Releasing sometime between now and next spring, Microsoft will be bringing 5 fairly high profile titles to XBLA: Metal Slug 7, Arkanoid Live, Space Invaders Extreme, R-Type and King of Fighters '98. Xbox 360 Fanboy has the word (http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/10/08/tgs-08-metal-slug-7-arkanoid-space-invaders-r-type-and-kof/):

On the Xbox Live Arcade news fronts, Microsoft just announced that Taito's Space Invaders Extreme and Arkanoid (with 120 stages and online play) will release to the XBLA this Winter. Also announced was old school racer R-Type and that SNK Playmore's The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match will release Spring of 2009 and Metal Slug 7 will be releasing to the Arcade at a time yet to be determined.

I loves me some shmups.

I can get behind Space Invaders and R-Type, maybe even Metal slug if I had any idea when it might appear.

Now to put all of these games to the back of my mind, lest the anticipation of Spring 2009 ruins the absolutely fucking stonking month and a half ahead of us.

Just read that 2009 also brings the sequel to Banjo (Tooie? was it it). Awesome.

I love shoot em ups as well, only they need to look the biz, and games that old don't do it anymore. I'll wait for Otomedius.

It is a remake of R-Type 1 and 2 with new 3D graphics as well as the original 2D art. You can switch on the fly between them.

I might wish to add that I am very excited about R-Type.

Recently bought the VC TG R-type port - an arcade perfect one will do quite nicely for me thankyou - and not feel an unnecessary purchase.

In regards to the above post - by remake - do you mean "arcade perfect port"? I sure hope so.

And by R-Type 1 & 2 - surely you mean the PC Engine 1/2 (which was stages 1-4 & 5-8 respectively) - and not the arcade R-Type 2? That would seem quite the bargain.

Because if the above statements are indeed accurate - I may need to wee a little. In my pants (if I was wearing them).

It was late when I copied their text, maybe they were as tired as I was?

It is a perfect copy of the arcade versions from R-Type 1 and 2 with optional remade 3D graphics.

Is it as good as I remember it or does it not hold up very well?... (wish I had a way to get those 100+ custom levels I made on my Apple II+ over to the console.. I made some REALLY seriously hard levels) Tell me there is an editor included.. right?!?

It most definitely will. I really wish I could give the community a little more info, but the reigns are held pretty tight on this one. Keep the faith.
