me. If the game gets much further into the future, Sam will have to retire, as geriatrics should not be doing gymnastics.
I would settle for playing as a new character, maybe a kinda creepy guy who is all lanky and spiderey, possibly even a bit sadistic and evil. More of a boogey-man. Possibly have the story be about switching off between him and Fisher in a cat-and-mouse game.

If by vigilante you mean rob banks and kill civillians and cops, then yes, this is indeed like Without Remorse.

However, that info wasn't enough for one GA forum member. Dissecting the site, it was discovered that the image files were organized sequentially, and s/he eventually found 20 images and posted links to them. Ubisoft responded quickly by renaming the images and rendering the links useless.
The big ruckus? According to the pictures Ubisoft didn't want people to see, Mr. Fisher became a wanted man for robbing banks and was eventually arrested. The most striking piece of evidence (image 1) shows a poster depicting a bald Sam Fisher with "BEWARE" in large print. While gamers are used to Fisher being somewhat of a lone wolf, this image--complete with Fisher bearing a shaved head--makes it seem as though the agent has indeed gone off the deep end.

I hate it when everybody starts bashing a game just because Penny Arcade said it was bad. Seriously, WW wasn't as good as the original, but it was still a good game. The story may have been a bit iffy but the platforming gameplay was just as good as Sands of Time, which is what made the first one was so good.

And come to think of it, SC had its own charm as well, some of the stuff Sam would say to enemies during interrogations was hilarious, it made Sam, Sam. Now they seem to have gone generic brooding anti-hero.
Guard: [after being taken captive by Sam on the roof of the Displace office] Hey who are you?
Sam Fisher: Pretend I'm Harry Tubman
Guard: Who?
Sam Fisher: I'm an ill-tempered, heavily-armed heating engineer asking about your ventilation system.
Guard: I guess, I guess it's not working properly since the blackout
Sam Fisher: So it shouldn't take much to shut down that big fan if i wanted to.
Guard: I, I don't know why would you want to do that?
Sam Fisher: The adventure, the travel.
Guard: ...Okay

i hope this isnt just a cover story and that everything is in actuality fine but a ruse so fisher can go undercover. I want him going Jack Bauer and breaking every rule in the book to get his man.
I dont think i'd mind playing someone else. The story would no doubt be about fisher anyway, and the purpose of telling the story from someone elses perspective makes the fisher character all that more awesome by raising them to almost legendary status.
MGS2 just cocked it up by making Snake look even more awesome by letting us play as a 13 year old emotional school girl.
I for one hope the new found balls of the SC team arent wasted on a great build up for more join-the-dots storylines.

I have to agree with you, somewhat.
It took me several tries to get into WW. After actually getting past the horrid first 2-3 hours of the game, it actually starts to get more like the original although it still suffers from the horrible music.
The biggest problem with WW is that it feels so forced on its attempt to be all dark and 3xtre3eeeeme. I have no problem with a darker continuation of the story from Sands, but it isn't until you've put a lot of time in with WW that it starts to feel natural.
I'm holding out hopes for the new PoP... not a lot of hope, but maybe it won't be as jarring as the difference between Sands & WW.
Back on topic: Now that I think about it, if you were a member of 3rd Echelon and were tracking down Sam as he goes mental... that would be kind of neat.
The Iron Weasel

I Didn't say I didn't like the gameplay in WW, the gameplay was good, in that respect it surpassed the original. I just hated the atmosphere and the Bad-ittude. I have no problem going darker, but the rediculous butt-rock, and everything else thats just over the top with the extreme thing is just too much.

Read the gamespot stuff, and look at the fisher mug shots, seriously they are taking the game somewhere splinter cell has never gone before, and its nothing anyone ever wanted OR suspected. I've said that I don't like the idea of the game. The gameplay will most likely be splinter cell. I'm just hoping its not a 3rd person shooter this time. The reason i say that is because they turned Rainbow Six, into a fucking RUN AND GUN shooter. So anything is possible.

this isnt going to be the story, you're not gonna be a crook for god's sake. This stuff is probably a precursor to something, like maybe he's setting up his own private war and he needed the money.
Sneaking is going to be old-school again. no night vision, no light sensors, no communications back to HQ, just a guy in the shadows. I for one am excited that its not another carbon copy of the last game just with new 'plot' (if you can call it that).
Fisher's a patriot through and through the liklihood of trying to sell him as a born-again crook is laughable. i wouldnt take whatever's going on here as the final product. there's a long way to go before we get a game on our machines, we've not even seen a single screenshot yet there's people here calling it a write-off already. Perhaps a little faith?

AGREED. I liked Pandora Tomorrow, but it didn't really grab me the way Splinter Cell 1 did. Just about the entire way through Chaos Theory, though, I couldn't stop thinking "Jesus. This is probably one of the best games I've ever played."
Which is why I'm not worried about SC4, as long as it's being developed by Ubi Montreal, and not the studio that did PT(Hong Kong?).

Aye, BUT her death plus the strains of all his years as a secret operative may have tipped him over the edge, wherever and whatever that may be.
I'm sure that it's a catalyst for the plot in some way, shape or form. Sam also has been discharged for some reason or another which means that he likely won't have all the fancy gadgets.... unless it's a Jack Bauer-type situation where NOBODY in charge knows what he's up to as he worms his way into some fancy organization.
Of course this is just wild speculation. Sam could fight martians and Elder Gods from beyond the stars for all I know. Hmm... Splinter Cthulhu...
