View Full Version : Star Wars Battlefront II reviews
I'd glad they were able to fix the horrible beta.

I would pick this up if I had a Live sub. But I'm certainly not getting it for PC when there are already mods that do the equivalent.

Reviews of the recently released Star Wars Battlefront II are starting to pop up and are giving the title great praise.
Teamxbox (http://www.teamxbox.com/) gave the game a rating 9 out of 10 (http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox/1038/Star-Wars-Battlefront-II/p1/).
Star Wars Battlefront II is better than the original in almost every way, which says a lot for LucasArts’ and Pandemic’s commitment to their legion of fans.
Gamespy (http://www.gamespy.com/) gave the title a 5 out of 5 star ranking (http://xbox.gamespy.com/xbox/star-wars-battlefront-2/663532p1.html). Actually, scratch that. If you're a Star Wars fan in general, head out to your local game store to get your hands on a copy of Star Wars Battlefront II. LucasArts has added a ton of new features to an already great game, resulting in one of the best Star Wars games ever.
Finally, 1UP (http://1up.com) gave it an 8.4 out of 10 rating. (http://1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3145304&did=1) But even in the new dressings, if you played the first Battlefront, then you've essentially played Battlefront II. Most of the character classes, weapons, and even some of the levels are exactly the same (long time no see, Hoth), so there's definitely a feeling of déjà vu involved. But, since the execution is done so well, a simplified, almost arcade-like shooter that channels the memories of playing with Star Wars toys in your bedroom the recycling is forgivable.
I never played the original but a co-worker who's hard to impress snagged this last night and has been singing the praises of it.

I like the Star Wars universe but not sure if I really want yet another online FPS. I am kind of ready for something different.

Was able to rent Battlefront II last night but only barely dipped into it (had to get my NaNoWriMo word count in -- 2558 words in so far, need to keep up that average before the Xbox 360 gets here); one excellent point I'd like to emphasize is the ability to customize your button maps, whether you're on foot, playing a Jedi, in a ground vehicle, flying, or a turret. This fact alone kicks the game high up on my personal rating scale. It never ceases to amaze me when a console game doesn't allow for custom button mapping.
Graphically it's decent; the animations can get jerky on XBL. I'm looking forward to some more playing time (after my next 2,500 words ;) ).

Anyone else holding off for a Gamespot or IGN review?
The first one was so bad (retarded AI) that I'm reluctant to sink money into this. . . especially as I'll want the PC version and I can't get that from Gamefly.

Holding off for Gamespot here. They're usually "tougher"
I was watching the Ep III DVD last night and the trailer for Battlefront II on the DVD (which also has a demo BTW) said that it's the sequel to the number one selling Star Wars game of all time.
What?!??!

I played the closed beta probably a month ago. I thought it sucked, hard. After one night I was done with it.
I'm surprised it's getting such good reviews. Maybe they pulled it together.

I played a couple hours of this last night in Galactic Conquest mode. My only problem with it is that the AI are brick dumb. But when they’re coming at you 30 at a time that doesn’t matter, it kind of turns into Serious Sam. The rest of the game is great though in my opinion. Good classes, good single player modes, the space flight stuff is pretty cool, and the map layouts get you killing people early and often.

Man quess I'm outta touch played the first one had many issues hooking up. (gayspy?)
I gave this game away since it seemed like no one was gonna patch it or fix the lobby.
Don't care what the reviews are.
I await the Need For Speed MOST WANTED demo. Do soon?
Man, battlefront was a great idea, but they screwed up almost every aspect of the implementtation.
I really didn't expect this to be any better, but these reviews are a pleasent surprise.

Considering that Battlefront still sees more two-player splitscreen action around here than Halo2, I reckon I'll be giving it a try.

for those of you not wanting to play online, the single player is a crapload of fun. interesting story and such, although right now i cant seem to get past the jedi temple level.

Sounds to me like its proper title is "Star Wars Battlefront v2.0 patch."
That being said I will definetly pick this up... didn't buy the original because of all the problems with it. Played it at a friend's house and it was fun. So, if this is the game the original was supposed to be, sign me up!

Like Achilles, I'm going to talk about that fat ass elephant in the room. The AI. It's still not the brightest. But can you imagine this game with all the AI being "good?" The fire fights seem about the same if not bigger than the previous incarnation. That said, there is one part of the campaign that has you fly into your opponents base. You then are to blow the hell out of some crap on the inside. There is a spawn point right there. Most of thte druids will walk past you. Not cause they are totally stupid, but they seemed to be programed with a one track mind of getting in fighter and fly off into space. I would say that's kinda stupid but they still need to feed the space fighting. Basically we say it's stupid but there is about 16 other people on your team that could be getting fired at.
Heros are great. The implementation may leave the none greatest player left out in the cold. Or will it? As the heros can be given randomly, mostly the best player. Their is a sitting to give it to the best player or the worst player. I surmise the worst player would get it because they need the boost in killing power. They can't really aim that great so there is issue with that.
Also everything SEEMS to take more shots to kill. Not totally sure about that, but it doesn't seem as easy to get the kill. Also sniping really makes my point seem valid to me atleast.
LIVE: More fucking ways to play the game online and there are also a "add all" button for the maps. No more one by one setup.

I haven't played the game, but i did want to mention that I like the style of this post. Aggregated reviews w/score and short summary, very nice.

Just played it and I have to confirm that it is the best Star Wars game EVER and for one simple reason. There is a game mode where you get to exterminate gungans and ewoks. 'Nuff said.

Considering how bad the first title was, I never ever considered the idea of buying the second. I still don't.

I had a fun weekend playing the original on the pc... Maybe the second one is better.
I also have to point that the AI in the original movies was very bad too. Those Stormies were pretty bad shots.

Best Star Wars game ever is Tie Fighter. Unless you only play Sega or Nintendo in the 90's, or just getting out from a cave in 2000.

Which is why I am not going to buy this.. Same Game with some added stuff... I know Lucas is greedy, so I think I am going to wait for this to hit the $20 mark. The only thing I see new is the Space ship -Dogfight -> Breech other ship.. (Having not played the game I can not say this is the only new thing to be honest) From the maps I saw being played in the movie snips... Battlefront 1 on roids...

All I had to hear was that that the AI still sucked.
It amazes me when companies use old technology that has been proven really, really bad. Like Everquest II using the mob AI code that was used in SWG. Players were plagued by mobs that stuck in walls and chased for the entire length of a zone, aggro'd through walls, and often did not respawn correctly (usually only plagues quest mobs for some reason).
Why would a company choose to cut and paste something that is broken? Odd.

I haven't seen the AI get stuck on walls. But it's still simplistic. LIke I said very one track "thinking." AI: Run duck behind pillar and shoot. Run to fighter jet and shoot down opposing team. It's basically what we are doing in the most dumb downed level possible.

IGN only gave it a 7. Based on that there's noway this could be more than a rental, especially with Battlefield 2 still going strong.

So the review scores show a tug of war between Opinion A ("Yeah, yeah - Star Wars. Shoot. Split-screen. Cool") and Opinion B ("AI sucks. Been there, done that. It's just a consolified BF2 wannabe in SW cloth").
Although it's amazing to see IGN in Group B.

Thanks for the impressions Xerxes.
I like the first title, for a game I bought at a bargain price. Yeah the AI sucks, but the game is still fun as hell.
