It's debatable whether this is 'news' or not, but a buddy of mine (thanks, Hendo) sent me the following link to the first Xbox 360 television ad.

Wow, that did ad did it. I'm going to the store during lunch and finally putting down a preorder for my x360 jump rope...
Not only did you have an ad that had nothing to do with your product, but in no way shape or form, did you mention what the product does or show its capabilities. This ad gets a rating of '8' in the 'missing the farking point' scale of advertising.

Are they trying to attract "urban" people or something? It would have been nice if, you know, a commercial for a game system had something to do with gaming...
Anyone remember the Dreamcast commercials? Those were a lot better.

I kind of liked that they weren't doing the typical "WOOOOOAAAAHHHHH! LOOK AT THESE AMAZING GRAPHICS! WOOOOOAAAAAAHHHHH! WE ARE TEH AWESOME! WE WILL R0X0RR YOUR S0XX0RZ! W00T!"
It was refreshing. Cause I think everyone knows that footage of games on TV is completely untrustworthy most of the time anyway. They're just trying to hype how cool their system is, and how cool you will be for owning one. I mean, at least they're focused. I can't say it makes me want to buy one, but I wasn't going to anyway.

The point of the ad (as I see it) is to promote the fact that anyone can 'jump in'. I reckon there will be more ads that expand upon the concept of 'anyone can join in'.
I love this ad the same way I love the Transformers-style ad for the Citreon C4.

It's advertising brand identity over product features. That's generally more interesting advertising. I like it. I really like the lo-fi aspect of it. The whole next-gen tech thing kinda begs for some rediculous special effects bonanza, and I'm glad that they aren't going that route.
Anyone ever see any of the old David Lynch PS2 commercials for the European market? Those were some good ads.

It cracks me up that people are so naive that they don't realize that the mere fact that you're taken time out of your day to talk about this commercial means that Microsoft has succeeded.
Whether you liked it or not is irrelevant...the point is you spent time thinking about it.
Cracks me up how silly people can be...best quote in this thread "NOT WORKING". HAHAHA! Worked enough to make you take the time to type something. If it hadnt worked you would never have watched it or have been aware of it.

From the advertisers point of view? Sure, yeah, it worked. From the people who are talking about it? The ones on whom it generally has a negative effect? I'm not sure that you can call that "working" on an individual level.
But this ad didn't piss me off, because I recognize the song (also, the song doesn't suck), and because at least it isn't the testosterone pumped malarky we normally get when advertisers show game footage. Reminds me of Sony Europe's ad campaigns. They always pull in industry awards... not that awards in the advertising field are anything to be proud of.

Technically it's more to do with the fact that it's a frontpage news item here than ***'s marketing. I certainly wouldn't give a rat's ass to talk about ***'s commercials otherwise, having seen them or not (I've not). I'd be more inclined to say EA succeeded...

Assassin, I would imagine that most of the people who were interested downloading the ad are people who are already buying the 360. We are gamers who have an interest in how the industry works and what happens in it beyond just our immediate play experience for whatever reason. I don't think most of the people that downloaded it, are the type of passive consumer that would just let the ad work its subconscious magic. They are, more likely, the type to analyze and debate its effectiveness as a piece of marketing.
Ultimatley by expressing an interest at all, perhaps MS has "won" in some way. But you are certainly not in any way transcendenced ideological subjection. You have obviously "bought" the ideology of anti-propaganda just as blindly as some might buy the advertising campaign of Microsoft and think it makes you superior. Ultimately we are subjects to ideological domination of one form or another. Some of us are just more conscious of it than others. ;)

I think Microsoft must have hired McDonald's former marketting director to head up their xBox360 campaign.... Ghetto ads are interesting, but not something that makes me want to buy their product at all. When I see a McGriddle's commercial I think, "Gee... why should I buy one of those? I'm not gangsta and I'm not lovin' it."
Don't get me wrong, I'm not racist (as my black friends will confirm), but I think that these ads are just plain silly. Other companies have figured out how to cross-market to all races... Microsoft doesn't need to advertise like McDonalds-- Microsoft isn't ghetto.
Oh and those people have some sweet skills. Napolean Dynamite could compete with that though. ;)

Ghetto ads are interesting, but not something that makes me want to buy their product at all. When I see a McGriddle's commercial I think, "Gee... why should I buy one of those? I'm not gangsta and I'm not lovin' it."Well, I'm kind of confused. I know that McDonald's still has those "I'm Lovin' it" commercials, so the former marketing director would have nothing to do with those, right? In that case, it might work, but those "I'm Lovin' it" ads are, IMO, some of the worst ads ever made. Now, I'm assuming that others disagree with me because they've been running for years, but what they did stop were the horrible "free style" rapping versions that were absolutely awful.
In the case of this Xbox commercial, it's always refreshing to see something different. It was well shot, well choreographed and directed. At first, it looks like it's going to be an "urban" commercial of some sort, but then you have all these other groups jumping in, so you know somethings up. But I wonder whether the X360 logo at the end is enough for someone who's just sitting on the couch watching the TV. For us here in the EvAv forums, we're obviously going to remember this because we're making such a big deal about it, but will Joe CasualGamer remember? Will Billy's mom and dad remember? Maybe, maybe not, but I think that with a commercial, especially a commercial before a really big launch like this, you don't want any maybes.

...who can't even type the word Microsoft...
...who can't stand Microsoft being referred to as ***?
I always find it amusing when people take issue with calling *** that (sometimes immediately invoking the spot-the-fanboy game, not that I'm saying you are one), even though I primarily use it as shorthand, nothing more. But a small, waning part of that is not forgetting their prior transgressions and grief inflicted with their OS and tactics (US justice dept, european commission, now south korea, etc ad nauseum), but in deference to the topic I really don't want to derail the thread so I'll just say this. I'll not stop referring to Microsoft as *** no matter who or how many take issue with it, fanboy or not. But I tell you what, I'm flexible. I'll refer to Sony as $ony if it makes your tummy feel all warm and fuzzy inside, makes no difference to me. :)

I don't buy you using '***' as shorthand - why not use the letter S instead? It is, after all, easier to reach than $! Oh, it's because you don't like or approve of Microsoft's past transgressions. Which in turn negates your claim that using *** is nothing more than shorthand.
Your argument is weak.

Post to post, it is just shorthand, nothing more. Until someone or a fanboy gets in my face about it, that is. I did clearly mention what a small part of that was about to cover my ass, whether you think it negates things is a weak issue, grammatical nitpicking at best, and entirely meaningless to me, and won't change things.
And your assumptions are grand. ;)

First off, this is great marketing. It's focus is the average american consumer who doesn'r really do anything. It's focus is to make them want to belong to this uber-cool group of jump-ropers (xbox 360) owners. Secondly, There are several white people in that commercial. What are you afraid of that the hip-hop culture is going to completely take over, and on day in the not to far future, we will all kneel reverently before the throne of master overlord

I have my own reservations of labeling the commercial ghetto. No one labeled the Sony commercial where hundreds of people in an urban setting swarmed some building and were just stacking themselves on top of one another.
Now, I actually enjoyed the commercial. You didn't know what it was for (if you hadn't seen it on the post) until the end. 'Jumping In' to the 360 seemed like a good idea. I wouldn't be surprised if we were actually a part of test group for the commercial. But whatever. I liked the commercial...it would have been unimaginative to just blast game cutscrenes and in-game to sell the system.
