The most recent of Valve's Steam News Updates (http://www.steampowered.com/Steam/Marketing/October28.2005/) has news celebrating the released of the Lost Coast test map and talking about a upccoming Counter-Strike Source content.

We hope everyone is enjoying Lost Coast. We've received a number of e-mails with positive feedback about the commentary system included in Lost Coast, so it's a safe bet that we'll look for ways to include commentary in future products.

We're now going to be looking toward releasing some new Counter-Strike: Source content we've been working on. The next two maps coming will be updated versions of de_nuke and cs_militia, along with a number of new player models for both sides. We'll give everyone a sneak peek at Nuke and some of the new models next week.

Two weeks ago we mentioned (http://www.steampowered.com/Steam/Marketing/October14.2005/) our affinity for all things zombie, along with the note that someone here at Valve had made a short movie on the subject. Zombie Movie has won Best Comedy Horror Short down at Screamfest L.A. (http://www.screamfestla.com/) and we're looking forward to delivering the movie over Steam soon. We think everyone will get a kick out of it.

Man, I am beginning to love Steam, despite its extremely frustrating launch. those two maps were my favorite ones from old CS, really looking forward to them. even they will never be played probably, people just vote dust or dust2 when a new map comes.

Lost Coast didn't impress me that much. The lighting alone is not remotely worth the performance hit.

Really? I barely suffered a performance hit at all, and my computer's not too powerful by any means.

Well I played HL2 at 1600x1200, with everything maxed including AF and AA. Guessing I got around a solid 50+ FPS.

Lost coast I played with everything maxed, 1600x1200, but only 2x FSAA and AA, and I'm guessing I got closer to 20-30 FPS. If it was more than one level I would of tweaked things down in it, but I don't think the HDR by itself was worth it.

Hm. Weird. I know I didn't tweak anything. I'm not 100% positive what my settings were at to begin with though. I guess I doubt I had everything maxed, and I'm sure I didn't play in 1600x1200, but either way.

Meant to say this in the first post, but forgot:

Man, with all these content updates, I'm really falling in love with Steam pretty hard. It's seriously starting to look like Valve is on the cusp of a successful new means of providing continuous content, free and otherwise. I'm very very impressed.

How much will that fucking lame movie cost us? Steam seems to make people think you can charge people for EVERYTHING like that retarded Neil Monkey with his THE SUFFERING SOURCE which won't be free.

I think it will likely be free.

Who said the movie was going to cost us anything?
Just because they are releasing it on Steam doesn't necesarilly mean they are going to charge money.

I was under the assumption the movie was free.

Chances are they'll make people pay.

I really don't understand the 'love' Steam seems to be getting. I went from getting a good few dozen servers under 20 ping (for every map I searched for in CS 1.5) to about 10 servers, total, under one hundred ping now under steam.

I know it isn't me, I ask my friends what their pings were, and what they are now. It's pretty much the same thing. Hell, I even know two people who went on to win rather large CS tournies who won't play anymore almost entirely due to steam.

What does it do that you need? I don't need a terrible interface, a non-working friends list, a favourites list that disappears if steam updates, a mute system that requires me to go through several windows, and only allows me to mute half the people who actually have a mic, and some of the laggiest gameplay since MPlayer. A feat not to be taken lightly.

Doubtful. But you keep those asslips moving.

Eh, no noticeable performance hit for me, at all, 1920x1200, max eyecandy. :-)

You might want to try to be a bit forward looking, perhaps, and consider the fact that hardware is continually getting faster. Might as well start working on the software advances to take advantage of it, yes?

...or maybe you would be deliriously happy playing Berserk for the rest of your life?

If I wanted pc gaming to devolve to software that targeted 3 generations old video cards as their optimal system, I'd just switch entirely to console.

I am running at 800X600 and everything either off or at low setting (except textures, I think its at medium), on top of that I only get 20 fps, so you two need to shut the hell up about system specs.

It probably will be free. Why are you angry?

Right. Sure.

Well, in my case I've never experienced 20 ping and find under 100 to be extremely enjoyable. I'm not sure I get what the problem is. Hell, back when I had dial-up I used to be loving it when my ping was below 500.

Or you need to upgrade? ;)

I am. The power is better used elsewhere, in my opinion. Lost Coast did nothing for me.

And I'm running an FX-53, a 6800 Ultra and 2gb ram. Did you guys do anything but change the resolution before playing? It's a fact Lost Coast is much more system intensive, from Valve themselves. So I tend to think if you are not noticing a difference then you are letting it detect the settings for you. Which will make them different than they were in HL2 or the settings are set so low that your framerate is high enough to where you can't see the difference.

I read the title of the post, "New CS Source Maps," and got all excited that they had been released. :(

I'm pretty sure that if you don't want to pay for a fucking lame movie, you won't have to, kind of like every other movie released.

This young fellow is certainly onto something. Mayhaps he is a Business major?

HDR was certainly a little taxing on the system, but it was worth it. And honestly, it works and only works well with HL2's expensive background.

I dunno...I personally found the HDR really impressive. I thought it made the HL2 world really come to life in a new way. It's becoming clear that improved lighting is the most important new direction for graphics, and so far I've been much more impressed by Valve's approach than id's.

HDR is nice...when done properly. I really didn't think Valve's implementation of it was very impressive. There's quite a few tech demo's around the net showing off some HDR stuff that are just amazing....Lost Coast was underwhelming for me.

Hey, Bapenguin, if you come across any of those demos will you link us? I'd like to take a look. Thanks.

dude, part of the reason people buy extremely high end equipment is too tell everyone else how much their computer pwns.

At any given time in CS:S, i usually get at least 50 servers with under 15 ping, and usually about 100 more with pings under 50. Your internet connection could suck, or perhaps you have filters on and you don't know it. This goes for your friends as well. It could be your location. Do you live in timbuktu perhaps? Or perhaps North Dakota? (same thing)

I like the splinter cell: chaos theory approach the best myself. Its somewhere in between HL2, and Doom 3.

You don't understand what Steam is or does. Your ping to servers is reliant on your internet connection and the servers running in our local area. Steam is a front end and distribution system. When you're using it to browse servers it's doing the exact same task as any other server browser.... polling servers for information.
