It's the end of an era!

From the Playstation.Blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/) comes word that Sony will be releasing premium (as in you pay one) themes for the PS3 in the near future.

The last time I posted it was regarding our special E3 section on the PlayStation Store. This time around I wanted to tell you about a new offering that you’ll see tomorrow. In addition to all the free themes you’ve already been getting and will continue to get on the PlayStation Store now, you’ll have the option to upgrade and purchase premium themes to customize the look of your PS3’s XMB.
...
We have created a new “Premium Themes” section under Themes & Wallpapers for you to easily access this content. Also, for each theme, there is preview option that allows you to view images of the theme prior to making your decision.

We plan to offer approximately 6-10 new “Premium Themes” a month. So be sure to check back often to browse the newest in premium theme content.

No.

Seeing as it's super easy to find or make your own background pic I can live without. I bought some 360 ones though, at the start. Can't be assed now.

nope, i try the free ones from time to time, on both the 360/ps3. but always change them back within a minute. the ps3 especially since nothing compares to that default undulating wave.

I remember one of the things you got with a purchased theme that you couldn't do yourself, was a different image for each blade. Right now, I'm sporting the free Castle Crashers theme and its pretty slick. Now, if only sounds would accompany the themes, they'd make pay ones totally worth while.

From what I read pricing was .99 - 1.99.

And a quick addition, if the themes included animated backgrounds, or were something like the original XMB default background with the moving waves, I would consider spending money. But if its all static, then I can live off of the free ones.

Yeah, that was the only reason I bought some of those. I still think it's screwed that you can't preview them on the spot though. I can't be bothered to look it up on another computer.

PSN doesn't do that though, and the free theme's are fine. Don't need more than this.

I bought a few themes on the 360 back when I first got the system but now it's pretty much all free, all the time on both systems.

What I've really liked about the PS3 is that the themes have been free. Some of them aren't that great but the other nice thing is that you can mix and match, so I can put up wallpapers with a different theme's icons or my own photos.

The premium themes would have to be some kind of special to make me want to drop money on them.

my guess, it's not just backgrounds were talking here. as you can see from some of the free themes, it changes icons, sounds, rotating backgrounds, ect...

i'd be happy to pay for them if they're awesome

By the way, it is possible to make your own PS3 themes. I plan on doing this to emulate a Premium XMB theme I may like in the future.
