Joystiq has a nice article (http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000423065970/) up summarizing an interview with Jim Merrick who's the Director of Marketing in Nintendo Europe. It appears that Europe will be getting just as many wifi hotspots as the US or Canada.

For European gamers, Nintendo is planning to set up 25,000 Wi-Fi hotspots all across the continent. According to NOA Rufus on the Nintendo forums, the Nintendo Wi-Fi website (http://www.nintendowifi.com/) will be up and running as of next monday, November 7th, claiming that the site will have “all the info you need.”
Nintendo just keeps slowly giving more and more info about their new online service. I wonder what info will be on the new Wi-Fi webiste...

I like nintendo's ideas of free wifi, I just hate the fact it's at McDonald's... But then again I can't really think of another business entity that would have as big of a reach as McDs, aside from Wal-Mart, and that would suck to play there.

What I still don't understand is, will the DS be able to use any wireless card, or am I going to have to buy another $40 USB N-Wireless card?

As far as I understand it, you can use any wireless card as long as you're not using WPA encryption. WEP is fine.

It can use any wireless router and that router can even have WEP enabled, or many other options. I don't remember offhand all of the options it has available for communicating with routers but I do know it can.

(and WPA, based on screenshots, will probably not be supported at first).

The "USB N-Wireless" as you refered to is, not necessary, you will only need it if you want/need "zero wi-fi configuration", have no wifi router, or refuse to use/downgrade to WEP.

I'm hoping open wi-fi points will not need to be configured, but my cynicism says no Mario Kart in random coffee shops.

Do any of you really think there will be people at these McDonalds locations over the age of 12....seriously? I highly doubt there will be a lot of people taking advantage of this at all, let alone adults. I'll stick with my router at home, thank you. Now just give me Animal Crossing online, damn it.

Hey, there's a Mickey D's within 100 ft. of any given U.S. house. I don't think anyone's gonna need a router.

I agree with you...on Animal Crossing. I may pop in on my lunch break from work to race some people or come to your house and bury trash.
