City of Villains, the stand-alone expansion for City of Heroes, is now live (http://rpg.boomtown.net/en_uk/articles/art.view.php?id=9671). The servers were opened up for the general public at 2AM Central Time after a weekend reserved for pre-order customers. The servers ran quite smoothly during the weekend after initial lag problems and apart from some server maintenance Sunday.

I want to play CoV right now, but my brain knows that the influx of new players will kill the servers for at least a month.

Mine keeps flipping over to CoH when ever I try to create a new villian...

You know, I was into Target last night and saw this game sitting on the shelf, I was not aware it had been released yet. But thinking about it here, what if Joe Anonymous picked the game up over the weekend only to come home and find out he can't play because he bought it at Target rather then pre-order?

I did not like City of Heroes, I really thought I would; but the recharge time between everything, the empty feeling the city gave me, and just the blah feeling the quests had really turned me off, and quick, I stopped on day two of my fourteen day trial. City of Villains could actually hold my interest a bit more, but only because of the Villain aspect.. if it's anything like CoH, bleh.

So far so good. No real noticable lag, and everything going according to plan. Account updated without issue, and am now playing out in Port Oakes squishin' the Longbow scum under my boot.

/emote grins evily.

I don't think the game was supposed to be available for purchase until servers were open for public (i.e. today). Only pre-orders were supposed to be received before that, I think. Either way.

The ingame information flat out says you wouldn't be able to play until the 31st, but it was released on the 29th here in Tennessee. Go figure.

I wouldn't even worry about that. They have about 200K subscribers and like 10 servers. Even if every user was on concurrently, that would be somewhere around 2K players/server and we had at LEAST 4K concurrently on the beta server.

Even if they sold a lot of units with CoV (something I'm not convinced about because they probably have an equal number of old users leaving due to the enhancement nerfs) they would be okay unless the population doubled AND was all on concurrently.

I do think the starter zones will be crowded and you'll have to deal with zones instancing for a month or so, but that is entirely playable and okay.

Dammit, don't tell me that, I need to get my rogue to at least 35 so I can max out my alchemy and start transmuting.

And according to Statesman, they had no control on when the shops started selling CoV, thus why it was out early.
