Champions Online is about to begin a closed beta test in November and is currently accepting applications!

From GamingShogun (http://www.gamingshogun.com/Article/2486/Champions_Online_Closed_Beta_Applications.html):
Official Release:
Cryptic Studios™ announced today that players can now sign up for a chance to participate in the first closed beta for Champions Online™, an action massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) slated for release in the spring of 2009. This PC specific beta begins in mid-November 2008 and players sign up by visiting www.champions-online.com/preview_application.

Champions Online gives players the power of total customization for their hero experience while they explore a vast comic book universe. Gamers create their hero’s name, back story, costume, powers and abilities as well as design their own personal nemesis and his or her back story, which will guarantee a truly unique experience.

Champions Online is being developed by Cryptic Studios as a cross-platform project including PC and current gen console systems, and is published by 2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTWO).

While nothing I have seen totally blows me away about the game, I am very interested to see how it plays - especially for free!

Why even release Champions Online when they have City of Heroes and City of Villians? What's different between thoos and Champions Online? Anyone know?

Champions Online is coming to Xbox 360, and based on an actual pen and paper universe.

Because NCSoft owns CoH and CoV and they want their own game? Think of it as a spiritual successor, although it's based off a P&P RPG.

Cel shading and a licensed name, far as I can tell. Every game video I've seen so far looks like the CoH/V gameplay we all loved and then eventually got tired of. Play paper dolls with a fantastic array of costume customization choices until you get a look you like, find bad guy, stand in place, use/shoot powers, repeat until one of you goes down.

Hopefully there's more actual meat to the character creation/power choices than there was in CoH/V, but I haven't seen anything to show off how that's done. All I've seen so far though is the CoH/V Costume creator and gameplay with Cel graphics, so thus far I'm particularly not impressed.

don't know about meat, but the variety in power choice is certainly there. no more set archetypes. you can choose any power you want. the deeper you delve into a power, the more powerful it gets.

I was talking to someone at their booth at PAX, and supposedly you could have a character with all the powers in the game, but you'd be very weak since you spread out all your character points or whatever they're using to build characters.

I use to love to play the Champions PnP game I hope this does well, however.....after getting some hands on time with DC Universe online, all I can say is good luck cryptic. SOE hate aside that game is going to be huge, it has some of the most addictive gameplay I have ever seen in a MMO.
