Gamecloud has posted an interview (http://www.gamecloud.com/article.php?article_id=2118) with Lionhead's Stephen Hood, talking about the upcoming movie studio sim game, The Movies.

Gamecloud: The heart of the game is making the movies themselves. How hard was it to give the player as much freedom as needed to make the movies that he or she may want to do?

Stephen Hood: It’s only the heart in terms of it being the goal you need to achieve in order to make serious profit. You can, as studio boss, get your writers to create your studios’ masterpieces and let those you’ve hired take the pressure off yourself. Of course, they don’t have the kind of creativity the player will be able to bring to the table which is where Advanced Movie Maker (AMM) comes in. The AMM offers the player the chance to make the kind of film they’ve always wanted to write and direct – it really is enormous fun seeing the fruits of your labor hitting the big screen, being reviewed by the in-game critics and raking in the dollars. The AMM was designed from the ground-up as a tool which is both accessible and powerful for all levels of players and therefore allows them to create simple 1920 black & white movies right through to Hollywood action blockbusters in the year 2000 and beyond.

It wasn’t necessarily a hard task once it was focussed on, it just took a while to refine what we expect will be a great selling point of The Movies. Some people will buy the game solely to make movies using AMM we’re sure!

I can't wait, I'm going to make a sequel to Colossus: the Forbin Project.

Looking forward to this game a lot. :)

Nice interview, but nothing new in it for those who've kept up on the information.

I'm still pretty stoked about this game. It will be interesting to see just how much you can do with it...because I'd probably try to make a movie like Wild Things. ;)

Just don't let Kelegacy get his hands on this game. The depravity of his creations would probably cause a rift to open up and suck in the entire internet.

Is that the one where Kate Winslet is a lesbian and her and the chubby girl cruelly murder the chubby girl's mother? That was one of the most violent and disturbing bits of violence I've ever seen in a movie.

I want to make charming and esoteric movies like Amelie, but it is hard to do "coming of age" movies with no kids. Hopefully we'll get kids in an expansion, and I'm also hoping that they'll change the gameplay so it is not JUST about getting pretty stars that act well, but that using stars that act well and look the part becomes appropriate. I'd like to cast old people and/or fat people when they fit the role. Maybe they'll even introduce a mechanic for "fattening up" a star for a role. How many times have you heard about stars gaining or losing weight for roles.

Anyway, this is sure to be cool, and I hope you can do your movie. . . although I don't see how they'd be able to get a Teen rating if they allow you to brutally beat an innocent old woman to death. It is probably going to be much more tame than that. . . However, I have high hopes that they will make a Mature rated expansion.

If the game is open to modding, expect all sorts of crazy stuff.
