Remember how the other week we ran news (http://evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65684) about how Funcom was merging servers? Funcom is now coming out to say that this was something requested from their userbase, so you shouldn't read into it as anything else. 1Up has this info (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170379):

Funcom product director Jørgen Tharaldsen moved to assuage player fears about what the upcoming server merge might mean for Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. The future of the massively multiplayer online game is unclear despite an outstanding debut.

In an interview with Strategy Informer, Tharaldsen said the merge is meant to make it easier for players to find groups and participate in PvP. From the interview:

"I think that people who are playing Conan are actually very happy about the news, and indeed, it's been one of the most requested things from our player base. The essence of any MMO is the social experience, and right now people are spread out a bit too thin across the servers. The merge will hence improve the overall fun-factor and will make it easier to team and fight with and against other players."

What do you all think? I'm guessing it was requested because of the declining userbase, although they don't explicitly say that.

The userbase was declining before I left, and that was a while ago. This comes as no surprise.

The players wouldn't ask for it unless the servers were underpopulated. And the devs certainly wouldn't honor that request unless the servers were underpopulated.

So how is that any different from letting everyone assume the merges happened because the servers were underpopulated?

Okay, so the players asked for the server merge.

The game is still terrible, which is why it is underpopulated. Who initiated the server merge is irrelevant.

Failure of a game is a failure.

You would think they would have taken a page out of EQ2's book. Just because you need a fancy rig to play it doesn't mean the graphics are good.

How do they expect to get a large playerbase when most people can only run the game at medium to low settings? On anything but the highest settings this game looks terrible...

Why release an announcement?

Id just implement the RvR patch while merging servers (but keeping old names as aliases...)

People see extra people, think its the RvR patch.. and everyone is happy..

Ignorance IS bliss!

Announce the server closings, then Ill care, that game was a waste of everything.
