Kish from BCBComics.com (http://www.bcbcomics.com) sends along word that Marvel has revealed their secret "King" project, a new Dark Tower comic book written by world famous horror author Stephen King and illustrated by Jae Lee.

Ending months of speculation, Marvel Comics has confirmed it will join forces with the macabre "master of modern horror," World Fantasy Award-winner Stephen King, for a groundbreaking new comics series that will expand upon one of the author's most popular works, The Dark Tower!

Illustrated by Eisner-award winning artist Jae Lee, the six-issue limited series will mark the first time King has produced original content for a comic book project. The series will expand the saga of King's epic hero, Roland Deschain, whose quest to save the Dark Tower is captured in seven bestselling novels published over the course of 25 years. King's unparalleled storytelling power will inform new stories that delve into the life and times of the young Roland, revealing the trials and conflicts that lead to the burden of destiny he must assume as a man, the last Gunslinger from a world that has moved on. The comics will work in conjunction with the novels, further supplementing and defining the saga's mythology under the direction of the acclaimed author himself.

MARVEL ANNOUNCES STEPHEN KING TO WRITE DARK TOWER COMICS SERIES

"As a lifelong fan of Marvel comic books, and as an adult reader who's seen comics 'come of age' and take their rightful place in the world of fantasy and science fiction, I'm excited to be a part of Roland's new incarnation," said King. "I love Jae Lee's work, and I think this is going to be a dynamite partnership. Frankly, I can't wait."

"Stephen King is a true literary master. We are thrilled beyond words to have him join Marvel on this exciting project. The millions of Dark Tower fans are in for a real treat, and I'm sure many more will soon be hooked on this epic series through this historic comic project," said Marvel Entertainment Editor-In-Chief and Chief Creative Officer, Publishing Joe Quesada.

"The level of excitement and talent that Stephen King brings to the world of comic books is electrifying. We're proud and honored to be a part of what promises to be an industry-defining event," said Publisher and Chief Operating Officer of Marvel Entertainment, Publishing Dan Buckley.

"What a coup for the House of Ideas, and for the industry in general!" said Diamond President and CEO Steve Geppi, commenting on the announcement. "This is certain to expose Stephen King's legion of fans to the comic book and graphic novel format, and I for one can't wait to read the fruits of his and Jae Lee's labor."

Scheduled for publication in April 2006, Marvel's Dark Tower comic should benefit from Pocket Books' release of the final three books in the epic novel series. A hardcover collection of the series will follow in late 2006. Fans of King will not want to miss this landmark series, which will enrich their understanding and appreciation of the modern classic, The Dark Tower!

Hrm, and here I am still waiting on the last 3 books to go softcover (paperback/small softcover, not the big ones that are out already).

Now the question is.... consume the graphic novels immediately upon release, or maintain civility until i rabidly obtain the hardcover?

I think we'll do some sort of EA deal like on the Penny Arcade book when Marvel gives us more details.

By the Gods, I am sooooo drooling over this. It's going to be awesome! I always knew there was some untold story waiting to be written by King about Roland's past. This is going to be awesome!

Looks beautiful. This art looks as good or better than Michael Whelan's original Gunslinger illustrations (those and the ones from Drawing of the Three were always my favorite).

On another site I saw speculation on whether Roland would recover the horn this time around, to bring closure to the wheel of his Ka. Can't wait to find out!

So, do you want this book because of his bad layouts or his inability to draw characters that look different? :D

Seriously, though. It seems like Jae Lee is really hit or miss. I really liked some of the Captain America stuff he did a couple of years ago, but did you see his GI Joe/Transformers World War II crossover? You couldn't tell what was happening in any given panel, let alone who was in it!

If anyone has read the manga "Preist", you may agree with me that this comic would be much cooler if done in that style. Its kind of a drawn version of the spagetti westerns and also black and white besides the covers. The covers are also noteworthy as they have to be the coolest comic covers I have ever seen. Very cool comic if you are looking for something to read.

Actually, Preist is a Korean comic and also reads in traditional English left to right. I honestly cannot remember the name of Korean comics though, and besides its put out by Tokyo Pop.

Horn? Damnit, put some spolier warnings in there before you post about what did or didn't happen.

What a compelling argument! Sorry, but if you haven't read the Dark Tower series you've missed some of his best work. I agree he's done a lot of hack horror, but the Dark Tower is very different from all of that.

TrackZero- sorry, I felt that spoiler was obscure enough to not really tell you anything about the story. Where are you in the series right now?

Sorry, but you're wrong.

I consider The Talisman and Black House to both be incredible works of fantasy. Not everything that he writes is shock horror. In fact, he really doesn't write much shock horror at all - people have just pigeonholed him.

I really do need to read the Dark Tower books - they are referenced in Black House multiple times. Reading the Dark Tower series and then rereading the Talisman and Black House would probably enlighten me quite a bit on various things that I am sure I missed.

Did anyone even read Stephen King's first comic book writings? Meaning Batman in the 80's? I'm curious to know how that turned out.

What about the rumored Castlevania animated series written by Warren Ellis.

It makes my pee-pee soft and hard.

Never heard of this. I'd be interested in checking it out, I guess, if it's true.

Oh shit, yeah. I'm counting on this one to be true.

He was the writer before Frank Miller's Batman Year One run if that helps.

Uh... I was under the impression that Batman: Year One was a miniseries seperate from the actual series. Huh.

Nope, around Batman i think at the early 400 mark of the series. It was within the comic books.

Oh shit, yeah. I'm counting on this one to be true.
Sample dialogue:
"You sucking my fucking blood ain't fucking bloody fucking likely, you pissant fluttermouse."

"Killing vamps is easy, innit? Kick 'em in the nuts, hit 'em with the spike. Then you hack off the head, and it's a bitch getting the blood out your clothes, but you gotta do the bugger up right. I like ta finish by shitting down their neck, but that's more of an optional flourish."

Personally, I think Ellis should write everything, but that'd be a lot of amphetemines.

Another fun fact. In the 80's Stephen King used to write those little back stories for G.I.Joe and Cobra on the back of the action figure boxes.

He'd fucking do it. Look at how much he's doing now. It may not be everything, but it's a good portion, and he's spread out all over the fucking place. Seriously, he has a book for DC, a couple for Marvel, one for Wildstorm (also DC, but whatevs), one for Image, one for Top Shelf coming soon, and one for Avatar in the works.

Hell.

God, it's too bad that series went to hell on like book 4 or 5, at some point i said screw this and started reading Peter Straub. I considered King's slaughtering of his own best and greatest work the final straw for him. I have never looked back.

I found the assorted mythos from the black tower way more interesting. It, Hearts in atlantis, the Talisman, Black House, it came from a buick 45, yadda yadda. I was really disappointed with the Dark Tower series after book 4, and quit entirely after 5, the universe was just falling apart. Seriously, everyone here should just read Peter Straub, he is the reason The Talisman and Black House are so nice. I suggest KOKO, or Shadowland. He makes some really cool connections about religion and magic in Shadowland that shocked and enthralled me.
